Do you give your cat wet and dry food?

It's been a decade since I owned a cat so I can't remember what I did with my last cat.

Ive spoken to a few people who seem to only give their cat dry food.

Is that normal? Our cat is 11 months old and still quite likes both.

Do people choose dry food only because of their preference or the cats?

We leave dry done 24/7 as have several cats and give wet food as a treat

FuoriComeUnBalcone · 15/07/2022 20:33

I leave dry food out all the time and give wet food various times throughout the day. If there's only dry food out he miaows as if he's dying of hunger!

cavingandclimbing · 15/07/2022 20:34

We leave dry available all the time plus half a pouch of wet morning and evening.

ImFuminHun · 15/07/2022 20:36

Ok that's exactly what I do as well.

Thank you.

We leave dry down all day but our 2 cats share a pouch or wet food in the morning as a sort of "treat" for breakfast

hilariousnamehere · 15/07/2022 20:37

Dry goes down in the morning and they can graze till next morning, wet food is for dinner :) my vet is quite keen on them having just dry because it's apparently good for their teeth, but they love the wet so I've kept a pouch a day between them.

Mind you, their biscuits are like a kitty bento box - they each have three different types 😂

We do the same

Annfr · 15/07/2022 20:38

Oh this thread was a surprise, I wasn't expecting to do the same as most people haha!

stillherenow · 15/07/2022 20:39

Give wet as they are really prone to kidney issues. I used to add water to it as well

Yep, that's exactly what we do a well.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/07/2022 20:41

DCat has 2 pouches per day on demand. Then a small bowl of biscuits for nighttime grazing. He also eats various wildlife to supplement the meagre offerings at the Dobby household and goes to NDN with his begging bowl out.

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/07/2022 20:42

Dry all day and a wet pouch for dinner here (we find putting it down in the morning in summer attracts flies).

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 15/07/2022 20:47

We usually do half a pouch of wet morning and night, then a small portion of biscuits twice a day. In the last few weeks while it’s been warmer she’s not been as keen on the biscuits, and since she is bad at drinking water, we’ve been doing two pouches of wet split over four meals. This week I have been adding a little water to it too.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 15/07/2022 20:49

Dry food is topped up in the morning and 'wet' 🤢 is given at teatime (so well before we have dinner)

Sunshineandflipflops · 15/07/2022 20:50

Dry out all of the time and wet twice a day (a pouch each time). She doesn’t always eat the wet though so I don’t give her a second if she hasn’t eaten the first.

anderosonnmj · 15/07/2022 20:52

A combination of wet and dry. Plus whatever they manage to catch on the balcony or in the basement. 100% dry is bad for their kidneys. Cat 2, who doesn't drink much water, gets a little dish of chicken broth if it's very hot.

MrszClaus · 15/07/2022 20:54

Dry all day, half a pouch in the morning and sometimes throughout the day - then a wet pouch each in the evening. Along with crazy amounts of fancy treats, fish fillets etc etc

Tubbyinthehottub · 15/07/2022 20:57

Mine eats raw for breakfast and dinner. He has a few biscuits at lunch but only really because the dog gets lunch. He eats biscuits when we are away (also has a cat feeder visit once per day to feed wet). I wouldn't want him to eat dry all the time because of potential bladder/kidney issues, which are common in cats, especially males. I believe it's important for a cat to have food that contains moisture.

PeloAddict · 15/07/2022 20:57

Mine has dry down all the time which he claims he can't eat as "only got one TOOF mama"
Doesn't stop him crunching raw chicken bones!
Wet food is 95% of his diet

We do the same

Same

AnnaMagnani · 15/07/2022 20:59

We have swapped to wet twice a day as:

  1. Silkycat has bladder issues and it upped her fluid intake
  2. Desert boy was going next door every morning to fight their cat for Whiskas. Since providing his own wet food this has stopped.
Have generally found that dry food on demand has been a short cut to chonky for a lot of my cats. Silkycat would definitely think it was a chance to eat herself into oblivion. Desert boy can self regulate so gets dry food in a microchip feeder. Poor Silkycat now only gets a small amount of dry which she inhales.
easyday · 15/07/2022 21:01

Wet food at breakfast (6-7ish) and again at 5pm. Dry food available most of the time.

A wet pouch 3 times a day and a small amount of dry morning and evening. He will eat everything that is put out at once so we have to space it out. He has no concept of grazing!

RockinHorseShit · 15/07/2022 21:03

Dry available 24/7 & a couple of small pouches each
