Fleas

Right removed all bedding currently on a 60 wash, all soft furnishings sprayed or bagged waiting to be washed. Indorexed THE WHOLE HOUSE. Flea treated the cats with advantage closest thing I could get thanks to the delays with Royal Mail.

I've hoovered every single nook and cranny I could find and emptied the Hoover outside each time.
So what now? I'm keen to treat this as our new baby is due soon and we need to start building the cot up etc. what else can I do??
Cats are also scratching like crazy now is this because the treatment is working? Usually my husband does it whilst I'm away so I don't see what they are actually like with it on!. Thanks

You do it all again in 10 days time, you keep repeating until no fleas. You also treat your cats religiously once per month.

PaisleyP · 03/10/2022 16:07

@PortiasBiscuit We have but clearly it didn't work. I will look for someone to come and do it for me. No way am I doing this again so soon!

Do it all again in 20 days, do t be alarmed if you still see some they will go. I have to say Advantage is crap and we had fleas all the time, we switched to Bravecto and that worked a treat.

Get a flea comb and comb the cats, that works well.

PaisleyP · 03/10/2022 16:34

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor That's the one I wanted but couldn't get hold off!
I've just combed out quite a lot, so I'm hopeful I've done enough. Off to get some dreamies now as I think I'm in the dog house.

I think that the fleas do have a last hurrah and bite like mad as they die. The cats scratch a lot a day or two after treatment..

PaisleyP · 04/10/2022 08:16

So found quite a few dead ones on the sofa this morning! Will re Hoover the whole house in a minute and I've also been bitten on my leg in the night not great is it Sad

Don't hoover for a couple of days, let the Indorex work it's magic. Don't mop hard floors either. Remember to spray into your hoover bag so any live ones get killed off.

PaisleyP · 04/10/2022 08:34

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor done that we've got the shark so I've just been emptying the canister every time but have sprayed that all out. Really hoping this is it. What a nightmare fleas are.

How many cats do you have as sounds like the poor things have had fleas a while. Remember curtains also can you keep them downstairs or something just so you can stop them spreading anymore if heavily pregnant. It will take a couple of weeks but your get their. Spray inside wardrobes, mattress, shoe cupboard literally everywhere

PaisleyP · 04/10/2022 08:49

We've got 2 but the stuff we was using seems to of no longer been strong enough or something as we've had them for years and never had this. On the plus side I have noticed that the girl cat has stopped scratching like crazy now and I actually haven't seen her scratch yet. Will give her another comb later and see what I find. Not keen on that part, they make me feel very squeamish!

Hi so we've been keeping up with the hoovering, washing every thing etc. still been combing the cats. Big one is fine but the fluffy one had 2 baby sort of dying fleas on her coat today is this normal?

Feel all icky again. They aren't due more treatment for another 2-3 weeks I think? Says on the box every 4 weeks. Have also got flea collars on them now.

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/10/2022 23:18

Totally normal. It's all a process, keep going ,they'll be gone soon. I don't think they should have flea collars AND spot on!!

PaisleyP · 14/10/2022 20:35

Can't deal with this any more I really can't. Found another 3 baby fleas on the cat today. I'm hoovering every inch of the house daily and it's still happening. My baby is due soon and the kids have been bit again I feel like just rehoming them. It would break my heart but I can't cope with this. I honestly wish I never got them now and I'm a massive cat lover but it's never been this bad 😭

Have you treated the cats with prescription flea stuff from the vets as frankly anything you can buy over the counter is going to be limited in it’s effectiveness. Going forward I would get the cats to the vet for a flea injection ( I think it’s called Program) which lasts 6 months and basically it sterilises lady fleas so you hopefully won’t get this issue again .

Polarbear5 · 15/10/2022 15:09

We experienced this and you have my hugest sympathies, fleas in the house and trying to get rid of them is the most exhausting and soul destroying thing ever. Despite prescription flea drops, our cat seemed to still be somehow getting it off.

In sheer desperation, I asked the vet to explore another type of treatment and our cat has been on credelio tablets for almost a year now. And we’ve not seen fleas since. Takes a bit of practice administering them, but more than worth it.

FannyIsNotMyAunt · 15/10/2022 15:20

I think you can get an injection for the cat which makes the female fleas infertile, so the life cycle is broken, might be worth asking your vet.

That is how most flea spot on treatments work I think.

Baby fleas: ok, these would be freshly hatched from somewhere (some area you couldn't vacuum), seeing a flea isn't end of world, they just haven't been on the cat long enough to die.

Nothing safe to have in your home kills flea eggs and the eggs can hatch months after being laid, so it takes a while to get rid. An excellent vacuum cleaner helps.

How long have you had the cats? Before 3 October, when were the cats last treated and with what?

Regularsizedrudy · 15/10/2022 16:36

Get a proper prescription from the vet. They will give you a dose based on your cats weight so will be much more effective

Indorex spray will stop eggs developing.

PaisleyP · 15/10/2022 17:42

We've done indorex and I think it was bravecto they was treated with. It seems like since we went away for a holiday it's all kicked off. I'm wondering if my brother has let a stay in for feeding, as there's so many that come into the garden? They aren't young cats and always been ok so god knows what's happened. Sad

My son has 4 fresh bites I can't deal with this anymore. What else can I do?

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/10/2022 17:38

Spray with Indorex again. They won't go immediately but they're have a last hoorah. Good news is it'll be too cold for them soon and they'll die off anyway.

PaisleyP · 18/10/2022 17:40

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor are you sure? I've read that the heating will keep them comfy. I feel gutted and just so stressed out with it all. I desperately need to wash my carpets also so spraying again will be a good idea just an absolute nightmare it's like they are immune to what we are doing

OP posts:
MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 18/10/2022 18:49

Indorex takes time to work it won't kill them immediately.
