Please help - kitten won't stop chasing the dogs

I'm sorry this is long. Any advice appreciated!

We got a kitten two weeks ago. He's now 11 weeks old. We have two big dogs. I wanted a kitten because it was impossible to find a rescue adult cat that was used to dogs, and having had puppies I know how much easier it is to socialise babies than it is older animals.

I spent so much time researching how to introduce a kitten to dogs. We've spent the last two weeks being painstakingly careful and slow in our introductions (it's honestly been one of the most stressful things I've done). We started by keeping them in separate rooms and after a few days swapping them around so they could get used to each other's smell. Then we had the kitten in a crate and the dogs on leads, lots of treats and praise, kept the sessions very short (to keep it positive, but also because the kitten did not at all appreciate being in the crate!). Eventually we moved on to having the dogs on short leads while the kitten was free. The dogs were so good and relaxed and everything was looking positive.

The next step was supposed to be having the dogs loose also, but keeping the leads on so we could pick them up if anything seemed tense. This is where it all went pear shaped. Kitten saw the dangling leads and chased them, then didn't like how close he ended up to the dog attached to the lead and puffed up and swatted his face. Both of my dogs went from being relaxed and cool with the kitten to thinking this cat is a holy terror who will murder them at the first opportunity. :(

The dogs now get up and leave when kitten gets close. I'm okay with this, but the kitten seems to think he's a big man who's chased them off and he puffs up, squares off and then actually does chase them down. The dogs run in fear. He doesn't seem scared of them at all and I feel so sorry for my poor dogs, whose lives have been, as far as they're concerned, completely ruined by this tiny, vicious menace. They're both so stressed, and I'm worried one of them will literally snap if the kitten won't stop.

I don't know what to do. Will this get better with time and patience? How do you teach a kitten to stop? I can't use a spray bottle or one of those air spray things because it will punish the dogs too, and I'm trying to reward them for being calm near the kitten.

I should add I'm not subjecting the dogs to the kitten all day. They're still separated for most of the day and only around each other for a half hour to an hour at a time. Both cat and dogs have safe rooms that the other can't access, so they're not just mushed together!

Any insight at all would be so helpful, thank you.

It’s the kittens bed now.

Without a doubt. Unfortunately kitten has now also learned how to climb stairs (and the Christmas tree, sigh) so non-fearful dog can no longer take himself upstairs to escape. I don't think he's likely to snap given his behaviour but I need to spend the next few days focusing on him. He's much less food motivated than fearful dog and also more internal and sensitive (we call him emo boy at home) so he'll be a tough nut to crack in terms of getting him comfortable, but I'm not very worried about the kitten's safety around him thank goodness.

Kitten also seems to have doubled in both size and speed the last couple of days, so I'm feeling much less anxious in general. Hopefully a few more weeks will see everyone being more relaxed.

I love that kitten 😂

More pics please.

PaperDoves · 24/12/2022 13:08

I don't have a lot of pics of him menacing the dogs because both hands are usually on duty. 😂 But I do have shots of him in the Christmas tree and so many of him sleeping!

That would make a lovely Christmas card

Hopeyoursproutsarealreadyon · 24/12/2022 17:05

A genuine Christmas Angel imo!

taurussally · 24/12/2022 17:52

He's just gorgeous. Happy there's a bit of an amnesty.

PaperDoves · 24/12/2022 19:17

He's now worn himself out helping me wrap presents. Ribbons, cellotape and paper... what more could a kitten want.

Glad to hear there's a temporary truce.

This is my favourite thread of the year. What's the troublemakers name?

CatChant · 25/12/2022 01:14

Oh, what a pet! I wish he was under my Christmas tree.❤

SammyScrounge · 25/12/2022 02:00

The kitten is only playing.as he would if he were still with his siblings.

You might try keeping them together for a bit longer. The kitten will get dozy and probably snuggle up to one of the dogs.

DuchessDandelion · 25/12/2022 02:33

How have I only just seen this??

It's everything !

Keep doing what you're doing (including positing pics) and I'd socialise your emo boy with your holy terror through chill time and cuddles. Kitten on lap when calm and sleepy. Dog next to you. Love for both. Let them interact.

Feliway might also help calm kitten down a bit

SmartWatch · 25/12/2022 02:37

So. Cute. When. Asleep.

Hope he and the dogs all have a lovely Christmas day and continue to bond.

Frostydays · 25/12/2022 06:03

This is the type of thread that should be in Classics.

amylou8 · 25/12/2022 06:33

Your kitten is 😍 (so are your doggies but I'm a cat person). Don't worry the crazy kitten stage passes, only about 18 months of madness to go 😁🤣. Glad it's all going better and thanks for the thread, really made me smile.

PaperDoves · 25/12/2022 11:36

I don't know if it's Christmas magic or something more nefarious, but today fearful dog is obsessed with locating and ideally touching the kitten (only while the kitten's asleep, mind, he'd still prefer to not get in kitten's path while he's awake). So far he's laid his giant dog paws on kitten's belly, nibbled his tail a little and then laid his whole head next to him.

Hopefully he's being sweet and not realising kitten would make a tasty snack.

His name is Pantalaimon (after Lyra's daemon in His Dark Materials), Pan for short. We mostly call him Kitten Nugget though.

Your dog has come to pay homage to the new Overlord.

I think they'll be fine, the kitten knows he's the boss and the dogs know he'll be top dog.

ipreferthecat · 25/12/2022 12:15

I must admit I have a soft spot for the fearful dog as well

That's only because you haven't met emo dog yet! 😃 Here's a photo of him, hiding from the kitten behind a curtain.

@PaperDoves

I feel they could all be in a children's story book

catandcoffee · 25/12/2022 20:10

The latest photo is the funniest thing I've seen.
The kitten is so relaxed and sleeping on the dogs bed.
The poor dog laying on the floor and his eyes are looking at the kitten...😂

catandcoffee · 25/12/2022 20:18

Can we have updates every week please, or every day, with photos of bossy kitten and poor dogs 😍

Perfect name

And thanks for sharing more photos.
