Cats sitting where you don’t want them to!

Is this a typical cat thing or just my cat… whenever we play a game or do a jigsaw or things like that she comes and sits right on top of it. She also tries to sit on my laptop keyboard when I’m working from home. It’s infuriating! I try and move her away but she really won’t get the hint and is very persistent. Can any cat psychology experts shed any light on this?

It’s just what they do. You get used to it.

HappyHamsters · 29/11/2022 19:51

She loves you

PortiasBiscuit · 29/11/2022 19:52

you need to learn your place.. why are you paying attention to anything that isn’t your cat?

Shouldbeworkingnotreadingtalk · 29/11/2022 20:05

Cats are genetically engineered to sit on jigsaws. You are being v v v unreasonable to expect otherwise ....and they love to play with Christmas decorations too ...

Yeah, cats go where they want. Sometimes they can be distracted with a box...

Google images of fake laptops for cats.

I'm a cleaner and this bugger will park itself on top of any surface I'm trying to clean and yowl menacingly. This is him (her?) guarding the sink.

Some cats just like being in their human's face!

The fact that it's winter probably makes a difference. If she's a cat that goes outside she'll spend less time around you in the summer. She probably wants to be with you because it's warm where you are.

Ludo19 · 29/11/2022 20:26

@ShitMumsClub that cat is gorgeous! Try speaking to it and it'll be your friend 😁

whiteroseredrose · 29/11/2022 20:30

Not sure if it would help but could you try reverse psychology? PUT your cat on your laptop or jigsaw. Your cat will want to defy you.

iklboo · 29/11/2022 20:34

@whiteroseredrose - oooh. Good plan. The furry buggers never want to go where YOU put them.

Yabu to not understand your dcat is telling you firmly they and only they require your attention...

I suspect this is the only way. They're furry little fuckers who like to flex their power just because they can.
Ours will arrive in the livingroom first, with the full selection of seats. She is free to pick the 'best' seat. It doesn't stop her an hour later, when you get up briefly to go to the loo/get a drink/take in a delivery etc, swiftly jumping out of her space the moment you've left the room to sit square in the middle of your seat. When you return she gives you a hard "Yeah, and? What are you going to do about it?" stare, followed but hissing and swipes if you dare to so much as appear to threaten to reclaim it. She does it because she can (although then unwittingly frees up the best space 😉).

You need an empty shoe box. In fact the answer to almost all cat-related issues is an empty box. Put the shoe box near the jigsaw/keyboard. If necessary pretend to be very interested in the inside of the box and then be a bit annoyed when the cat sits in it and blocks your view. Grin

Fremdschämen · 29/11/2022 20:59

It's what they do. Spread out a newspaper to read or a map or unroll a sheet of wrapping paper and they will plonk themselves down on it. Start changing a duvet cover and they'll jump up on the bed and plod all over it - or try to get inside it. We had one years ago that liked to curl up in the lid of a typewriter case. Find a shallow box about the size of your laptop and keep it next to the laptop while you're working, your cat might be persuaded to curl up in that, instead, especially if you only place the box on your desk when you have your laptop set up.

BlackAmericanoNoSugar · 29/11/2022 21:13

SkankingWombat you think you are a cat owner, in fact you are just the royal seat warmer. Grin

Ours just sat in front of the telly in the last ten minutes of the football

I love these replies! So it’s not just my cat 😂

Our cat used to sit on my computer desk to stop me working. I ignored him and worked around him so he upped the ante by pushing in the keyboard shelf so that I can’t type!

GimmeBiscuits · 29/11/2022 22:52

It's been a long time since I had a cat but what you describe is just standard catting. Mine used to sit on me just a few minutes before I needed to get up. Or on the jigsaw puzzle/newspaper/book that I was trying to utilise. Or walk across the keyboard whilst I was writing something because that way I'd be looking at them and not the screen.

largeprintagathachristie · 29/11/2022 22:58

Yep. Everything
Magnets for my lovely cat to “help” me with were:

  • the laptop keyboard
  • any WFH paperwork
  • me trying to read a newspaper (I’d get the sports section, which I didn’t want, out ready for her to crunch about in and curl up on in my lap, while I read the other sections over the top of her)
  • as previous posters have said, looking at a map or unrolling wrapping paper - cat would instantly sit and roll around unhelpfully
  • she was a menace around bed clothes being changed; would instantly come and try to control the whole thing, occasionally getting very cross

I miss her.

largeprintagathachristie · 29/11/2022 22:59

Mine could also create HTML when splatting across the keyboard

Mumdiva99 · 30/11/2022 05:54

One of my cats likes to steal the jigsaw piece and run off with it. She thinks it's hilarious. If she can roll on the jigsaw and kick it about first, so much the better!!
