What do you feed your cat?

I know this has been done to death but what do you feed your cat and how much/many times a day? My new rescue is currently on webbox with a bit of dry food throughout the day too. She's only just under 3kg.

We were feeding our 6 indoor cats scrumbles dry food. It's become ridiculously expensive so we've transitioned them to go cat. They love it and their poops are less smelly and firmer. They eat from a gravity trough which lasts them two days and they can graze as and when they want.

Toddlerteaplease · 26/04/2023 09:51

Iams vitality. Everything else makes Cheddar sick. Tried scrumbles and some of the 'better' ones. But the kibbles are too small for their flat faces and they can't eat it.

Reluctantadult · 26/04/2023 09:53

Mine is diabetic now so I would strongly advise anyone who asks me, to feed a low sugar low carb food, high in protein. Sheba is the cheapest I found available 'on the shelf'.

DogDream · 26/04/2023 09:58

Raw. I’ve tried a few types and Luna&Me works out the cheapest and definitely most loved. One ‘burger’ = one days worth of food so I find it really easy to portion too.

Like @Reluctantadult high protein, no carb/sugars/fillers was my priority. (And high moisture content because of how prone cats are to kidney problems.)

And like @DidyouNO it improved their poo which is an added bonus.

dementedpixie · 26/04/2023 10:09

Thrive/bozita dry which are higher meat and low carb.
I give a variety of wet foods that they mostly tolerate but sometimes turn their nose up at.

andymary · 26/04/2023 10:39

For our small British Shorthair cat, 3 years old.

Breakfast -
Half a pouch of Gourmet Perle in Gravy wet cat food, with a small portion of Whiskas dry biscuits on the side.

Dinner -
Full pouch of Gourmet Perle in Gravy wet cat food with a small portion of Whiskas dry biscuits on the side.

Bedtime Treat -
One Webbox stick.

She also has access to a tray of cat grass.

dementedpixie · 26/04/2023 10:50

I just leave dry food out all the time and then give ½ pouch each a couple of times a day. Sometimes they get a cat soup.

They like webbox sticks and those freeze dried meat treats and dreamies. They think dh is a walking treats dispenser!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 28/04/2023 17:15

James wellbeloved kibble, the senior one.

My cat has an autoimmune condition and this seems to suit her the best.

TinyKitty · 29/04/2023 23:25

Feringa
Macs
Animonda Carny
Thrive
Yarrah
Almo Nature (the complete Almo one)
Rosie's Farm
Cosma soup for a treat.

All high meat content and grain free. I also choose sugar free. Because of the meat content it's not necessary to feed as much as the Felix/Whiskas crap which is full of grain and sugar. No dry food, especially GoCat which was known as Gone Cat because it was so bad. Dry food is empty calouries and not suitable for an obligate carnivore.

If you need a good economy wet food, try Butchers Classic, no grain, no sugar.

I have a small cat and feed around 150 - 175g per day, split into 3 or 4 meals, no treats like Dreamies or any other rubbish stuff as I am maintaining a weighloss programme. I have had a diabetic cat that couldn't be saved, was always fed on the cheapest stuff before he came to me, I don't want to go through that again.

My cat eats better than I do.

TinyKitty · 29/04/2023 23:26

I shop on Zooplus mostly. Butchers is available in lots of shops, tins or pouches.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 30/04/2023 00:09

Our three indoor cats get 100g of Felix AGAIL wet food per day (split into two meals) and then unlimited access to Purina Urinary S/D food as the youngest has struvite crystals.

He won't eat the urinary wet food so the vet just told us to feed whatever he'll eat.

Luckily they all eat the same thing quite happily.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 30/04/2023 00:26

Wainwrights biscuits for all three, they just graze through the day.

Although baby cat (Alfie, 8 months) had an altercation with a car a few weeks ago so has been having Sheba soups twice a day as he had 4 different meds to Mix into food.

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 01:13

Aldi tins of salmon or chicken cat food. 1/2 a tin each morning, crunchies for lunch, 1/2 a tin each for dinner. On Sundays I often cook them a large chicken breast to share.

