New kitten covered in fleas!!!

Just a rant really. We just bought a kitten yesterday. The owner said the she hadn't given him his flea treatment when I asked as she said she was letting us decide what we wanted to treat our kitten with. She said the kitten was only 2 days late off next due dose so should be fine. I kid you not we cuddled the kitten and she did not scratch once the entire times we visited.

So now fast forward to today and kitten is non stop scratching and ca visibly see the fleas running across her head and chin. I'm so devastated and fuming. The lady seemed so sincere about her cats and their welfare of them. I've had a flea infestation before and have a baby as well. It was a nightmare and we got bitten to a pulp. I also feel so sorry for the kitten as she is tiny and must be super uncomfortable with these giant fleas on her.

Tomorrow I will be onto the vets first thing but I'm just so angry that someone would charge hundreds for a kitten that comes infested and knowingly sells them on anyways. In todays day and age can clearly expect no less but still. Feel cheated of money but glad the kitten is in now responsible hands.

You say you had an infestation before, do you have other pets that could of passed them to the kitten?
Also flee larva can lay dormant for years in cracks of wood like skirting boards etc, you might be just unlucky.

Some peoples comments are really quite judgy & unkind.

It would be worth registering your kitten with the vet just to get it checked over.

Fleas are not the end of the world, all animals get them, as long as you treat them they will prevent them

HappyHamsters · 27/11/2022 17:57

I would call the ooh vet for advice

Wishuponastar5 · 27/11/2022 17:59

@CoffeandTiaMaria Kitten is 5 months so not separated too early

I'd have Washed kitten and then put the treatment on after a few hours.

What age is it?

@Regularsizedrudy sorry where do people buy animals then? Pet shops are just as bad. I don't see the issue buying from this lady, the mother cat was neutered promptly after

Cat's Protection or any other good rescue.

medicatedgift · 27/11/2022 18:01

If it's 5 months why the hell haven't you gone to Tesco or similar today and got frontline ffs.

And a flea spray for your house.

willstarttomorrow · 27/11/2022 18:01

@Wishuponastar5- if you foster and work in a cat sanctuary, fleas really should not be an issue. Treat the kitten and your home- in the whole scheme of cat ownership this is not a huge deal

medicatedgift · 27/11/2022 18:02

If you foster and work in cat sanctuary, why the fuck did you buy a kitten?

BringOnAutumn · 27/11/2022 18:03

I can't believe you were a fosterer and then didn’t get a rescue kitten 😒

From a rescue centre.

Or like I did. Due to my working hours I wasn't able to adopt a kitten but instead was suited to a pair of 1 year olds who had a horrid start to life.

Apparently they had markings which the rescue centre said they were unlikely to be sold. They were left in a box by the centre in the freezing cold. God knows what happened to their poor mother when she had finished serving her purpose.

I would never go to a private breeder.

CrunchyCarrot · 27/11/2022 18:04

I hope you have a flea comb, OP. Get a glass of water and comb the little buggers off, drown them in the water. It is a chore but well worth doing. Poor little mite! Fleas are nasty for a kitten.

2022again · 27/11/2022 18:06

people are being judgy because if you work in a cat sanctuary you should know not to buy kittens off the internet on pets4homes....how do you know "the mum was neutered straight after"????!!! If it's not a pedigree and you are buying a regular moggy off the internet then this is someone after a fast buck and you end up paying well over the odds and risk having to fork out in vet bills for a poorly kitten.

This. Surely you could have kept one of the cats you fostered?

GAH3 · 27/11/2022 18:07

You know you are part of the problem don't you?

This.

@HappyHamsters owned cats all my life. Work in a cat sanctuary. I know how to handle fleas. I just hate them. With a burning passion. Kitten is lively eating/drinking okay. I have a flea wash but was also told ages ago that washing can strip the oils so the flea treatment doesn't work as well when placed on the skin. Could be a bunch of rubbish but I don't know whether just to try and stick it out till tomorrow

You worked in a cat sanctuary?! Ok

tabulahrasa · 27/11/2022 18:10

You work in a cat sanctuary and bought a kitten from a dodgy backyard breeder you found on pets4homes of all places?

Really?

Wishuponastar5 · 27/11/2022 18:13

Really didn't ask for anyone's two pence on my decisions on my life. I'm happy with the kitten I have and you can bash me all I want I'm not neglecting the kitten.

Yes I worked for a sanctuary but I wasn't allowed to adopt a kitten. I didn't want to keep my older Foster cats as I wanted a kitten that would grow up with my baby.

Not that I need to justify anything to anyone

Wishuponastar5 · 27/11/2022 18:14

@ILoveToads yes I did and I helped rehome plenty of cats and dedicated all of my time to my baby and the sanctuary so I am allowed to do this for myself thanks!

Well you're a peach.

Wishuponastar5 · 27/11/2022 18:18

@medicatedgift right back at your dear!

OP posts:
Wolfiefan · 27/11/2022 18:20

That’s the problem though. You’re doing it for yourself and being totally selfish. Never mind the kitten and baby you’re putting at risk. There’s a reason rescues don’t rehome tiny kittens to homes with babies.
You could have waited but instead you went to this greeder who sees these animals as a way to make money.

medicatedgift · 27/11/2022 18:28

So you gave away cats.

You were not suitable for a kitten at the sanctuary you work at

But you wanted a kitten to grow up with your baby

So you paid a bomb to a backyard breeder and got one with fleas.

That you still haven't treated despite the shops being open all day. And there being, you know, emergency vets.

You work at a sanctuary and you don't recognise a flea ridden sick kitten when you see it? Bollocks.

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 27/11/2022 18:58

Regularsizedrudy · 27/11/2022 17:43

Don’t buy kittens off the internet. You’ve fed into the suffering of future litters

THIS. Kittens should be with their mum until 12 weeks of age. Why BUY a kitten when there are lots in shelters (which have been treated for worms, and fleas, and have been microchipped)?
