Drinking fountains

Thinking of getting one of these for dcat. She is 16 and has kidney and heart problems, and the vet has put her on medicine to make her drink more. It’s working and she’s draining her water bowl pretty quickly.

So I’m thinking one of these new fangled cat water fountains might be a good idea. They hold more water than a simple bowl, and the water movement might be good encouragement.

Are they any good? Any particular recommendations? I’d rather not have more trailing wires but can’t seem to find any battery operated ones.

Mine would only drink water on the stairs a long way away from their food and litter tray

fancy fountain wouldn’t look at it. Neighbours dodgy puddle, loved it

I've got the flower fountain, gifted from my sister as her cat refused to use - not her preferred type
My cat also refuses to use it - cat solidarity !

We have one but can’t use it as he just gets in, splashes around and tips the whole lot up. It’s a nightmare!

We got the flower one for Basil when he had a urinary problem. Inevitably he almost never touches it but at least his sister does drink from it all the time. Our other two have never drunk from it at all.
Photo to prove that at least one cat is prepared to drink from one of these.

That's our one. Mewler loves it

I’ve gone through a few different ones. Make sure you get lots of filters and change regularly as that can cause it to stop working. Also make sure it doesn’t run low on water.

One of mine had a colour change where the light went red when the water level was low or the filter needed changing. I only had to get a new one as they stopped doing the right size filters.

Currently got a flower one with a metal tray which is good. I keep it on a plate in case of spillages!

One cat prefers the water just bubbling up rather than trickling down from the flower, but she also prefers to drink from a bowl so I offer both. Definitely makes the other cat drink more, as he hates bowls. Likes our water glasses of course 🙄

Ours will only drink out of pottery bowls. Indoors or in the catio. They prefer the outside old pottery dog bowl with tap water and whatever debris blows in to it. Th inside one is also tap water - but changed twice a day so it’s clean.
cats are contrary.

Mine use the cat mate one and seem to like it. They usually drink from the top where the water comes out rather than the bowl part. It's not the most attractive looking thing but it's out the way in a quiet corner which I think the cats like.

Gorgeous kitty! He does manage to make it look like the flower is in his way though! 😂

Here is my old lady with her current arrangement. The garden view is required, bone china preferred.

Our Dcat wouldn’t drink from the expensive cat fountain I impulse bought for her!

We went back to the old bowl she was refusing to drink from and she started drinking from the bloody thing😹😹

Cat fountain is in a box while I ponder what to do with it. I had a weak moment after DH had emergency surgery and spent £70 on a Wi-Fi enabled cat fountain😵‍💫 If you do get one, go for a cheap one.

VenusClapTrap · 30/11/2022 21:14

Oh blimey. That’s an expensive mistake! I feel your pain though. We have a ‘smart’ cat flap that was ridiculously pricey - she still yowls for us to open the door. 🙄

It was a moment of madness for sure🤪🤣 I’d resisted for a year as well, the stress of DH having emergency surgery just sent me slightly loopy! He’s fine now and my senses have returned🤣

I did spend £14 on a cardboard scratcher in a cardboard box as well which might be the most expensive cardboard ever but Dcat adores it. Her 2 favorite things are cardboard scratchers and cardboard boxes so combining the 2 things was money well spent, she is in it most of the day and night.

Neilsfavouritechilli · 01/12/2022 19:48

Watching with interest. I suspect mine won't use one so I'll probably try a cheap one first.

We've had 2 catit ones. They both love them to drink from but they mostly loved them to play with - splash, tip over, pull apart, generally destroy to bresking point. One lasted a couple of months but the flower one literally 24 hours.
