Does anyone have an insurer they would recommend?

We got 4 weeks free cover for our two kittens with petplan but they want almost £400 per annum for "essential" cover only

@Lonecatwithkitten what medical conditions for example?

I'm getting quotes of £500 vs £125 (2 cats) for illness vs accident only

That is because most claims are illness so they are far more likely to have to pay out.
Most common claims:
Hyperthyroidism
Diabetes
Chronic renal failure
Arthritis
Pancreatitis
Would be the top 5 I see, they are every week last saw a cat with a broken leg a year ago.

I use animal friends superior policy it's £18 for one cat it went up this year. I think a lot of insurances have gone up

I’ve always used John Lewis. My vet can go through them direct and I only have to pay the excess, no need to claim anything back etc. Mine is £12 a month for my two current cats (have had many) aged 3 and 4
