Pet insurance for cats

Does anyone have an insurer they would recommend?

We got 4 weeks free cover for our two kittens with petplan but they want almost £400 per annum for "essential" cover only

We're with Tesco. 2 cats, £20/mth total. Very pleased so far with service.

baggienat · 06/11/2023 16:37

Make sure you read the small print carefully, main things are that it’s cover for life, and that the amount you get is per condition, not per year. Some insurances will only pay out a certain amount for certain conditions as well. The cheapest policies aren’t necessarily the best.
Petplan arent the cheapest but are very good and generally pay out without any trouble, and they do cover for life.

Make sure you get a decent amount of cover per illness. We had £1000 per illness and thought that would be fine, it was not. Our cat recently swallowed ribbon and it cost £1600 in vet bills. Read all the small print, most insurances wont cover dental either so just be aware of that.

Lonecatwithkitten · 06/11/2023 20:01

Many Pets £30 per month for 2 kittens lifetime cover up to £15k per kitten per year including dental.
Also have a policy for my standard poodle they paid out £4k no problem for his epilepsy investigations.

Also with ManyPets

Tesco are excellent - we use them for w ours and have never had a single issue with them.

Toddlerteaplease · 07/11/2023 13:34

Tesco. £25k of claims always paid quickly.

OpposableThumbs2 · 07/11/2023 18:02

We had Tesco insurance, definitely got our money's worth from it. Always paid up.

Scampuss · 07/11/2023 18:09

I'm with Animal Friends as they had the cheapest basic accident cover (which was all I wanted) for £6-ish a month. Made my first claim recently and it was all very easy and no problems.

Digimoor · 13/11/2023 12:15

Thanks, I will try some price comparision sites and tesco
I think accident coverage is my main concern

Abscesses caused by bites from other cats are where most of my claims came from. Three separate occasions and one costing more than £2k.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 13/11/2023 12:52

Tescos same for current and previous cats. They always settled.

margotrose · 13/11/2023 12:55

Tesco are great and cover injury and illness for not a huge amount. We decided to increase our excess to bring down our monthly costs and we cover most minor visits ourselves.

Our oldest cat has just been diagnosed with arthritis and so far they've paid out for an emergency appointment, a follow up and a month of medication - he's got blood tests coming up and then we'll be starting him on monthly injections which they'll also cover. Just one month of injections will be more than our annual premium per condition so it's well worth it for £20 a month.

CottonPyjamas · 13/11/2023 13:31

We're with Animal Friends, and they paid up, without quibble, for every investigation and treatment over the last year of our cat's life (he was 17). We've gone back to them for our new kitten

Actually 90% of claims are for medical conditions and often long term conditions. So lifetime medical is the most important to look for.

Floralnomad · 14/11/2023 19:52

My son has life cover for his Siamese with Petplan . It’s not cheap but they do pay out very quickly . I have life cover with Direct Line for my dog and they have never been an issue but the payments are much slower .

Digimoor · 21/11/2023 07:08

@Lonecatwithkitten what medical conditions for example?

I'm getting quotes of £500 vs £125 (2 cats) for illness vs accident only

OP posts:
margotrose · 21/11/2023 07:24

Medical conditions can be anything from arthritis (very common in older cats), diabetes, hyperthyroidism, feline cystitis, blockages (male cats), heart disease etc.

My eldest is currently on treatment for arthritis at a cost of almost £200 a month. He's only eight so hardly ancient and could have another decade or more in him.

Digimoor · 21/11/2023 09:57

Thanks

Just to point out what you may already know, insurance takes two weeks to kick in, so needs to be taken out two weeks before your 4 weeks runs out, for continuous cover.

Gingerkittykat · 21/11/2023 11:49

With Animal friends you didn't need the two weeks of cover if you have an existing policy with another company i.e. you could start cover the day after your old policy expired and be covered.

My old cat is with Animal Friends and they paid out with no problem.

I switched my younger cat over to them from PetPlan when PetPlan put the premiums up to a ridiculous amount.

JustKen · 21/11/2023 12:13

All insurance has gone up silly money recently. Shop around and negotiate.

Digimoor · 22/11/2023 14:21

Yes Tesco don't provide cover for the first 5 days of the policy

whocaresmore · 22/11/2023 15:57

Sorry to barge in on your thread OP but those with Tesco how much are you paying for older cats? Ours just gone to £60/month for our 12 yo girl which is a huge jump

margotrose · 22/11/2023 16:17

We pay £19.60 a month for our neutered 8yo male.
