Adopting a rescue ragdoll

My beloved old recue ex feral cat died a few weeks ago at around 14 years
( might have been older due to being feral and vet guessed at age) I loved her so much and didn't want to commit to another cat, unless with time and then another unwanted ex feral cat.
I still looked at local animal rescue website and a ragdoll cat was up for adoption. I have had a rescue Persian (severely neglected before she went into shelter), for 12 years so used to the behaviour of Persians and the grooming (although Persian hated it)
The ragdoll has big issue with with spraying, hence the reason he is in rescue centre (he wee'd on my handbag when I met him in shelter)
He is being neutured whch might help, my last cat was a female and the lovely people at the animal rescue said he might spray because of the scent of my last cat.
So I am asking you lovely people, how I can help him adapt to his new environment?
Been on the ragdoll websites but they are often American based and recommend washing them twice a month etc which I do not think neccessary after my experience with my Persian.
I have purchased some feliway spray, organised Petplan insurance.
I am looking at beds, used to cats sleeping on my bed but if he is used to cat bed, would love advice on a good one for a big 12 month old cat.

Last thing (honest!) Never had a cat that has not been a cat that goes outside. I have read that ragdolls can't go outside. I live in an semi-urban environment but a quiet one with park opposite. Could I take him to park, even if on lead to sit with me? Can provide pics of cat!

Yes maybe nurturing will help, mine has been done since he was 6 months old.

I hope it all works out, he looks gorgeous

I have 2 Ragdolls, a boy and a girl and both are clever .I don’t get this ‘ragdolls are as thick as mince ‘ I’ve seen countless times on here .
They come when called , know their name and talk back when spoken to !

I let mine out but both stay close to home and I live overlooking a private enclosed garden .My girl doesn’t stay out for long but bothare much happier now that the can go out again into a garden ( I had to move recently and stayed temporarily in 3rd floor flat for a few months where the stayed indoors ) I think cats over 2 years old ie. not kittens are much more cautious and mine certainly know how to run away from people if they don’t know them .

Your Loki looks very like my girl - she is beautiful and so is he !
Both mine are rescues and I have enjoyed every minute of the last five years owning them . Both were well looked after but the owner sadly (not for me !) had to give them up due to a child’s allergy. They are a real joy and are great company as I live on my own mostly as my son is at university.

Good luck with the wee -ing hopefully spaying him will make all the difference !

That's a pretty low bar for a cat though. I'd expect any cat to be able to do that, well when they can be bothered. They(as a breed) definitely aren't street wise in comparison to the average cat.

Loki update. The animal shelter rang again and said I can't pick him up this Saturday as he still has a urinary tract problem and the vets are scanning him so he can't be neutured yet. Hope this is the reason he has been spraying but as another poster said, might be a result of the spraying. Still want him and looking forward to having him at home, bought off advice on here, a large radiator cat bed. Still looking at cat trees.

I strongly recommend a cat barrel.

Ours was used daily by 2 large cats and was in good enough Nick to pass on after a decade!

That looks good, concerned the others might be unsteady.

Our Siamese have one of those barrels ( a 2 hole ) in the hallway , they don’t use it much .

I'm sorry that you have to wait to pick up Loki. He's so beautiful as are all of the other cats that were posted here. I hope that he improves soon.

I love our ragdoll. He came with our house and lived primarily outside when we met him. We live very rurally. He's certainly come across the creatures, big and small, that live in the fields around us, he often leaves a trail of twigs or some other fur-hiding stowaway in his wake. (Dont ask) He moved indoors with us and has had to put up with being groomed ever since. He's an old boy now and no longer leaves dead rodents as gifts on our doormat. (sometimes hidden underneath - so gift-wrapped!) We are all delighted by this development. 😳

Now, he mostly annoys our German Shepherd when bored and likes to cuddle up watching the telly. He's remain very gobby. He never stops chatting.

He's an awesome cat. I would say more laid back than daft. I can't imagine him living solely indoors and I'm surprised to hear that the entire breed would be happy with such an arrangement.

I came home once to find our boy standing off at the gate because another cat came sniffing around. I guess what I'm saying is don't assume the life he's lived before you met him was only inside. I get why the advice is so - but still, breed is only a broad marker of personality traits and instincts.

Hope he brings you lots of joy.

My ragdoll knows his name and comes running. He is also extremely chatty. We've managed to train him with several things (peekaboo, don't eat off our plates until we push them towards him, ....) but I still think he isn't as naturally streetwise as other cats.

I let him out at 5.30am the other day. 20 minutes later I went out and in the garden I saw 2 cats having a standoff. And 1m away, my silly cat frozen mid walk with his paw in the air cos he'd walked right up to them without noticing! 😀
