Ragdoll rescue cat - what do I need?

59 replies

BearAusten · 04/02/2023 15:32

We have just been accepted to adopt a Ragdoll. First time owners.

I know that we need litter tray, beds/ scratch/standing posts, toys, but where to get and which ones are best? (Big issues Amazon at moment )

Also Ragdoll food…should be a good quality wet? Is specialised breed ones worth it or acceptable? Should I avoid anything? (Grain free needed )

Panic setting in. Rescue not really advising us on above.

Extra big heart. Armchair specially for cuddling. Cleaner, so you can spend more time cuddling. Etc.

caringcarer · 04/02/2023 15:42

My cats have 1 1/2wet food pouches morning and late evening with kibble available at lunch time. Most cats need 3 pouches a day. Big male cats might need a bit more. Always have water available. My 2 cats love the tall cat palace for playing in. They like the boxes and the cup shaped bowl they snooze in. The cat palace has bits for scratching on it too. They also have a separate scratching post. You'll need a litter tray and cat litter. Best get the deodorising sort of litter. Feeding bowls. Cats like shallow ones.

Good brushes to take out tangles and even an electric trimmer if the cats don't like brushing;

decent grainfree food;

a free arm for never ending petting;

a fishing pole with feathers to keep them active;

ear buds (to drown out the never ending miaows, honestly I thought ragdollls were supposed to be quiet cats...hah!).

BearAusten · 04/02/2023 15:56

Thank you.

caringcarer do you provide kibble for grazing at night or only at lunch?

Already got ear buds from listening to my ds play various instruments.

Good idea about electric trimmer Rheia. Thank you.

I provide kibble for my DCat at night otherwise she wakes us at 5.00 a.m! Have a lovely time with your rescue DCat.

Oh and something like this to get ragdoll hair out of the bedding, sofa, clothes etc. They shed an enormous amount of hair.

I've resigned myself to hair everywhere even though I bought a robot vacuum cleaner which whizzes around daily.

Kibble and water out all the time. Our 2 cats get 2 pouches between them each day. Then just relax and realise how lucky you are, rag dolls are GORGEOUS cats 🥰 you'll soon be whiling away hours cuddling with them, lucky you 💚💚💚

I would try to stick with the food they are currently on and then transition slowly later on once they are settled if you want to use another brand because switching can cause tummy upsets of done too quickly.

A extra large litter tray plus litter they are used to that is non-clumping. They need to be able to turn and cover their poo without standing in it.

A heavy duty cat tree that can take their weight.

I find grooming gloves useful as you can stroke them and get rid of excess hair at the same time. Mine hates being brushed so this works better for us.

Feliway plug in to help keep them calm and adjust to their new home.

Toys, da Bird type and crinkly shiny foil type for chasing are the favourites here. My boy has not got a great sense of smell so is not fussed by catnip, but valerian works ok for him.

Yes! But why are they so loud?! What is he trying to tell me when he wanders off to the other side of the house and wails his head off?!

Brush

Tower needs to have big platforms they are big cats

PuppyMonkey · 04/02/2023 16:54

Furminator

Mine is on IAMS now, just dry food - she's been fine with it for years but we struggled when she was a kitten, upset tummies galore.

Lots of Dreamies, obviously.

World's Best Cat Litter.

Good litter tray too. Mine occasionally goes outside in our garden but looks so nervous and uncomfortable it's quite hilarious. She's an indoor girl and proud.

What sort is she? We will require photographic evidence.

Yes we have a rag doll and she is big (2 now and seems to be still growing) so beds, carriers, scratching posts etc should all be on the large side. I am just about to change our cat flap for a bigger one as such a squeeze for her now. I did not consider any of these when she was a tiny kitten.

user1471518104 · 04/02/2023 17:00

Untamed wet cat food
Royal canin dry

Some really good cat trees on Amazon
2 or 3 good brushes

An air purifier for the dander if it gets
To you

Extra big heart is spot on, and is 99% of being a responsible pet owner. You’ll get to grips with the rest very quickly, don’t worry, as you learn to understand each other. Though I hate the term owner, because it makes them sound like a possession, when they’re a actually a much loved full member of the family. Or at least should be, if you’re doing it right.

BearAusten · 04/02/2023 17:35

Never thought about grooming gloves. Really good idea.

PuppyMonkey cat and Bengalcat Ragdoll are gorgeous.

Will post photos when I can. Getting her just over a week.

Congratulations OP, you’re going to have so much fun.
Ragdolls are very special cats, so laidback, loving & trusting.
Our beloved 18yr old Ragdoll girl died last year & left a big Raggie shaped hole in our cat family.
Our latest rescued Ragdoll, Bewlay, has been with us for two weeks & settled in straightaway, he was sitting on my knee purring as soon as we brought him home.
As I’m typing this he’s just climbed onto the arm of the sofa & flopped sidewards onto my knee 😊
What you’ll need apart from the basics, especially at first, is lots of time for sitting on the sofa cuddling & chatting to him.
You’ll spend a lot of time grooming, I find it very therapeutic.
A good hoover is essential & fluff removers for clothes.
When they’re shedding their winter coat we can see the fluff floating in the air & our grey carpet turns white 😄
Lots of toys, they say Ragdolls never grow up.
Enjoy your new best friend.

My girl cat is a very placid ragdoll and sits still on my lap so that I can brush the belly hair or even use the trimmer. My boy cat is a bit of a fighter but I can use the trimmer on his back leg tangles when he's all snoozy and tired around mid day.
