Cat's breathing odd

I will ring vets tomorrow but am hoping someone can enlighten me. He's breathing quite fast but he's not in distress or any pain from what I can see. Eating normally and in and out like a fiddlers elbow.
I took a little video but not sure if I can post videos or just pics.

Can you count breaths per minute? Also is there any open mouth breathing?

MollsDolls · 21/11/2023 22:18

54 in 60 seconds. He's asleep beside me and no open mouth breathing at the mo any way. Haven't noticed any of that.

That is really high, can you get an out of hours vet? Failing that I would ask for an emergency appointment as soon as the vet opens

SingingSands · 21/11/2023 22:23

I've experienced this with one our cats, about 20 years ago and it wasn't a good outcome. No pain, purring and eating, but it was heart failure 😞

MollsDolls · 21/11/2023 22:25

No emergency vet where I am. Will ring first thing tomorrow

That's what Google is saying 🥺

Its highly likely fluid on the lungs which can be caused by lots of things but is usually heart issues, if caught early it can be managed by drugs though, the vets can in some circumstances drain it too to help

Switchasaurous · 21/11/2023 22:27

In that case, I'd travel to the nearest emergency vet...

Or is there a 25/7 phone consultation you can have through your insurance? Many insurers have a helpline for this sort of thing.

TheCatWithGreenEyes · 21/11/2023 22:30

Sorry but it sounds like it could be heart failure.
Been there 7 years ago and it wasn't a happy ending x

Wildflower86 · 21/11/2023 22:39

Please go to an emergency vet right away

margotrose · 21/11/2023 22:45

Please go to the vet. Tonight.

Our girl had this in May and didn't make it through the night. I'm sorry 😞

MollsDolls · 21/11/2023 23:06

Spoke with on call vet with our practice. Never knew there was one til I googled. She said she'll see him tonight if really need be but if we can wait til the morning then fast him and they'll do some imaging. She said the fact he was sleeping and content She's happy enough to leave him but if he gets worse to bring him in. Little buggar's gone out now and I prob won't see him til the morn.

How's your boy today?

Igmum · 23/11/2023 08:14

How is he? Sending love and a handhold

MollsDolls · 24/11/2023 18:15

So sorry ladies. Just been a mental couple of days. Took Lando just vets. He's got fluid on the lungs which in turn is hopefully what's causing his breathlessness. He's got no crackle but a slight wheeze. Bloods back clear. So he's been given a steroid, antibiotics and a diuretic and they'll see him Mon if no apparent change or Wed if there is a change as they took an image of his heart but its not clear because of fluid on lungs. She's hoping it's just an infection in his lungs and nothing else so please keep all crossed.

Had to go back to emergency vet tonight. He had a fit. Lost all use of his legs. Took him in and basically if he makes a it through the night without having another fit we'll be lucky. He's been quite agitated since we came home . He's literally settled under one of the dining chairs in the last five or so mins. I'm not sure how we'll fair through the night. 😭😭😭

Oh no, just read this whole thread and I'm really sorry. It's horrific how quickly our lovely cats can go from normal to really poorly. How are things, OP? Lots of hugs.

MollsDolls · 25/11/2023 01:16

Things are hairy at the mo. He lost the use of legs for a wee while and is getting agitated at that. He's resting a lot. Having a drink at the mo and seems to use of his legs again for now. Gonna be a long night I fear. Thanks for asking.

margotrose · 25/11/2023 08:07

How is he this morning OP? I'm so sorry he's not well.

MollsDolls · 25/11/2023 08:28

Well wr made it thru the night. He's out now. He refused to use litter tray and held on all night. He's purring goodo this morn and eaten a little. I'm just afraid his legs will go when out but he's like a caged tiger when he's kept in against his will

OP posts:
Igmum · 25/11/2023 08:41

Good lad ❤️ that purring. Good luck

mummymayhem18 · 25/11/2023 09:58

Aww hope your poor kitty improves. It's scary when they are ill.