Kyse · 30/04/2023 01:14

Feringa, Scrumbles, thrive, lilys kitchen, all wet and no dry
2.8kg elderly boy that eats like a horse. Usually 3 pouches a day, sometimes more
He has a Cosma cat soup every morning with his supplements in

caringcarer · 30/04/2023 01:18

Sometimes they have sachets. My large male cat will eat 2 pouches at once my little female does not quite finish one pouch. Pouches morning and night with kibble at lunch time.

cheesywotsit62 · 30/04/2023 01:39

Has anyone got any good recommendations for a senior cat?

Bongosbanjo · 30/04/2023 01:46

My lad would like to eat chips and chocolate but I feed him one wet pouch, normally encoure in jelly with royal canin weight control dry to munch on when urge to scoff chips gets too strong. Wee fatty is also quite fond of chewing on me, not sure he realises I need to be alive to feed him.

There are senior versions of most of the crap foods, however a good diet is more important than wasting money of senior versions of the crap stuff. The list I posted above is almost all meat content, with some stock and if you think about what a cat would eat naturally it would be protein, no added cereal/grain or sugar, and grass or herbs, stomach contents of prey so no need to buy the overpriced maize filled crap.

For kidney disease there is still no need to buy special food as it is possible to adjust diet, if that becomes an issue.

Dy food is, generally for the convenience of the carer rather than the health of the cat and is, on the whole full of grains, potato, weird combinations of fruit and the rubbish meat and fish meal which is the crap that can't be used for anything else, it is then sprayed with flavour enhancers to make the carbs taste like actual food.

custardbear · 30/04/2023 10:38

Mine are hilarious because the dog and them play musical food bowls. They will eat felix, whiskas, webbox, Sheba, Morrisons own label, they also like Butchers dog food lol 😝

They change their minds all the time and I have to change their food regularly. I also leave biscuits out for them too which they dip into throughout the day. They're pretty greedy, so keep them to 2-3 pouches each a day with bix but they sometimes wrap my kids around their paws and get a bit more lol 😆

Three pouches a day 😬

Don't tell mine - they only get one each!

ImAvingOops · 30/04/2023 15:09

Mine have blink wet food (the fish ones) and purina dry. Big cat is very good focussed and not too fussy about cat food - I have to be careful with her because she is a chunk. Little cat is less food obsessed, seems to be more fussy about brands of cat food. I give 10g kibbles 4x per day plus a pouch each. Vet said to feed big cat little but often - she definitely lets us know when it's a meal time. I can't leave kibbles out for grazing as big cat would eat for two!

MidlandCatGirl · 30/04/2023 17:32

Mine boy has two handfuls of Scrumbles for breakfast - has to be spaced out (eat, 5min pause, 2nd portion) or he will eat too fast and throw it all up. He was a rescue so he has a real “eat as much as I can as I don’t know when my next meal is” attitude.

For dinner he has either a small tin of Lily’s Kitchen or a raw Purrform sachet. Once a week he’ll have a tin of mackerel or sardines. Before bed he’ll have a few dental and anti-hairball treats.

As he uses a litter tray I opted for the above foods to make his poop less noxious and it really works. Some days I’m digging around in the tray like it’s a fairground lucky dip as you just can’t smell it and he’s hidden it so well 😂.

Haveallthesongsbeenwritten · 30/04/2023 17:35

Our cat is 5, indoors and quite lean. She mostly eat dry food, i buy wet food in gravy and she probably would nibble on that once a week…
dry food is royal canin and i buy a variety of all the bags they have: protein, fussy eater, indoors, oral… etc and i mix everyday a bit of the different bags. I dont have feeding time, i top up her bowl. Again she is very different to any cat I ever had, she only nibbles few times a day. Also she is crazy about the seaside mix from Felix!

My senior girl likes James wellbeloved senior kibble, she has stayed well on it despite being on like long steroids so I rate it.

It has got progressively more expensive though 😒

ImAvingOops · 30/04/2023 18:15

Cat food is mad expensive. And o live in fear of the supermarket being out of stock of the brand they will eat!
