How to get the effing cat into the effing box

My beautiful cat is terrified of any change and I have presented her with another one. I've bought one of those two-piece litter trays - the top bit is really there to create a higher wall, but it doesn't have a lid, and it has a little front doorway. It's part of a long term vision and corporate strategy to move her onto biodegradable litter, which in a normal height litter tray, she kicks over the house.
She will use the litter tray without the top piece (so essentially it's like a normal litter tray). Madam desists from using it with the top bit in place.
So far I have tried:
Leaving her to get on with it (DH's strategy)
Sitting next to litter tray and moving the litter around (so she understands that litter is inside) and making encouraging noises
Putting her in it (I know; rookie mistake; cue lots of shouting and sulking)
Any ideas?
Here is a picture of said litter tray in case my Byzantine description is unclear:

Personally I would use the litter tray and litter that your cat prefers.

LostCats · 21/04/2023 11:14

Sorry OP but your post made me giggle.
Although I must say that box is very cunning! I’ve never seen one like that.
I’m of no use unfortunately as we use catsan with a lidded box as otherwise DCat sits on the edge and tips it deliberately for giggles (his - not ours!)

sugaringthecrumpet · 21/04/2023 12:58

Some cats will do anything for giggles, sadly. Though kudos to your cat for managing a tray with a lid.

I think cat is unconvinced about the long term vision and has seen through your corporate strategy and is trying to undermine it through deliberate insider trading/outside the litter tray sabotage.

Is it big enough length wise? Maybe it's not the high sides cat is objecting to. Or is there one not quite so high so cat can (just) see over it whilst still keepng the litter contained?

I Iike the idea of that tray though. If temporary cat stays much longer I'm going to have get something like that as he's a very enthusiast ic digger and most of the litter is on the floor after every visit. And treading on bits of Catsan in bare feet is almost as bad as bloody Lego.

WandaWonder · 21/04/2023 13:20

Has anyone successfully negotiated with a cat?

amylou8 · 21/04/2023 14:01

We have this tray (or something similar I can't see the pic) and DCat still manages to kick litter everywhere, I swear she was a rabbit in a former life. It has however stopped her bum in air peeing technique getting it over the top of the tray.

pickledandpuzzled · 21/04/2023 14:04

Where is the photo?

I have seen a two layer mat that collects the litter in the flexible tray beneath, allowing it to be poured back into the tray where it belongs.

Perhaps madam would prefer to try that?

SomeRolyPolyLittleBatFacedGirl · 21/04/2023 14:13

We have one with the cat flap opening and ceiling - the floor is still covered in litter. Either she holds the flap open and kicks it out, or smushes as much as possible in between her toe beans and then releases it outside.

BrainWontWorkAnymore · 21/04/2023 14:13

Where is your cat tax btw- photo please

Floralnomad · 21/04/2023 14:16

My sister has just bought Catit litter mats for under her litter trays that collect any loose litter , they are excellent .

If she will use the litter tray without the lid, could you get her into a higher sided tray like this one as she could be objecting to the cat litter tray changing with you putting on and taking off the collar rather than the high sides themselves?

If you now have two trays, and assuming she’s not peeing on the carpet (or elsewhere in the house) instead of using a tray, could you leave some litter from a used tray in the new tray whilst the collar is on so it has some of her own scent to it, and let her come round to it? I used to have a cat who would easily hold onto her pee for 24 hours+ if her routine was disturbed.

I have to say that I have high sided trays, and have used the type of mat that pickled mentions, and it didn’t stop all of the litter being tracked.

LiliLil · 21/04/2023 14:51

I cannot possibly advise until I have seen a photo of your cat.

sugaringthecrumpet · 21/04/2023 16:25

Thank you for all of these thoughts. I think the broad consensus is that she may still kick it everywhere, even if I create a Hadrian's wall type affair?
However, yes: my tax payment.

I like the idea of putting some used litter in there. Well, I don't like the idea:-) but I get the wisdom behind the idea.

Did you include her in the choice before purchase - seemingly this is necessary with my lady! 😹

AllotmentTime · 21/04/2023 17:04

It's part of a long term vision and corporate strategy to move her onto biodegradable litter,

Following extensive discussions with all the relevant stakeholders, I presume? No??

In that case I’d suggest holding a town hall and explaining that onboarding will be mandatory for everyone for the new system. This will be a gradual process at the end of which the whole team is expected to be fully integrated.

In other words, stick the tray in a corner like a PP said, so she gets used to two walls. Stay with just two walls for a bit and then put the not-lid next to the tray to be the third “wall”. And then when she’s used to that, try the whole thing reattached again.

Meanwhile maybe leave the not-lid somewhere completely different with a few Dreamies inside? So she gets used to going in and is less timid about it when your reattach it to the litter tray.

You may need to reconsider the timescale of this project and advise colleagues (your Dh) that the final go live will be later than originally planned..

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/04/2023 17:27

Despite their love of tight places and small boxes, cats are a bit funny about where they poo and many like it to be open so they can't be snuck up on. I put Dcat's existing litter trays in a deep box. He has 2 trays next to each other (a remnant from before his brother was run over) and he doesn't seem to mind that and the outer box contains all the kicked out cat litter very well.

tailinthejam · 21/04/2023 17:34

Find a giant cardboard box at least twice the size of the tray. Cut the sides down to about a foot, and make an entrance-way as well. Place said litter tray inside giant box. You catch the scratched-up litter in the cardboard box, and box can be re-used or replaced when necessary. Hopefully that will get the cat used to the idea of peeing in a confined space. If it doesn't work, then it hasn't cost you anything.

sugaringthecrumpet · 21/04/2023 19:47

A veritable smorgasbord of suggestions - thank you, all! @AllotmentTime , you have identified the key project flaw- I did indeed fail to engage my stakeholders at the proposal stage. I hope that we can come back from this.
I can report one quick-win- Dreamies, as recommended, in the not-lid- cat jumped into not-lid- and inhaled Dreamies. Project Sponsor (DH) has asked if The Dmn cat will want Dreamies each time she takes a s*.
That's a risk that I am willing to accommodate.
@TwigTheWonderKid and @tailinthejam , the double boxing technique is ingenious. I may opt for this if the first strategy crashes and burns.
I ought not to have changed anything, oughtn't I?

Leave both trays out, she’ll use it one day when she’s decided it’s safe. Pretend you don’t care if she uses it or not.

Until then just hope she doesn’t set up a hostile take over of your company, have HR escort you off the premises & embezzle your pension funds before emigrating to Patagonia.

sugaringthecrumpet · 22/04/2023 08:10

@FormerlyPathologicallyHappy sadly I believe that she is morally capable of all of these things.

OP posts:
FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 22/04/2023 09:49

The trick is to always act like you don’t care if they do it or not.

sugaringthecrumpet · 22/04/2023 19:59

Indeed - they are essentially small psychopaths.
