I have found the ULTIMATE cat litter

And I wanted to tell everyone!

I’ve literally spent years searching for the holy grail of cat litter; I have three cats who could fill an Olympic swimming pool with piss in a couple of days and no litter was lasting more than three days without stinking the place out. We’re talking daily scooping and full tray changes twice a week.

HOWEVER

I bought the Sanicat Active White Lotus Flower litter on a whim a month ago. The clumping power is incredible, it smells amazing even when it’s full of wee and poo. Everything comes out in a scoop and leaves lovely clean, fresh litter behind in the tray. I’ve done one full tray change after a whole month of using it. One!

Just wanted to share because I’m sure there’s someone else out there needing this 😂

I use Katkin Scoop Planet and it’s amazing. It clumps well, eliminates odour and is biodegradable. The tray only has to be completely changed about once a fortnight. I’ve had cats for 45 years and have never used a litter that comes anywhere near it.

FLUSHING CAT WASTE!

I mentioned in my post about flushing cat waste down the toilet. As the packaging on most corn pellets states that its flushable, so that's what I have been doing as I assumed it was no different than ours. Having now read on the Internet that it should not be flushed, please pop the pee clumps and of course the poo into a dogy poo bag and dispose of it correctly.

You’ve also mentioned flushing wet wipes down the toilet and water companies in the UK would strongly recommend that no wet wipes, even biodegradable ones, should ever be flushed as they cause blockages and are a major component of fatbergs in the sewers. Hopefully you now don’t flush these either.

FLUSHING WIPES!

The wet wipes I am referring to, but should have made it clear are toilet flushable wipes used to clean your bum after a poo!
Which wipes are really flushable?

This is what I have read!

SafeFlush Technology. Cottonelle Flushable Wipes are designed to be safe for septic and sewer systems. They feature SafeFlush Technology, which means they start to break down immediately after flushing.
Also the Andrex Washlets range is not only biodegradable, but also completely plastic free, made of all natural fibres and, unlike normal wet wipes, they can be flushed down the toilet.

Since having 2 cats in 2009 and have only increased the number of cats since then, who the hell does not do a full litter change every day?! OP says 3 cats “who could fill an Olympic swimming pool with piss in a couple of days”...
I'd like to see what 3 humans could fill an Olympic swimming pool with piss in a couple of days.
Probably a zombie thread revived but my point still stands.

Who on earth has time to fully change the litter tray every day? And the expense!

Have you never heard of hyperbole? Confused

Pleased to report we are still using the litter and we do not do a full tray change every day because we don’t need to. It clumps SO well that all wee is absorbed by the litter so can be simply scooped out with zero residue and no lingering smell. The rest of the litter remains squeaky clean so why do you think it needs to be changed? We top up whatever has been scooped out and sprinkle a bit of litter powder in, but the unused litter stays in the tray. You don’t need to change the whole tray daily unless you’re using non-clumping, rubbish litter.

Are you really changing it every day? How much does that cost you - are you putting really shallow amounts in? One 10l bag of the litter I use (Amazon bentonite) fills the three trays I have. It costs £13.50 per bag and weighs 7.5kg dry! There is no way I could change it every day - the bin wouldn't take it, never mind the £££.

CAT LITTER ..... PLEASE READ!

Some cat litters can contain ingredients that are harmful to cats, people, including your children or the environment:

Clay litter.
Contains sodium bentonite, a chemical that causes clumping and is dangerous if ingested or inhaled. Clay litter can also be environmentally harmful because it's strip mined from natural environments and ends up in our landfills. Check the complete packaging to see if the cat litter contains bentonite. If it does then avoid big time!

Silica litter.
Contains crystalline silica, which can create dust that's harmful to inhale. Inhaling silica dust can cause health issues for the lungs and kidneys. That includes your pets, children and you! Avoid big time!

Paper litter.
Again, contains sodium bentonite, which is a health hazard for people and cats. Paper litter is also not very absorbent and doesn't control odors very well. Again avoid big time!

Much safer alternatives.

If you're looking for a safer cat litter, you can consider options made from natural ingredients like corn, wheat, or wood, wood pellets are however quite dusty. Corn cat litter is safe for both cats and humans, and is very absorbent, 99% dust free. Amorphous silica gel cat litter, also known as crystal litter, is non-toxic if ingested or inhaled. Having lots of furry babies, I have tried every type of cat litter, in my opinion, Tofu Corn Pellets are the best. Not the cheapest, but cheap is never a good thing. Super absorbent, soft on the paws, very small pellets about 1mm diameter and 1cm long. Yes it tracks, but every litter does. It's part of owning a furry fluffy cat. Babies poo, and that stinks, but that is part of having a baby.

Please don't buy scented cat litter, make sure it's unscented. Scented might smell lovely to you, but your cat's sense of smell is 9–16 times stronger than a human's. Cats have more than 200 million odor-sensitive cells in their noses, while humans have only about 5 million. So imagine how over powering the litter is to your furry baby. This also applies if you use any type of air fresheners.

I put about 2.5cm - 1 inch depth of corn litter, and the best way I have found to easily clean the pee clumps, is to :

  1. Take the litter tray to your bathroom. 2) Tip it slightly so the litter falls to one side and away from the clump. This leaves the clump on it's own, don't use a scoop, but cover with toilet tissue, give it a slight twist that releases it from the tray. Wipe the litter tray where the clump has been with some toilet paper. For poo, then simply use your scoop.

I have not yet found a track free litter, big deal! Simply buy a litter mat, there are a few different types. Honeycomb double layer design and one layer silicone or you can try a microfiber noodle bath mat.

I hope this information will help, and please look after your fur babies, they are like children but will always need you.

My boy's tray is 48cm x 76cm , I'd give myself a hernia ! Grin

GonnaBeYoniThisChristmas · 10/11/2024 09:51

OP thank you for the recommendation- always on the lookout for ways to litter trays less gross! Do they do the same type of litter unscented?

stormsandsunshine · 10/11/2024 13:25

If you need to fully change the litter tray every day, I’d suggest you should investigate a new litter.

Even when we had non clumping litter (when kittens were new) it was still fine for 3-4 days or so. Now we’ve switched to clumping it doesn’t need changing more than once a week. I work in the room the litter tray is currently in and definitely notice if it gets pongy!

We’re now using Greenwood’s after a recommendation on here. It is made of corn, smells lovely and natural (when fresh!) and clumps well.

You can do the same where the litter tray is, no problem, just a bit easier!

Don't really understand what you are saying. I have tried to help, simply giving my own experience with cat litter as we have many cats. It's funny how people can't just say thanks or no thanks. World would be a nicer place.
