High meat wet food, what is the output like with your cat?

If you feed quality wet food (and your cat uses a litter tray) do you find the resulting output is a lot smaller and firmer, any constipation?

As opposed to the logs that are produced with the stuff that is full of maize, sugar, carageenan and various fillers that pass through quickly?

I don't mean a smallish change, I mean really tiny turds that hide in the litter.

I know good food is denser and takes longer to process and to expect a smaller output, just interested in other experiences and if you have a rounder cat with high meat or a cat shaped one. (Mine is rotund and football shaped).

I did ask about high meat content wet food BTW, not low meat or dry, and am giving my reasons for not using the ones I wasn't asking for opinions on.

You can ask about your preferred brands without passing judgement on others, though.

My girl eats HiLife wet food & I add salmon oil as it's masking crushed up tablets.
She mostly goes outside but when she goes in the litter tray it's pretty stinky. Firm but stinky...
The bit I really love about her is if she does use the litter tray, she comes & tells me so I can clean it out straightaway.
If I'm out & she uses the trays then she waits on the stairs for my return then marches me through the house to the tray to show me!

There can be outbreaks of disease in any food on the market, though - it's certainly not something that's unique to dry cat biscuits.

Your post may be about high quality wet but your tone is quite judgemental of anyone who dares feed anything different.

It's difficult to have a tone on a keyboard...

I tend to reply to comments even when they don't relate to my questions and I give my reasons because if someone takes the trouble to reply I think they should be acknowledged.

Regarding the outbreaks of melamine poisoning and grain storage, I am not going into it, but there have been plenty of food recalls since 2005 when I first became aware.

Have a good weekend.

Anyway, back on topic - I think different cats suit different diets and there's no "one size fits all". Cat A might do amazingly on 80% meat but Cat B might find it too rich and struggle.

I had one like that, she would come in from the garden, use the tray and shout for me to clean it.

She was difficult to feed, and liked Gourmet, I fed her whatever she would lick the gravy off. After many vet visits, and tests, she was finally diagnosed with cancer.

The OP seemed to be asking about the correlation between food and poo, I posted a comparison based on my last and latest cats. Then was bombarded with a dry food is evil message. Not cool.

I'm with you @Scampuss - it's not right to make judgemental comments about what other people choose to feed their animals when they never asked for your advice or opinion.

Yes, a question about high meat food and poo.

Not dry food, hence the reasons for not wanting to feed dry.

Nobody's saying you can't have your reasons, but it's not very kind to leap on people's posts and criticise what they're feeding their animals.

@Scampuss didn't ask for your opinion on dry food and how evil you think it is. She just told you that she fed X and the outcome was Y. If that's not relevant to your question then you can ignore it or just say thank you.

My girl eats Purrform raw pouches and has small, crumbly, non stinky poos. She doesn’t do well on regular cat foods, even the high quality ones.

Moier · 03/02/2024 11:21

Mine only eats dry complete.. with the occasional chicken or fish l cook l him. So no difference.

AnnaMagnani · 03/02/2024 11:23

Animonda Carny - OMG the stench of the poo was horrific

Canagan - not noticeably less but the pong disappears very quickly. And has solved one cat's chronic constipation

Both cats still eat kibble, one more than the other, so not a totally wet food diet. However they also eat a lot less on Canagan, just 1 1/2 pouches a day.

The worst bit of Canagan is they both love the herring flavour and gosh, does their breath smell of herring afterwards.

Iamnocook · 03/02/2024 11:39

Both mine had foul smelling clear the house poos with urgency diarrhoea on high meat WF.

All over the edge of the litter tray onto the floor.
James Wellbeloved dry grain free here
One is 14 and one 16
Teeth are pristine, they look like much younger cats, shiny fur and very active.
My vet comments every time

AnnaMagnani · 03/02/2024 11:48

Honestly can't say anything we have fed them has made a difference to their coats.

One of them is an exceptionally silky cat. It gets comments from anyone who meets her 'oh she's so silky!'

But honestly she's just been like it since a kitten. And she is a dustbin in cat form, she doesn't care what she eats.

I explained how this was not my experience.

This is Mumsnet, posters won't always agree with you. And if you post inflammatory nonsense there's a greater chance of disagreement.

This is like the BF vs FF but for cats 😂

I've tried nearly every food on the planet and dry works for mine.
They are happy and healthy.
Let's face it in the wild they would eat any rodent they could find, forage from bins etc

My vet said dry is far superior as wet is like processed food.
They eat far too much too quickly.
Dry means they have to chew

Haha, I wish my cats would chew their dry food - I swear they swallow it whole sometimes Grin

adriftinadenofvipers · 03/02/2024 12:32

Sometimes think mine inhale it 😁It goes so fast!

lifeispainauchocolat · 03/02/2024 12:36

I once had an orange cat that would eat his dry food so quickly he would vomit it whole (like a big long lump of undigested biscuits) - and if I didn't get to it in time, he would eat them again 😂

Paw2024 · 03/02/2024 12:38

Mine is fed wet and dry

I'm well aware of dry and UTIs in male cats, meat content, feeding raw etc
However he will not eat raw, or any decent wet food. He won't even eat ham or cooked chicken. Occasionally he will eat the odd piece of raw chicken but he would rather starve himself that eat decent wet food
My compromise is I feed him a high meat content dry food and he gets his preferred shite wet food with it Grin

Paw2024 · 03/02/2024 12:38

Oh and his poos are fine. I mean they're not the best smelling but they don't gas the house out

Neilsfavouritechilli · 03/02/2024 12:44

Our two are on the same mix of wet and dry (both half decent quality and available in pets at home). Boy cat does the foulest smelling poos known to man, girl cat - you don't know she's gone until you check the litter tray. The pp who talked about microbiome has it I think.

GetUpStandUp4 · 03/02/2024 12:47

High meat wet usually gives the smelliest poos for our cats. we vary their diet though - usually what's on offer. we always supplement with James welbeloved grain free biscuits though and occasionally some fish or raw chicken wings. the bones are good source of calcium for them, just make sure they are raw not cooked bones.

a couple of people here have mentioned giving their cats fish and meat instead of cans/biscuits. I'm sure you're aware of this but just in case, cats need added taurine in their diet so it's important to add minerals to their food if making your own. you can get a powder that you add a bit of water to and pour over raw food.

Rhino94 · 03/02/2024 21:53

Raw all the way for ours, wouldn’t feed anything else it’s what they are made to eat. Tiny non smelling poos that I don’t even realise they had done until I find them in the litter tray and they are in excellent condition, weight, coats ect.
