Adopting a rescue ragdoll

My beloved old recue ex feral cat died a few weeks ago at around 14 years
( might have been older due to being feral and vet guessed at age) I loved her so much and didn't want to commit to another cat, unless with time and then another unwanted ex feral cat.
I still looked at local animal rescue website and a ragdoll cat was up for adoption. I have had a rescue Persian (severely neglected before she went into shelter), for 12 years so used to the behaviour of Persians and the grooming (although Persian hated it)
The ragdoll has big issue with with spraying, hence the reason he is in rescue centre (he wee'd on my handbag when I met him in shelter)
He is being neutured whch might help, my last cat was a female and the lovely people at the animal rescue said he might spray because of the scent of my last cat.
So I am asking you lovely people, how I can help him adapt to his new environment?
Been on the ragdoll websites but they are often American based and recommend washing them twice a month etc which I do not think neccessary after my experience with my Persian.
I have purchased some feliway spray, organised Petplan insurance.
I am looking at beds, used to cats sleeping on my bed but if he is used to cat bed, would love advice on a good one for a big 12 month old cat.

Last thing (honest!) Never had a cat that has not been a cat that goes outside. I have read that ragdolls can't go outside. I live in an semi-urban environment but a quiet one with park opposite. Could I take him to park, even if on lead to sit with me? Can provide pics of cat!

Oh, what a gorgeous boy. And he seems to be making himself at home.

PuppyMonkey · 16/04/2023 15:46

Aww, even with the cone of shame, he’s a handsome devil.

Floralnomad · 16/04/2023 15:55

He’s lovely , is he using his litter tray ok

Ghostofborleyrectory · 16/04/2023 15:59

Thanks, he is utterly beautiful and so friendly. Not used litter tray yet so keeping him in room with it on advice of the rescue centre. Apparently has been doing well with it since operation. Already in love, fingers crossed he will stay healthy.

He has settled in beautifully, explored thoroughly and has his favourite chair, favourite discarded sock to play with and is just a fluffy delight.

When we looked at him at animal shelter, he pissed on my handbag! My boyfriend likes a non-piss smelling house but I was brought up in houses full of dogs and cats with terrible behaviour ( and smelling like piss) so wasn't enormously bothered, hoped could sort it out and he has been wonderful at littertray. I, on advice from animal shelter left litter tray in front room so it was accessible when he had to keep him in front room for a few days to get him used to using it.Would quite like to move it to somewhere less obvious but dont want to put him off.

Oh, he looks just like my ragdoll who also ignores any cat beds in favour of a cardboard box or mum and dads bed😻

So glad he has settled well, he is a very lucky cat😻

Lovely to see a happy ending for your beautiful boy.

@Ghostofborleyrectory I just wondered how Loki was doing?

My British Shorthair had the same operation seven years ago and recovered perfectly. He’s never had any problems since either (he is on a urinary diet though). I hope it’s been the same for Loki. He’s so lucky he found you. Ragdolls are the best, I have two and they are so laid back and loving. Mine definitely aren’t thick, one of them can fetch a ball and open cupboards, the other one definitely picks up on my moods and will try to comfort me if I’m sad.

MadKittenWoman · 29/10/2023 18:10

Our ragdoll went outside (had to be pts with FIP a few years ago aged 13) so do the two brothers across the road. Please don't read American websites; they have odd ideas about cats. Ragdolls can fight and hunt as well as any other cat, and they certainly don't need washing or any other nonsense. They are gorgeous, affectionate cats- enjoy!
