New cat has been gone for 10hours

We adopted a cat 3 weeks ago after losing our previous kitty.

The new cat is a curious 2 year old who settled in with us super quickly. We started letting her out each day this week to explore the garden.

She was last seen today about 10:30am inside my neighbours house. Seen again by the same neighbour in her garden around 2pm.

I’ve left the back door open all day and have been around the block calling for her & shaking her dreamies bag frequently through the day and in to the evening. No luck so far (but I’ve attracted 3 other cats)! I’ve also put her litter tray outside and sprinkled some of the litter by our back gate (luckily she had just used it before heading out so it was nice and stinky).

Any further tips to get her back?

She’s microchipped but her collar came off in the neighbour’s house. I’m concerned by this as she mistakingly had her ear cut by vets when rescued to identify her as a feral cat even though she’s not feral.

Any reassurance greatly welcomed!

I adopted a street cat, knew nothing about him, so kept him in for 5 weeks.
I let him out one Sunday morning as we were in all day. He was scared stiff and ran back in. The next day he got braver, and disappeared for 13 hours. I didn't think he would come back but 7 years later he's still here.
I hope she is back very soon.

BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers · 10/02/2023 09:43

Is she spayed? Just wondering if she's found herself a boyfriend for the time being. She might have got shut in a shed by accident (this happened to a cat on our road - she got locked in my neighbour's shed and spent all night silently waiting to be released) or might be hiding nearby in a bush thinking it's a game. Hoping she comes back very soon!

sevenbyseven · 10/02/2023 14:29

To be fair, Cats Protection advise 3-4 weeks 🤷

HumourReplacementTherapy · 10/02/2023 14:47

Aww I hope he returns from his travels soon.

ChorserSaucer · 10/02/2023 21:15

thanks again, all!

@sevenbysevenvery true!

We’ve started to put posters up now and I set her microchip to “lost” with an alert going to local vets.

I’m just going to keep posting here what we’re doing as finding her is all I can think about.

All fingers crossed for you 🤞🏼

Fernticket · 11/02/2023 12:44

OP. I had a similar situation with a rescue cat that I had kept in for many weeks before letting her out.
She went missing for 4 days, it was awful.
She came back on the 4th night. I was so relieved. I feel your pain and I hope she comes home soon.

MyOldFriendTime · 11/02/2023 14:19

Where did she come from OP? Could she have tried to make her way back there? Maybe worth a look if it's not too far.

Hopefully the posters will work, put them up at busy places like bus stops/shops and (down low) outside schools - kids love looking out for a cat on their walk home.

Hope she's home soon 💐

ChorserSaucer · 11/02/2023 18:17

It’s passed the 48hr mark now.
Some potential sightings which we’ve explored but no sign of her yet. One positive lead I’ll follow up later in the night when it’s quieter. The neighbour’s have been so nice and so helpful!

I’ve spoken to or left a note with everyone in our street and some close houses on the adjoining roads. I’ll be putting up posters in adjoining roads too. Feel a bit uncomfortable about having my number on the posters as there are lots of teenagers that cause issues in the area. Do you think an email address would suffice?

@Fernticket that’s so reassuring to hear. We also had some reassuring stories from neighbours when talking to them.

@MyOldFriendTime no idea where she was rescued from (would rspca pass on that type of information??) but the rescue centre is in a rural location. One of their workers is aware she’s missing as lives local.

@BellatrixLestrangesHeatedCurlers she is neutered but there are lots of tom cats in the immediate area. One neighbour thought they may have seen our cat in a noisy stand off with one of the regular toms.

MyOldFriendTime · 11/02/2023 18:55

No I don't suppose they'd tell you where she came from and if the rspca was involved I doubt she's making her way back there anyway.

Yes use an email instead of a phone number, that's a good idea. When my cat was missing I got 4 prank calls from local teens/young sounding people 🙄 idiots. Set up a notification on your emails though in case anyone spots her and you need to get there asap.

It's good that you've had sightings. Hopefully you can track her down soon 🤞

Aldisfinest · 11/02/2023 18:59

Hope you find her OP, you all must be so worried.

NoSquirrels · 11/02/2023 19:01

Have you posted on local FB and NextDoor?

