Natusan stopping selling cat litter - any suggestions for replacements?

Sparticle · 11/03/2024 16:21

I've been using Natusan wood litter for a long time but recently they have been out of stock for ages. I got an email today saying they were no longer selling in the UK and I'm gutted. It was lovely sustainable, long-lasting litter, there was no smell from the litter tray and my cat was happy with it too.

Because I needed some, I ordered this Cat's Best Wood Fibre Cat Litter, 4.3kg : Amazon.co.uk: Grocery from Amazon and it came today but it's almost like proper chunks of wood, not the smaller, lighter sort-of flakes of Natusan.

Obviously I will give it a go and gradually mix it in with the last half a bag of Natusan I have but in case it doesn't work, can anyone else suggest any nice wood litter please?

Thanks in advance Thanks

No! I didn’t see the email til you posted this! Argh that’s annoying!

They are suggesting Catsan as a replacement. Do you know anything about that brand?

DeZerbisWinnerWinnerPastaDinner · 11/03/2024 16:31

Mine like Catolet litter. It's made from paper, is lightweight and absorbent.

Sparticle · 11/03/2024 16:59

@Trisolaris - I have no idea what it's like but the Catsan website doesn't say that the wood litter is clumping, which I like in the Natusan, and the 'natural' litter is the wheat stuff which my cat hated when I tried the Natusan version. :(

@DeZerbisWinnerWinnerPastaDinner - thanks very much, I'll look it up.

I’ve used Catsan wood comfort for all of mine with no problems but no, it’s not clumping.

I've used narusan in the past but currently use katkin scoop. It isn't wood, some sort of processed pea starch food byproduct I think. It is clumping and my very old cat got used to it quickly. https://www.katkin.com/scoop-litter

That looks really good, I'll see how my cat gets on with the one I posted above and might try this one out.

Greenwood's is excellent.

tortietimestwo · 11/03/2024 22:40

I use Cats Best Original and it's a really good clumping litter. Is that the one you got? It's basically wood flakes but works great and keeps odours down, lasts ages as well before you have to do a full litter change.

Watching this post as I’ve also just been looking for alternative since getting the email yesterday. Some great suggestions here. Will have a look through, thanks for the thread

Sparticle · 12/03/2024 16:00

@tortietimestwo yes that's the one I got I think. Thanks for the review :)

@Tippaws thank you too for bringing your product to our attention (although I don't know if MN allows advertising posts??!). It does look good. Not sure you being the ex-CEO of Natusan though qualifies you as being objective as you say in that page "Note: this is based on personal experience and extensive research into the cat litter industry over many years and so we feel we are well placed to write am [sic] objective Natusan cat litter review." 😁

Well I'm not going to report your post as I think you've done it very openly and after all, I was asking for alternatives!

I do like the look of your cat litter, once my cat has tested out the Cat's Best litter I bought, I'll definitely consider trying yours.

With the news about vet prices this morning, it is interesting to read this in the Guardian's morning new update email:

"Mars, the American conglomerate famous for the chocolate bar, owns 59 primary care practices and 17 referral vet hospitals in the UK via its Linnaeus subsidiary. Mars owns a further 2,500 vet clinics or hospitals around the world, and more than 40 pet food brands including Pedigree, Whiskas, Cesar, Sheba and Royal Canin. It also owns “cat crack” treats Dreamies and cat litter brand Catsan."

Very interesting... That does put me off Catsan a bit.

Oh very interesting, thanks for sharing. I actually only noticed yesterday when looking at my last remaining Natusan bag that they are owned by Mars as well! So no wonder they’re recommending Catsan.

I've ordered the Tippaws after learning about it in here, I’ll report back with how I get on with it!

I'm really sorry but it's just not :( I wanted to love it but it doesn't clump as well as natusan and it tracks everywhere and it doesn't last half as long. I was actually quite disappointed because I thought it was going to be a better alternative.

SabrinaThwaite · 13/03/2024 12:57

I have just switched from a clay based clumping to the Pets at Home wood granules clumping. So far, so good - clumps well and seems to do well enough on odours, and it’s low dust. The downside is that I can see it’s going to get tracked outside the tray a bit - I have a covered tray and a big mat that should catch the worst of it.

It’s fine grained too. I think my cat might have become allergic to the dust in clay based litter, so I’m hoping that this stops the sneezing fits.

PurringTabbyCat · 19/03/2024 16:10

Any more suggestions? I wasn’t 100% happy with Natusan because I found it tracked everywhere. My elderly cat doesn’t retract her claws properly I think so it ends up stuck. She only likes that kind of fine grained litter though. I’m hoping by some miracle a non tracking, clumping, soft on her feet and not clay based cat litter exists!

@Speckledy does the Katkin clump nicely? I saw some complaints that it set into glue at the bottom of the tray. I liked Natusan because the clumps were so easy to remove and my fusspot also likes a very clean tray.

Soubriquet · 19/03/2024 16:15

We get on really well with cats best. Lasts a month, clumps nicely, easy to remove. Only down side is, it does track a little

PurringTabbyCat · 19/03/2024 16:22

I used Cat’s Best before Natusan and I wasn’t a huge fan. I found it stuck to the litter tray and was very gluey.

Canthave2manycats · 19/03/2024 18:57

I use Asda, Tesco or Sainsburys tbh and find them ok.

FlyingFlamingo · 19/03/2024 19:14

Try Benek from Zooplus - we like the ‘ultra’ one which has smaller grains than the original. The cut grass one actually smells nice and isn’t overpowering. It clumps really well and lasts ages.
