Diagnose my kitten 4 months, dreadul diorheah all the time

So when we got her she seemed to poo normally.

Seemed sloppy but could form a shape.

It got worse and worse and eventually splatter diorheah.
Vet gave us a probiotic thing to soothe which didn't work.
Then gave us anti biotics which seemed to work instantly, but then we are back after week to splatter diorheah.

A sample has been sent to the vet but any idea what it could be?

What food is she eating?
Might need to change it if it contains cereal/grains
Hopefully the sample gives more info

dementedpixie · 16/10/2022 18:55

Giardia is another possibility

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 16/10/2022 19:33

We messed up when we got her and changed her food.
Funny enough we did sooo much research before we got her but nothing stressed that you do not under any circumstances change their food!!
I couldn't believe it!

You can change food but you would do it gradually over the period of a couple of weeks.

MrsMoggy · 16/10/2022 20:03

We had this when we got one of our cats at 12 weeks old, poo would literally just fall out of her when she moved from place to place, it got everywhere! Took her to vets several times for different antibiotics etc, eventually it just stopped. She’s 4 now and never had the same issue since it was very bizarre. She has been the only cat we’ve had who ever had worms though so whether it’s linked to that maybe.

DrDetriment · 16/10/2022 20:05

I had this with my rescue cat. Turned out she was massively intolerant to grains. I swapped to a whole meat diet and it improved a lot. She still has some stress related colitis but the probiotics help with this. Just to check, you aren't giving her cow's milk are you?

powershowerforanhour · 16/10/2022 20:08

Tritrichomonas foetus?
Giardia?
Dietary intolerance?
Who knows??
Let your vet do their thing. Diarrhoea in young cats is a pain but you have to work your way through the diagnostic process.

Suzi888 · 16/10/2022 20:12

I would say allergy test or put kitten on the food she originally had.

If you don’t have insurance, get it. On an entirely unrelated note my friends cat had a few teeth which needed to be removed, there were complications and £8k later all is well….

Ticksallboxes · 16/10/2022 20:24

Our first cat had bad diarrhoea when we first got him. He was being fed Felix kitten food so we consulted an independent pet store who recommended The Cheshire Cat's Garden wet food for kittens and Canagans dry food, both of which have a meat content of about 80%.

As soon as he started eating it his diarrhoea stopped. I've never heard of not changing their food, so I would immediately try one with a higher meat content. Most supermarket cat food is only about 4% meat and mostly made up of cereals.

dementedpixie · 16/10/2022 20:40

Supermarket wet cat food is not only 4% meat. It may have 4% named meat e.g. chicken, beef, etc but will also contain mixed meat and animal derivatives where the actual origin is not specified. Do watch out for added cereals/grains though

Same with dry food. You want meat to be the 1st ingredient rather than cereal

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 16/10/2022 22:02

Thanks will look into that.

Re worm's she's been wormed a few different wormers, tablet from vet and the flea stuff also gets worm's?

She's having iams at the moment...with a teeny bit of sensitive royal canin.

Some kittens at the rescue I support had untreatable diarrhoea until they were diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection from their mother. It soon cleared up with the correct unusual antibiotic. It may have been Tritrichomonas foetus as suggested by a PP

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 16/10/2022 23:19

@Shouldbedoing .. thanks!

Would this be diagnosed by the poo sample?

Vet appointment in the morning. Hope kitty is ok

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 16/10/2022 23:23

I've just read up about the t fetous and there were lots of cat's where she came from so I wonder if it's what!

OP posts:
Toddlerteaplease · 16/10/2022 23:28

Also came on here to say Giardia

Snowinsummer · 16/10/2022 23:33

TRITRICHOMONAS FOETUS
Ours had that - vet didn't want to test for it as apparently it is really unusual. It actually took 2 courses to clear it up and he had a sensitive stomach for a year or so afterwards but eventually could eat anything.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 17/10/2022 06:46

@Snowinsummer poor little mite!

What did he eat when had sensitive stomachs?

OP posts:
Sundayisworst · 17/10/2022 06:57

Mine was massively allergic to vaccines. I spent a lot of money and he suffered for years because of it.

Shouldbedoing · 17/10/2022 07:24

@TheHouseonHauntedHill Yes it was diagnosed by testing but only after they tried everything else.

TheHouseonHauntedHill · 17/10/2022 10:04

Thanks, I've asked vet's if they can also test for this.

They are doing a general poo screen plus Giardia.

Don't give her any processed cat food only chicken, mix with rice or wee bit potato, some sliced ham sliced been etc, even cheaper stuff like chicken roll etc, stop all gravies, jelly etc. give her
Little and often. Only water to drink. Take her back enough to empty her bowel and keep this diet for a good week or so, then slowly start introducing tiny bits of cat food, and I mean really good brand, not gravies, and only kitten food. If she starts pooing again bad ull know she is intolerant and u cannot give her processed food at all.
This is my cat what I had to do, and it's totally worked. I stopped my kitten having worst tummy pain sore bums, please persevere with the sweetie, she will thank u so much for it x

DrDetriment · 17/10/2022 15:58

@crazeekat I'm sorry but some of this is terrible advice. Never mix your cat's food with rice or potato. They are obligate carnivore and only need meat. Grains and veg are awful for their digestion, especially if the kitten has a dodgy tum.

Katapolts · 17/10/2022 16:03

I'd try giving her just boiled chicken for a little while, and look at switching to a grain-free food. Lots of cats just can't tolerate the wheat in food like Iams or Royal Canin.

I had similar with my cat as a kitten - she was treated for Giardia in the end, and we only give wheat-free food.

Hardy Terrible, huge exaggeration. I have been told to do this for years by every vet I've ever spoken to. Cats do eat it and will not harm them in the slightest, and keeps their proteins when they are already Losing important nutrients. It completely helps, and is only fora very short term time. Of course cats need other nutrients, duh, this is a way to help their already sore tummies from other foods, so please read properly. There are many reasons a cat can be unwell, I am suggesting eliminating processed cat food do u really think a tiny amount of rice and potatoes are worse than shit processed food out a pouch? . But of course all my vets must be wrong, and my cats must be faking when they get better when I give them this. Seriously.