Yesthatismychildsigh · 11/02/2023 19:03

My old tart of a rescue lad barged open a partially open upstairs window after we’d had him two weeks. Disappeared for two nights and was waiting when I got home. I felt absolutely dreadful when he was gone. It was only afterwards we caught him barging the window so realised. I’d been so confused as I was sure I’d left it a crack open. Hope he’s back soon.

EmmaEmerald · 11/02/2023 20:43

I'd put an email

I really hope you find her asap.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/02/2023 20:55

I’m sure she hasn’t gone far. She probably watching you. Can you borrow a cat trap? I’ve had success in the past finding lost cats that way.

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 21:10

Ffs 3 weeks!!! God why are people not more responsible. 3 weeks is not long enough to establish its home and a bond

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 21:11

Yarnosaura · 09/02/2023 23:14

2-3 weeks is absolutely fine before letting out for the vast majority of cats, so please don't let anyone make you feel guilty, Chorser Flowers

Do you have a cat flap? If not, unless it's completely impractical, leave a window or door open so she can get in.

They are sods though, my latest was a former semi-feral who needed to be kept in longer but who actually didn't want to go out for the first 6 months, and then on the second day she buggered off and didn't return until very late and I was in a right state.

No its actually not fine! Rescues do not recommend 2-3 weeks

purser25 · 11/02/2023 22:00

A neighbour lost their cat for several days. She turned up under a neighbours bed. She was a nervous but noisy cat she climbed in through a bedroom window then heard a noise and got under a bed and stayed there. A few days later the neighbour heard a noise in the bedroom and realised there was a cat under the bed. We lost a cat years ago for 10 days he was shut in a shed. He was fine but just a louder meow when we got him back.

Nsky62 · 11/02/2023 22:42

4 weeks is fine

With all due respect @MissMaple82 no one asked for your opinion on this, although a quick search of your username suggests giving unsolicited negative opinions isn’t new to you. Some of your quotes even making it to online news articles! Well done, you. 👍

I wonder if as a Neonatal Outreach Sister you’d be interested to know that I’m currently dealing with awful post natal depression and comments such as yours may help reaffirm the feeling I have of being a terrible person. You win! I would have thought, though, that as a Safeguarding Lead you’d know that you should be careful what you post on the internet as everything has a digital footprint. All the best to you. I hope you feel better having told a stranger on the Internet how irresponsible they are when they are clearly asking for reassurance during a tough time. 👍

Thank you everyone that’s been so kind and positive. I’m blown away by how helpful people online are and how nice and helpful people in the community have been 💕

OP I wish there was a like button. Sadly I'm starting to recognise names for all the wrong reasons.

Sunday's probably a good day for people to be home to ask. I took in a cat I found under a car once, heard her mewing from under a car and I think it was Tuesday before the local cat rescue linked her back to her owner.

she was very little and seemed okay, except when she got in a space at the side of the cooker and then took a while to figure out how to get into reverse!

ChorserSaucer · 11/02/2023 23:55

Thanks @EmmaEmerald. Luckily the rugby was on today so most people were home. She’s an affectionate little thing so I wouldn’t be surprised if someone’s taken her in for the time being. Hopefully the flyers and posters will make them realise she has a home if that is the case.

As for my post above, I’m not standing for posters barging in with a “ffs” and “why are people not more responsible” when the original post is looking for reassurance. I’m calling it out when I see it. There are politer ways to address the issue. PPs have said it in polite ways “…correct me if I’m wrong…” or “…I hope it’s not the case but…”

Ironically, @MissMaple82 was looking for a hand hold when they had a poorly elderly cat. I’m sure she wouldn’t have liked sarky comments of “that’s the chance you take when you have an older cat” or suchlike. 🤷‍♀️ Beats me why people can’t just be supportive. You never know what people are going through.

If it comforts you in anyway, my aunties cat went missing for five days when she moved into her new house and he got out. She was worried sick. She was out calling him & putting up posters to no avail. He strolled in on the fifth day through the open kitchen door looking unfazed and unharmed. She still has no idea where he was.

Floralnomad · 12/02/2023 02:17

On Monday ring round or go round all the vets in the area in case someone has picked her up , same with rescue centres . Hope she comes home soon
