Need unusual cat food - pork, kangaroo, crocodile?

My vet wants us to try a totally new type of protein for my boy to see if his skin condition is caused by food. The trouble is he's had pretty much every kind of meat and fish on the shelves (even the one made of insects), so I need to find something really out there. Do you know of any weird cat food I can try? Looking for both wet and dry food.

The trouble with mainstream cat food (as I'm sure you've discovered) is that the different flavours usually only contain a small percentage of the named meat. The rest is just filler meats and other rubbish. So it's difficult to isolate a specific ingredient.

You could try Katkin - most of their recipes are 100% of the named meat eg 100% beef, 100% lamb, 100% pork etc

Loafbeginsat60 · 07/03/2023 13:18

Could you cook for him? Fresh meat and fish might be heaps better than processed tinned stuff.

Fwiw our cat has horrendous skin and it turned out it was some sort of pollen allergy and she gets an injection twice a year which stops it. She scratched herself raw poor baby.

I can find out the name of the injection if you haven't ruled out pollen?

minipie · 07/03/2023 13:22

this looks useful although the foods recommended may not be sold here.

Venison? Duck? A white fish he probably hasn’t had … ?
You can feed them the meat/fish directly, it doesn’t need to be in cat food form.

Erm… Mice???

viques · 07/03/2023 13:24

Second katkin, they do a two week trial , which might be enough time to tell if the irritation is lessening. Cats on katkin don’t need dry food as well. As above, unless you are cooking the food yourself you have to rely on the ingredients listed, and eliminating those would be impossible for most commercial brands.

This butcher has lots of exotic meats, from Alpaca to Zebra: www.keziefoods.co.uk/product-category/exotic-meats/page/3/.

I've used Kiezebrink for my cats for years, very happily. Does require decent freezer space to make it worth it long term, though.

I think Bozita from zooplus comes in some unusual flavours, you could try that. Otherwise second Katkin, it's the only food that my tom cat with a very sensitive stomach can eat.

Cinnamontoas · 07/03/2023 13:35

Have a look at Paleo Ridge. The classic range is 80/10/10 with no added veggies so also suitable for cats. They do venison, kangaroo and other novel proteins

ploik · 07/03/2023 13:35

Kiezebrink

Link doesn't work, try that link instead.

OhhhhhhhhBiscuits · 07/03/2023 13:37

Bozita do a lot of different meat like Reindeer which is very high in protein and no grain. Can be found on zooplus.

CatJumperTwat · 07/03/2023 14:09

Thanks for the links and suggestions!

To clarify, the problem isn't finding good quality cat food - he already has that. The issue is finding a type of meat/fish he's never eaten before. So 100% chicken etc is not going to work.

I’m experiencing similar with my cat, terrible skin and been advised against long term use of steroids. Vet has recommended hypoallergenic food. James wellbeloved and royal canin do a dry one, can’t seem to find a wet one, she’s fussy about wet food. Tried cooking and she turned her nose up just wants whiskas and felix.

CatJumperTwat · 07/03/2023 14:25

Imtryingnottobother We can't use steroids long-term either as he's FIV+. Sad

Picklechamp · 07/03/2023 14:28

Has vet ruled out pemphigus?

Imtryingnottobother · 07/03/2023 14:31

Have you tried hypoallergenic food. I’m gonna try that for next few months and introduce proteins, one by one to see which one is triggering the skin.
Thats is the plan. The little beggar’s addicted to whiskas and felix, so we’ll see how it goes 🤞

DoraChance · 07/03/2023 16:07

Hills do one that's made from pea protein which my cat who has terrible skin problems did pretty well on.

Allergictoironing · 07/03/2023 18:40

When you're looking at different types of meats that you don't get in cat food, do bear in mind that cats need taurine in their diet which you don't get in meat alone. Have a look on a raw feeding web site - I'm not suggesting raw food particularly, but that should have some indication on how to get taurine into a cat who's on "human" type food.

FiddlefigOnTheRoof · 07/03/2023 19:06

Yora - insect based dry food, relatively high protein

CatJumperTwat · 07/03/2023 19:37

He loves Yora 😁

I'm not thinking of a raw / human diet unless I get desperate. I'm vegetarian and opening a pouch is enough for me!

Republic of cats will do a taster box for £1

Don't know if they're any better specifically but they were all my old cat would eat in the end

dementedpixie · 07/03/2023 19:47

Feringa seems to do single meat varieties of wet food. Bitiba sells it

GiantKitten · 07/03/2023 20:02

Just checked out Bozita flavours on zooplus.
They do CRAYFISH! That sounds pretty different! Shrimp too.
Also elk as well as reindeer, and duck & mackerel.

GiantKitten · 07/03/2023 20:04

Oh - ingredients still mostly the usuals 😕

Crayfish:

Chicken, crayfish (7.2% in chunks), pork, beef, calcium carbonate, dill*, yeast (ß-1.3/1.6 glucan 0.01%).

Mackerel:

Chicken, mackerel (7.2% in chunks), pork, beef, calcium carbonate, yeast* (ß -1,3/1,6-glucan 0.01%).

Posting just to keep the thread, very interesting, hope you find a solution for your fozzy boy, OP.
