Any tips or anything I need to know? 5/6 month old male kitten. I feel so guilty already!

Don't feel guilty at all. I felt guilty when I dropped mine off to be chipped and spayed and they ended up phoning me to come and get her early as she had recovered so well! They said to try and get her to take it easy but she was having none of it and was back to jumping up to her usual specks the same day! Stitches healed fine, and she didn't seem upset with me at all or anything. I think for Tom cats it's an even simpler procedure. He will be fine :)

hartof · 08/11/2023 21:42

Don't feel bad. Both male cats came home acting like their usual crackhead selves follow theirs. It's much easier on boy cats than girls

platinumplus · 08/11/2023 21:53

Thanks both. Yes he's getting chipped too.

Do they need any pain relief or anything afterwards?

Wavescrashingonthebeach · 08/11/2023 21:54

Mine didn't even have the cone of shame. I got her home and out the carrier and she was literally right as rain pretty much instantly. I was very relieved!

hartof · 08/11/2023 22:07

No nothing, I think they give them some. Before they come home

margotrose · 08/11/2023 22:34

Mine was neutered two weeks ago - got him home and he immediately jumped on his older bothers' head and then proceeded to climb up the curtains Hmm

maximist · 08/11/2023 23:03

One of mine went nuts when I got him home, the vets told me to keep him in overnight but he was bouncing off the walls trying to get out, so eventually I let him out and he ran round like a lunatic for a while then came in and went to sleep. My other boy didn't seem to notice that anything had happened....

TroysMammy · 09/11/2023 06:21

They aren't sleepy and quiet when you get them home. It's a myth the vet and the cat have cooked up to bring out the guilt so you get in fresh chicken and fish to aid recovery. It's the total opposite, one word sums it up nutters.

cuckyplunt · 09/11/2023 06:27

If you have the vests, check for chafing a at the arm holes. Our kitten was rubbed raw before we noticed.

There's absolutely no need to put a kitten in a vest post-neuter.

They're absolutely fine to just go home as they are.

So it's all done 👍
They've given him a cone and they've said he MUST wear it at all times that he's not being watched and definitely at night.
I put it on him when he got home and he was going mad trying to get it off, so I took it off him as I felt it would be doing more harm than good.
He has tried to lick that area a good few times though. Now I'm stuck either having eyes in back of my head or force him to wear the and risk him injuring himself flailing about. Aargh!

He really doesn't need to wear a cone - none of my kittens have come home with cones. IMO it doesn't matter if he licks the area - stitches for a male neuter are generally internal and tiny. I wouldn't worry.

She said there are no actual stitches - the skin just closes back together.
I get what you're saying but she was adamant that he needed to have it on at all times that we're not there 🤷‍♀️

I had my kitten neutered two weeks ago and he didn't come home with anything - nor did they suggest it.

Honestly, he will be just fine without a cone on. None of my animals have ever worn cones after spays or neuters and we've never had a single problem.

Ok that's really good to know. Our vets obviously are being super cautious!
Have your kittens licked the area or do they just not bother? I'm just concerned as he has been trying to groom that area a lot when the cone is off.

OP posts:
margotrose · 09/11/2023 19:16

We've had three boys neutered and two did do some licking but the third wasn't remotely interested. Grooming/licking is (I believe) more of an issue if they have stitches as they can rip them out accidentally.

TheBalletCats · 09/11/2023 21:41

The PDSA say Boy Cats (including kittens) only need to wear a cone/bodysuit if they’re licking a lot. So unless he cuts it out, you’ll need to put the cone/alternative protection method [back] on.

Cat not car!

platinumplus · 09/11/2023 21:47

Thanks all.
It's back on for the time being as every time we turned round he was going for that area.

They said at the vet he might be more sleepy than usual - well the opposite is true - he's not slept since we got back from the vets at 2.30pm. He's barely even sat still - been up and down the stairs, running about, in the litter tray, jumping up on the counters etc.....
Fingers crossed he sleeps tonight!

Only two of my boy cats needed cones the others weren't bothered at all

Try a doughnut instead my cat hurt his claw and freaked out with the cone but he was fine with a doughnut I will see if I can find a picture

Theunamedcat · 09/11/2023 21:59

Doughnut Boy!

He liked it really he used it like a pillow a weapon against his brothers the only downside was I had to remove it for him to poo in his favourite litter tray which meant he had to wait until I noticed he was sitting there

Neutering Tomorrow...
Saffrom · 09/11/2023 22:01

The vet said my cat had to wear a cone after neutering but he took it off. I put it back on, he used a lever to take it off. He was very good at escaping things like that.

Anyway, despite me finding the cone lying around the house every few minutes he seemed to do fine.
