Advice on how to reduce the number of cats in my life?

We've always had a cat and I wouldn't be without one. But several years ago a pregnant (autocorrect went with legendary!) queen arrived in the garden. Naturally, we took her in and in due course she had a litter of six beautiful kittens.

Our cat was old so we decided to keep a pair of kittens (our cat tolerated them quite well) and found homes for the others. I got the mother cat spayed and expected her to move on because she was very nervous and semi feral.

Long story short, two kittens were returned to us when a friend emigrated, one kitten was rehomed locally and found her way back to us and moved himself in. The mother cat bonded with our old cat and settled in for the long term. Then my sweet old gentleman cat died aged 18.

So the total number I'm feeding is six. I'm fond of each of them and their adorable personalities but it's more than I ever intended to care for. They are all chipped, neutered and vaccinated, that's not the problem, just the sheer quantity is too high. I'd love to just have the pair that I chose originally.

These are adult, independent cats. I feel sure that if I rehomed them anywhere in my area they'd find their way home. They would need to find a better situation than they are in now before I'd let them go. Lastly, they are tame and respond to us but they (all but one) are very nervous of other humans and are not well behaved lap cats.

Do I have to make peace with being a 6 cat parent or is there another way to solve this??

I thought you were going to say you had 50, or something! One summer, we had 8, which was definitely too many, but we had 6 for a long time, all middle aged black ones who were unwanted elsewhere. And yes, it's expensive if you take proper care of them, and I always felt that I wasn't giving enough attention to all of them. We are now down to 5 and I have to exercise a lot of self-discipline not to add another...

There are so many cats in rescues around here that are being fostered and are homeless it seems wrong to add mine to the list. Also, I worry that they'd never settle in a new home because of their feral background and unfamiliarity with people.

Here's a pic of two of them packed up and ready to go

They’re definitely going ti return and murder you dead if you try to rehome them.
yours for life i’m afraid

We have 3 cats right now and that feels like a lot.

There always seems to be one we haven't seen in a while so I'm always mildly concerned that one is missing. They always come back (so far). They look quite similar and I find it hard to keep track of how much each one has eaten. I'm sure there is one eating all the food. They're costing me a fortune. Plus the cost of vet bills, annual vaccinations.

I always seem to be tripping over one or looking for them to make sure they're not in bedrooms overnight because then they start meowing in the middle of the night. I can't keep them in a particular room because it's too hard to keep track of where they are when someone wants to open the door.

Two of ours are quite elderly though so we might be a 1 cat household before too long and then we'll be sad.

I couldn't deal with 6 op, you're legendary.

There’s a Facebook group called Feral and Farm Cats UK. Might be worth posting on there for advice?

Thanks for all your ideas, lots to think about and really helpful.
Thanks for the cat compliments too. I'll pass them on. They aren't always so photogenic though
