Drinking fountains

Thinking of getting one of these for dcat. She is 16 and has kidney and heart problems, and the vet has put her on medicine to make her drink more. It’s working and she’s draining her water bowl pretty quickly.

So I’m thinking one of these new fangled cat water fountains might be a good idea. They hold more water than a simple bowl, and the water movement might be good encouragement.

Are they any good? Any particular recommendations? I’d rather not have more trailing wires but can’t seem to find any battery operated ones.

Mine loves his "fountain" but I can't recommend it as it's actually the neighbours water feature BlushHmm
He comes back in with wet paws from standing on his back legs drinking out of it, and moped when it broke until the neighbours bought him a new one

Davros · 29/11/2022 14:16

We've got one. Our diabetic 15 year old used to drink out of the tap and we all had to wait for her to finish if we were going out. She loves her fountain, it's just a Catit one from Amazon. Get extra filters too

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 14:18

Ha yes dcat does like to stick her snout in our garden pond in the summer. Not in the winter though - going outside is strictly for a ten second wee before returning sharpish to an indoor heat source.

Catit - thanks Davros

We have one but I don't think the cat has ever used it. I keep planning to put it on ebay. This is the one: www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B09PG9P3FR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 14:45

Ah, that’s the one I was just now looking at, Forlorn. I wonder if it’s unappealing to your cat somehow. Maybe I’ll give that model a swerve just in case.

I think she's just being a cat, to be honest. Contrary git. Grin

FolornLawn · 29/11/2022 14:52

It's a good one, I think, very quiet, small footprint on the counter. Easy to put together.

Nejnej2 · 29/11/2022 14:53

I think some cats just don't like them. We got one and she wasn't interested - much prefers drinking from human water glasses!

I'd definitely recommend trying a cheaper one to see whether your cat is interested - ours was less than £20!

Threadkillacilla · 29/11/2022 14:54

Mine have a solar one outside and a plug in indoor.
plug in is a cat it and about four years old. They all love it and filters are easy to get and change.

Threadkillacilla · 29/11/2022 14:55

Mine won't drink any water that's near their food though so it's across the kitchen. They are cats after all.

longtompot · 29/11/2022 14:57

We bought one for our cat as she likes to sit in the downstairs loo basin for a drink. She loves the fountain and hardly goes to the basin any more. We were very lucky as when we decided to get it a person was selling the fountain on Facebook marketplace and another person on there was selling the filters

We got this one www.amazon.co.uk/Catit-Original-Flower-Fountain-Window/dp/B0146QXOB0/ref=sr_1_21?c=ts&keywords=Drinking+Fountains+for+Cats&qid=1669733783&s=pet-supplies&sr=1-21&ts_id=471304031

I have a Catit fountain & DC loves to stick his paws in & play with it but he also does that with a bowl. He loves it & does drink out of it but prefers and old plant pot saucer in the garden

Ha ha love it!!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/11/2022 15:12

Mine love theirs. They definitely drink more. Also try a human glass or cup. Mine love that!

Toddlerteaplease · 29/11/2022 15:13

I've got a gator Pixie. But I preferred the cheaper one I got on Amazon. The water was cleaner, with those filters. But can't get it anymore.

She currently has a giant teacup and saucer. The saucer is essential because more water seems to go over the side than in her mouth!

Thanks for all the recommendations. I shall invest in one.

Kitty's Xmas gift?
Mine also likes to have a very full glass of water available

Mrsfussypants1 · 29/11/2022 17:52

We had the standard catit fountain, updated to the flower one which dcats wouldn't touch and we're currently using and loving the new catit pixie fountain with stainless steel lid. Also has a light that indicates water level, which I don't expect to last but they love it and it's been the easiest to clean of all the ones we've had. Comes in 3 versions: standard plastic top in 4 different colour ways, for a few pound more is the stainless steel top one, then there's a uv steriliser one which you can connect to an app for almost double the price. Mine do drink a lot of water from it, definitely a good buy. They usually give any new device the cold shoulder for a week at first.

Ludo19 · 29/11/2022 20:29

I've got two petsafe Avalon fountains. Easier to clean because they're ceramic. I also have an accessible glass of water too.

Catit Flower Drinking Fountain... www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07KYXFJQ2?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

This is the one we have and the cats love it!

bellac11 · 29/11/2022 21:10

We are on our second one. Its ceramic. The first one was plastic. The plastic one just got too gunky with limescale, difficult to clean because of the wire

Binned that one, bought a nicer looking ceramic one. Same problem

Cat hasnt looked at it once. Not once. OH likes the idea of them but I just want to chuck it out. Looks ugly and the noise gets on my nerves.

Elieza · 29/11/2022 21:36

I got the Aldi one. It worked fine. But as expected DCat refused to use it, preferring be to put the tap on instead.

VeryQuaintIrene · 29/11/2022 21:40

One of my cats absolutely loved it, but then we acquired a teenage tabby who delighted in vandalizing it and we'd come home to find the kitchen covered in water and dismantled fountain, so poor elder cat was deprived of his pleasure. Agree about the plastic ones getting dunked up.

VenusClapTrap · 29/11/2022 21:51

Hmm quite a few cats refusing to touch them. I feared as much. I can imagine her being horrified by the plastic flower ones - “I’m not a kindergarten kitten! Return the tea cup!”

She is more dowager duchess than fun young thing and definitely has ideas about aesthetics. Will only sit on velvet cushions etc etc.

I'm not enthused about spending too much on something she may well reject though.
