Litter, that doesn't smell?

We have been using the cats best litter for a long time but the tracking is driving me insane. Tried wood pellets but they have a really odd smell.

Litter tray is cleaned pretty much as soon as it's been used and cleaned out properly, disinfected etc once every 3-4 weeks.

Someone has to clean the litter as soon as it's been used because otherwise it's smells badly. My cats arse absolutely stinks!

Is there a litter that has odour control that is clumping and doesn't track so badly?

3-4 weeks, am I reading that correctly?

Theunamedcat · 19/04/2023 05:58

I hear you on the tracking its bloody insane I've got mats down and everything

AspinallaSmythe · 19/04/2023 05:59

Cats best smart pellets, not the ordinary one. Yes @Justmuddlingalong, a good litter doesn’t need changing very frequently.

No, you're not. OP said she changes the litter every 3-4 weeks and takes out crap straight away.

OP, I think you need to look at a raw diet. I have a fee cats with litterboxes in bedrooms, that's the only thing that results in no smell.

Justmuddlingalong · 19/04/2023 06:03

Yes, I read that it was cleared straight away, but I was surprised at the time between new litter and replacing it.
No offence meant.

TroysMammy · 19/04/2023 06:07

My cat eats Hills and when he does use the tray there is hardly any smell. He mainly goes out and uses my garden and then walks back in the house with his dirty paws!

WildFlowerBees · 19/04/2023 06:07

Tried a raw diet, they weren't playing. They eat decent food high meat content etc such as blink, meowing heads but Jesus the smell! I seem to be forever cleaning the litter tray. Pee and poo comes out as soon as it's been done unless it's overnight or we're out.

I don't think emptying the tray every 3-4 weeks to clean it properly and disinfect etc is bad is it?!

I read Catsan was good but wasn't sure which one.

Only one of ours uses the litter tray, both have the option of outside. We have an outdoor litter tray we made which one uses. Which Hills food do you give?

We did infect once a week, meaning he gets a full refresh once a week. We use cat san, it gets everywhere! He loves kicking it about, but I'm scared to change it incase he stops using the tray.

There was a litter odour spray in Asda maybe that would help you. But I would be disinfecting more often.

WildFlowerBees · 19/04/2023 06:51

I would love to get rid of the litter tray, drives me nuts. I'll dump it today and start again. The litter itself has a weird smell is there anything that doesn't have an odour?

I use this too, two big cats, no smell! It's the best litter I have used, hardly any tracking and lasts for ages. Would be helpful though if my girl cat would actually cover her poo...sigh.

I see that you have tried raw feeding with no luck. Maybe try some more different foods (gradually whilst mixing with current food). Maybe you will find something that gives less stink!

Also, we need a picture of this stinky villain!

Disgustedandfreakedout · 19/04/2023 06:58

Breeder Select doent smell

neerg · 19/04/2023 07:03

I think different cat litters suit different cats. You may have to try a few before you fi d your litter. I use 'Odourlock' ultra clumping cat litter. Suits us!!!

PetronellaOsgood · 19/04/2023 07:18

Worlds Best cat litter, the only one I've used that doesn't smell at all. It clumps so easy to remove after use. 4 cats, 2 trays, cleaned, disinfected and fully replaced weekly.

bellinisurge · 19/04/2023 07:40

Catsan here. One indoor cat. Open litter box in bathroom with a kind of lip around the edge. Poo removed as soon as. Cleaned, disinfected once a week.

bellinisurge · 19/04/2023 07:40

Oh and grain free food.

Roundandnour · 19/04/2023 07:53

Carson was one of the worse for us and it was obvious there were cats somewhere in the house. Had to change it every couple of days. Had a little carpet tile to stop the tracking.

Someone on here mentioned wood and the difference is amazing.

I switch between Petax wood or Natusan. Dump the crap and any clumps. No smell unless I’ve given them something new that doesn’t agree with them. Change every 4 weeks. No trail. Doesn’t stick to the tray like some do.

it was a pita trying various litters. Asked cat friends for their recommendations, swapped some litter for something else. Bought the smallest possible bags and the stuff that didn’t work either gave to friends or cat rescues.

Same as treats and food tbh. I must have the only cats that throw up on dreamies 😂

Roundandnour · 19/04/2023 07:55

*catsan not Carson bloody auto correct

WildFlowerBees · 19/04/2023 08:02

Does catsan track? We have a coveted litter tray but she still flicks it everywhere she's not content until she's reached the bottom of her litter until she's down to the plastic and kicking the litter about. She has no manners for a Dutchess.

Tried a tracking mat, that was a nightmare. They're on grain free food. Maybe I need to put a carpet rug underneath the tray?

Litter tray is currently outside having been cleaned and disinfected. Once I put it back in I give her 3 minutes before she's in there trashing the place.

3-4 weeks is too long. Try changing it out once a week, your smell problem should disappear.

Mocky · 19/04/2023 08:06

Honestly? I think sometimes you just have to accept that cats are a pain in the arse, and put up with it.

LilacpointMummy · 19/04/2023 08:11

Have you tried a top-entry litter tray? There's not a huge difference in smell, but a real game-changer for tracking.

Also cat litter freshener helps - I sprinkle it on every time I scoop a poo and it really makes a difference to the smell.

I feel quite ashamed that we haven't been more vigilant. It'll get done weekly from now on. Blush
