Litter 🤦🏼‍♀️

We've had our kittens for 5 weeks now and the litter is driving us all nuts. You can't walk in the utility room and surrounding rooms without getting litter all over your feet. It tracks EVERYWHERE.

It's the Catsan natural clumping one. I prefer clumping as a bag lasts longer than non clumping does and with two kittens they get through it!

Does a litter exist that is clumping, minimal tracking and NOT eye-wateringly expensive?!

Intersand classic. It's a sandy texture.

Thanks, I just looked it up and it has very mixed reviews. People either say it's amazing, or that when it's wet it has the texture of wet clay/cement and gets everywhere. I'm not sure what to think Confused

Cat's Best. And trays with high sides.

BackToRealMe · 27/10/2023 20:35

Top entry trays or putting the litter tray in a box-type thing.

AutumnFroglets · 27/10/2023 20:36

Do you have a mat under the tray to catch it before it gets traipsed everywhere? We used to put a couple sheets of newspaper under ours then every few days tip it back into the tray and we had hardly any litter elsewhere. It's amazing how much drops off their furry toes once out of the box. Try newspaper first and if you see a difference then maybe invest in a large mat.

Toddlerteaplease · 27/10/2023 20:41

You have to put it in a really thick layer or it does stick to the bottom of the tray.

Yes we have a mat. Kittens are 3 months old, I think they'd rip newspaper to shreds and have great fun doing it 🤣

I thought about a top entry box but with them being kittens I didn't want to confuse them too much by giving them something they might not be smart enough to work out (they ARE partially ginger after all...)

Cats best smart pellets - absolutely no tracking whatsoever. A 10kg bag lasts a month here.

tillytoodles1 · 27/10/2023 21:24

My 20 yr old cat kicks Catsan and every thing else ive tried all over the place,, always has. Every time I go into the bathroom I get it all over my feet. I've tried those mats but she can kick it further than them and still get it everywhere. I've never found a solution.

My cat pooed in the shower when I used that.

ScottBakula · 27/10/2023 21:42

I use bio kitty ( umm well my cat does ) I don't like the scented one but unscented is fine.

My cat has a lidded tray which helps a fair bit but it's 100 % scatter proof.

If you can find a cardboard box big enough put the tray in there and cut a kitty size hole in the box.
If that helps a lidded box would be worth the investment.

Well you’re just going to have to wait till the day that your cats get custody of The One Brain Cell That They All Share then introduce the top entry box and see if they can remember.
Not being “ist” here there was a thread not long ago about how lovely but dense ginger cats were.😉

How long do kittens need to be on non clumping litter?
We use Cats Best for our adults , deep tray and a lidded tray. It still tracks so it’s a case of running the vacuum over several times a day.

I'm in a Facebook group called 'All orange cats share 1 brain cell' 🤣 it's brilliant!

Mine have been using clumping for 3 weeks now and they've been fine with it. I googled and found out they can use it from 2-3 months as long as they're confidently using the tray.

I'm almost always armed with the stick hoover every time I go near the kitchen, plus Enid our robovac does two rounds a day. It's not the boys flicking it everywhere, I've watched them. It's just that it sticks to their paws, it comes off when they step onto the mat outside the tray and just gets spread around as they're playing and rolling around like the total asshats that they are.

Ah there’s your answer. He’s holding it between his toes and thumb like a pinch of salt and scattering round.

We went to the Ernest Hemingway house with the famous 6 toed cats. Now I think about it , there were no litter trays…….

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 28/10/2023 00:10

On a practical note there are honeycomb mats that are like a pouch. Solid rubber base and a top layer that is a lattice.
It removes it from the paws and you pour it back into the tray

It is indeed. Chester is a Polydactyl cat, his brother Fynn (the second picture) is not, although he does carry the gene. Their mothers line are all poly, I met the mum, uncle and grandma and they all had thumbs!

Wood based cat litter. We never have any bits anywhere.

I bought a litter tray mat from Zooplus and it catches most of the litter that sticks to their paws stopping it spreading around the house. It was less than £8.

Seven cats here. 3 are kittens still using litter tray.
Get a long handled floor brush and brush the floor pushing towards the litter tray every day before you change it. It saves you stepping on bits on litter on your way over to change it. Dustpan and brush to collect the excess afterwards.

margotrose · 28/10/2023 07:22

We use Greenwoods - I found it online when our previous company was out of stock and IMO it's much, much better.

We pay just over £35 for 60l and it lasts us 2-3 months with two adults and a kitten (all indoors).
