Any cat breeders had a kitten THIS small?

Madwife123 · 18/06/2023 23:24

We have 2 week old Ragdoll kittens. 6 in the litter and 1 of them is TINY. Less than half the size of the others.

At birth he was so small we thought he wouldn’t survive but 2 weeks on he’s going strong, feeding well and seems perfectly healthy, except his size.

We’ve had runts before but never such a vast difference. This kitten looks like it’s from a whole different litter!

Is he likely to always be this small? Could there be an underlying problem causing him to be so small? He seems well so I’m reluctant to take him the vets and risk infection etc. but equally don’t want to be missing doing something that we could do to help him.

These photos show the size difference at birth and also now at 2 weeks old. He is clearly growing but not catching up to the others.

crikey, it's loon central here

people do love to imagine shit and then get angry about it

And I guarantee your rescue isn’t flooded with health tested pedigree kittens! The breeders that you come across are the ones letting their unspayed cat roam the streets and mate with any random male. That’s not the same thing.

You all exploit animals for cash. It’s scummy. It’s no better just because they’re pedigree. You are just as bad.

And yes, we often get the pedigree mum cats in that are no longer useful to breed as well as kittens pedigree kittens with health issues.

I have a Malin update post on another forum where I am posting about his journey if you want me to send you the link?

Probably better to keep it over there as this thread has some right crazies who want to do nothing but argue.

I would like this link too please

You think vets change their clothes in-between every single patient they see? Really??

Even doctors don’t that. Which is why you will find more virus’s and infections in a hospital than anywhere else.

Not in the surgery, no.

But they would for a house call for two week old kittens. At least ours would. They're very good at doing house calls for infectious animals.

HairyKitty · 21/06/2023 21:31

@Madwife123 as way as lone feeding the small kitten I think you should also be supplementing several times a day with kitten milk (from a bottle), could you double check this with your vet?

Mums milk is better for kittens. Feeding him formula will mean he feeds less from mum and miss out on all those essential antibodies and nutrients.

We have a tube feeding kit from the vet and my vet trained me how to tube feed years ago but we haven’t needed it yet as he is currently feeding well and gaining weight so it’s better to let him keep doing that.

Instead we supplement the bigger kittens as the more full they are they more of mums milk left for the little one.

I'm honestly interested to know where people should get their kittens from if breeders are supposedly awful

Keep thinking. You might get there.

I'm honestly interested to know where people should get their kittens from if breeders are supposedly awful, and people who sell kittens online are even worse? When I got my kitten last year, I contacted 12 different cat rescues, none of whom had kittens available or who had very long waiting lists, as well as my local vet and cat sitter.

OP. I think it sounds as though you're doing a great job with your tiny kitty and I hope he thrives and stays healthy.

If ‘rescues’ got their way cats wouldn’t exist anymore as no one is good enough to own one.

I feel much more for the mother of the kittens. Used for breeding so OP can sell cats. But yeah, poor OP being up to monitor feeding ever few hours, must be really hard for her. Ffs. 🙄

Yes poor mum cat. Just look at how stressed she is cuddling up with kittens that are not even hers but she chose to squeeze in the box with the actual mum cat. You can see she clearly hates every minute of it.

Every vet I've ever been with has offered house calls. It's hardly an outrageous suggestion, lol.

It doesn't need to be an emergency either, though you would need to wait until after hours unless you lived very close to the surgery.

I don’t understand the need or point of the lol..immature. I live very rurally & my vet in closest town doesn’t offer house calls as she claims she’d never get any time off if she did, instead I had to contact an emergency vet & pay an exorbitant amount of money for the privilege when my animal collapsed one evening.

You would syringe feed the kitten a top up directly after feeding from mum to increase his intake overall, whilst not reducing his milk from the mother cat

I mean, if you really need it explaining to you, I put "lol" because your response about how vets don't offer house calls amused me. I would have thought that was fairly self-explanatory...

We're very rural too and our vet has always offered house calls for people who need them. In fact, the last time we were at the vets for vaccinations, our vet was delayed because of an emergency house call, and that was just on a normal weekday afternoon. The same applied when I lived in a town of 20k people - house calls in emergencies or if your pet was too terrified to get to the vet safely.

It's a shame your vet doesn't offer them but many do, so it was hardly an outrageous thing to suggest to the OP.

You shouldn’t syringe feed a kitten that isn’t actively suckling. You can cause them to aspirate the milk and cause even more issues. A kitten this small tube feeding is a safer option. But overfeeding causes as many issues as under feeding so that’s only indicated if not gaining weight. I have hand reared orphaned rescue kittens before and was taught to tube feed by my vet.

🤦‍♀️I think that was the point the poster was making if you read what was written. They dump their older unwanted cats that are no longer good for breeding and kittens with health issues.

So if rescues don’t have healthy pedigree kittens and breeders are evil. Where do people go if they want a health tested Ragdoll?

Those who dump their cats are not true breeders. The GCCF would strike them off for one if they were aware. I have every single kitten I’ve ever bred dual registered on the microchip so new owner details and my details. I will take them back at any time if needed. I also paediatric neuter kittens sold as pets to ensure their offspring never ends up in the wrong hands also.

Why do people.pay upwards of £1000 for pedigree kittens when the world is full of strays and abandoned cats? I am a cat lover. A cat is a cat and I'd rather offer a home to one that nobody wants rather than a posh and beautiful one. Although I do think the op's mummy cat is adorable.

Number 1. They are nowhere near £1000!

Number 2. To many people a cat isn’t just a cat. People have preferences with dog breeds and it’s accepted that not every breed suits every home. Why are cats different? Different breeds have different traits. Many people choose breeds based on those traits, same as they choose a Labrador etc. Moggies are a mixed bag, you don’t always know what you’re getting. They make amazing pets of course but if you are looking for a specific trait you look for a specific breed.
