Please help - kitten won't stop chasing the dogs

I'm sorry this is long. Any advice appreciated!

We got a kitten two weeks ago. He's now 11 weeks old. We have two big dogs. I wanted a kitten because it was impossible to find a rescue adult cat that was used to dogs, and having had puppies I know how much easier it is to socialise babies than it is older animals.

I spent so much time researching how to introduce a kitten to dogs. We've spent the last two weeks being painstakingly careful and slow in our introductions (it's honestly been one of the most stressful things I've done). We started by keeping them in separate rooms and after a few days swapping them around so they could get used to each other's smell. Then we had the kitten in a crate and the dogs on leads, lots of treats and praise, kept the sessions very short (to keep it positive, but also because the kitten did not at all appreciate being in the crate!). Eventually we moved on to having the dogs on short leads while the kitten was free. The dogs were so good and relaxed and everything was looking positive.

The next step was supposed to be having the dogs loose also, but keeping the leads on so we could pick them up if anything seemed tense. This is where it all went pear shaped. Kitten saw the dangling leads and chased them, then didn't like how close he ended up to the dog attached to the lead and puffed up and swatted his face. Both of my dogs went from being relaxed and cool with the kitten to thinking this cat is a holy terror who will murder them at the first opportunity. :(

The dogs now get up and leave when kitten gets close. I'm okay with this, but the kitten seems to think he's a big man who's chased them off and he puffs up, squares off and then actually does chase them down. The dogs run in fear. He doesn't seem scared of them at all and I feel so sorry for my poor dogs, whose lives have been, as far as they're concerned, completely ruined by this tiny, vicious menace. They're both so stressed, and I'm worried one of them will literally snap if the kitten won't stop.

I don't know what to do. Will this get better with time and patience? How do you teach a kitten to stop? I can't use a spray bottle or one of those air spray things because it will punish the dogs too, and I'm trying to reward them for being calm near the kitten.

I should add I'm not subjecting the dogs to the kitten all day. They're still separated for most of the day and only around each other for a half hour to an hour at a time. Both cat and dogs have safe rooms that the other can't access, so they're not just mushed together!

Any insight at all would be so helpful, thank you.

This has made my morning! And the proof picture 😂. Nothing helpful to add apart from a thanks!

Babamamananarama · 21/12/2022 09:37

Can you feed the kitten only in the presence of the dogs so that it associates the dogs being around with positive things happening? And visa-versa? Treat the dogs when kitten comes into view?

To be fair on the kitten, it's probably just trying to initiate play rather than chasing your dogs away. They are just big wusses.

At least you have dogs which are intelligent and trainable

FiveShelties · 21/12/2022 09:42

I had a kitten who would not let the dog upstairs. Used to sit at the top and the dog would not go past it.

After a couple of months they ended up as best mates - was funny though.

NellesVilla · 21/12/2022 09:51

Your poor doggles!

I’ve heard of this scenario many a time and it has always resolved itself eventually- but the cat is always in charge!

PaperDoves · 21/12/2022 09:51

@Babamamananarama I think that's exactly right - he's trying to play and the dogs are huge wusses (but justified in their minds!). I can't overemphasise how stressed I am about the situation. It sounds really cute and funny but a scared dog is more likely to bite, and this kitten has wormed his evil way into my heart and I would be devastated if anything happened to him!

I do have a photo of him commandeering the dog bed 😂

My dogs have accepted the cats, but they will not pass them on the stairs and the cats will definitely take over the prized spots on the sofa!
The kitten wants to play. Get another kitten! This will be more mortifying for your dogs but at least they may be hassled less!

Toddlerteaplease · 21/12/2022 09:55

If the dogs are on leads. Is that what the kitten is after?

Julen7 · 21/12/2022 10:12

I know no help at all but he is so sweet! 😻

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/12/2022 10:17

He looks like he’ll be a fluffy boy.

What’s their prey drive usually?

One dog has always borked at cats on walks, the other is afraid of actual feathers. I'm more worried about the fearful dog. The other one is just as scared but carries himself off elsewhere, while the fearful dog just wants to be near me, which keeps putting him in the kitten's way. I was training fearful dog on the floor this morning near the kitten when kitten tried to pounce his face again and I just pushed kitten away and shoved the entire bowl of treats under the dog's nose to reward him for not reacting. My methods may be unconventional but I'm doing the best I can!

Just to add, the leads were removed immediately after the fateful incident but the damage has been done. Kitten now thinks the dogs are great fun and the dogs do not agree. :(

How are things?

musicalfrog · 22/12/2022 11:21

I couldn't love this post more ❤️ cats rule! 😁

Obviously loving his new play mates. Give it 18 months or so and kitty will calm down a bit. They will be best friends.

Yy to more photos.

I think it'll be fine. It's good for the dogs to have the cat in charge 😁. As long as you keep an eye on them and they don't get cornered, I'd let them get on with it.

Be careful about food for rewards for the dog with the kitten nearby, if the dog is protective over the food, there's more likely to be an incident.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 22/12/2022 14:00

Oh my, those eyes. There is nothing innocent about that kitty!

minidriver41 · 22/12/2022 14:51

It sounds like you've done so much for them already, OP. You may just need to let them sort it out?

And in the meantime, please keep sharing photos because this is just so adorable, I am sure someone will suggest something more helpful

He's definitely got that gremlin vibe hasn't he 🥰

What a beautiful fluffy boy and that poor sweet doggie

HappyKoala56 · 22/12/2022 18:04

We had the opposite problem, our dog was obsessed with the kitten and never wanted to leave him alone! She was very affectionate and just wanted to mother him, but it was a bit much. With time it just calmed down naturally. Could you put up a baby gate between them so they can spend time being close but no-one gets hurt

CatChant · 22/12/2022 18:05

Ooh, he is beautiful! And the absolute spit of the naughtiest cat we’ve ever been privileged to live with.

He is nearly 10 and he still insists on playing the floor is lava, despite leaving a long, long trail of expensive destruction in his wake, howling like a banshee to be let out in the middle of the night, deliberately spiking people with very sharp claws when he wants food, and pouncing on and chasing away any cat smaller than him that he happens to encounter.

He is fluffy, cuddly, soppy and plain wicked. If he’d ever got the idea he could terrorise dogs there would be no holding him.

So, erm, good luck OP.

taurussally · 24/12/2022 11:10

How are they doing, OP? Any more photos. Hope you aren't worrying too much.

SmartWatch · 24/12/2022 11:21

Has the kitten been neutered yet? That might calm him down a bit? I have no experience of dogs but do have cats and they are complete nutcases for the first year or so, then they really calm down.

BlueKaftan · 24/12/2022 11:33

You might seek advice from a veterinarian as they can often have insights into behavioural issues.

I can't believe I posted this only four days ago - it feels like a lifetime! There are few dog problems that can't be solved with treats and time. The kitten won't eat anything that doesn't come out of a crinkly packet so I ended up discovering that dreamies are the most high value dog training treat in existence (what do they put in those things??). I've spent the last four days providing fearful dog with lots of exposure therapy and dreamies and it's been brilliant.

At one point kitten even helped with training by curling up in my lap and very gently swatting fearful dog's nose every time he took a treat. Roughly 50 dreamies later, fearful dog is chill with face swipes. 😃 He can cope with most kitten antics now, but he still gets very nervous when he sees the kitten square off and come right at him.

Here's the two of them having a little snooze together (well, kitten is having a snooze, fearful dog is hoping he'll get more dreamies soon). Note who's laid claim to the dog bed yet again!
