How much does your BSH weigh?

My nine year old boy weighs 6.9kg and I got a huge bollocking at the vet this morning. I'm told he has to switch to Royal Canin diet food and join the vet's monthly fat club. She wants him at 5kg.

We banned Dreamies a few years ago but his weight has continued to rise. DP's furious he has to switch to diet food and insists he's a typical BSH.

My black and white post office cat was 4-5kg. Tabby got up to 6.6kg and we had to put him on a diet.

My current b&w shorthair cats are dinky and 3-4kg but their mum was half Siamese and they are not meant to be big cats. My tabby's paws were twice their size.

Our girl (age 2) has just hit 6kg. Her mum was 6.5kg and her dad just over 8kg - she was never going to be little!
Our vet commented that she was a beautiful example of the breed and her girl was heading towards 8kg! She said the issue vets have is they compare to adult cat of that age, not breed!
Maybe time to consider finding a vet with breed knowledge.

Yes I think I’ll get a second opinion, that’s a good shout, before I stick him on his diet (and he yowls morning noon and night for food).

Mine was 6.5kg when we got told off and sent to the fat cat clinic…

She then moved in with my in laws (long story) and is much bigger. I can see it affecting her - she’s really slow and inactive. Poor puss.

That’s well sad.Is there anyway you can intervene as it’s affecting her.

thaegumathteth · 01/03/2024 13:45

Both of mine (brothers) are 3.8kg

@problembottom he isn’t fat and doesn’t need to lose weight. You need a vet with a BSH like I do.

incidentally I think you may have my cat

He’s about 6.5kg. He’s a very long boy and quite tall too. I found this graphic very helpful, as what is a good weight is varies according to things like height/length etc.

Edit:Pic has gone a bit funny around the edges so here is a link to find the original chart https://scrumbles.co.uk/blogs/news/cat-weight-chart-helping-your-cat-lose-weight

@Naughtiest she's lush. And looking great at her age!

I dont have a bsh, I opened this thread because I confused it with domestic short hair, I.e a mog. My rescue mog is 4.8kg, a little bit fat but also a legitmately biggish cat for a female. She's been heavier in the past. I don't think she got the memo that cats can be free fed and will eat the right amount, she'd be obese in a heartbeat if I allowed it.

IrisBearded · 03/03/2024 09:06

@problembottom he is absolutely gorgeous. His face doesn't look overweight but we need to see the rest of him!

I see a lot of cats at work (not a vet) and that weight is definitely on the larger size!

I have a female bsh and she was overweight at one point but is ok now at 4.8kg, I give her 2 sachets a day and occasional biscuits, she used to graze all day on biscuits.

She also yowls for food constantly and I have to question myself if I've actually fed her! She puts on a very convincing "I'm starving" performance.

@problembottom sorry I've just seen his full picture! Wow he's handsome, he looks like he's naturally a large build, like the leader of the pride 😺!

BSH is my favourite. Our BSH rescue was a bit of a chunk. I think they are supposed to be bigger.

PlumpHobbit · 18/03/2024 21:27

6.2kg, he's had tummy trouble until we got him on a prescription diet. His dad, albeit not neutered, was HUGE

My ragdoll is 6kg, she was 5.9 at her last vaccination and they want her lighter, down to 5 which I think is too small for her breed somehow she's managed to put on since her appointment!

my mum's ragdoll goes to what we call fat club at the vets, for monthly weigh ins, they originally wanted her down to 5kg but my mum discussed with them as she felt it too light for the breed, so they're set at 5.5kg

I think some of them are used to the smaller breeds, where 6 would probably be far too hefty! I'd use the condition scoring chart as a guide, BSH is fine according to that, Ragdoll, hmmm could use a bit of a diet!

Gorgeous cats!

At his peak my BSH was 6kg and he has become slightly arthritic with age which I worry his weight didn’t help with. It didn’t help that he only liked sleeping, eating and curling up on laps. I think it comes down to the frame of each cat as much as their breed.
