Do you give your cat wet and dry food?

It's been a decade since I owned a cat so I can't remember what I did with my last cat.

Ive spoken to a few people who seem to only give their cat dry food.

Is that normal? Our cat is 11 months old and still quite likes both.

Do people choose dry food only because of their preference or the cats?

pouch on the morning, pouch in the evening then biscuits before bed... same as my parents (back in the days of tins) did so just learned from them.

With an all dry food diet you do need to be slightly careful with some brands if it's a sterilised cat as the mineral content can cause blockages which can be very quickly fatal

Dry available at all times (often eaten at 3am...)

One wet pouch in the morning and one in the evening (just before our breakfast and dinner to attempt to reduce begging). He doesn't drink much water so I add a fair bit to the pouches and he laps it down.

We have two wee madams. Dry food down all day, a pouch each early morning and early evening.

Wow everyone gives a lot of pouches! Our girl get dry all the time and one pouch a week. She knows the word 'pouch' and can be bribed with it if we can't find her, so we keep it as a special treat! She is tiny though and eats a lot of local wildlife.

We've changed throughout their lives! At first I was told only dry (by breeder). Then we had loads of urinary issues (UTIs). Because cats generally don't drink enough, they get moisture from wet food. I was also told dry food just isn't very digestible for cats (in the wild they have wet meat, blood). So we switched to wet only. Then their teeth started to suffer. Vet advised some dry food to help clean their teeth. Then one keeps having issues (vomiting) so he's now on a dry-only prescription diet for sensitive bellies, while the other has a mix of wet and dry😑

I leave out dry food and give Dcat a small amount of wet food daily. She gobbles it.

GoAround · 15/07/2022 21:19

You need both. Wet for hydration, dry for teeth. We have a 24 hour dry buffet on offer whilst pouch is served morning and evening.

Dry and wet. I was told that if you don't give wet, they are in danger of getting kidney failure because of dehydration.

Isaidnoalready · 15/07/2022 21:21

Mine gets cystitis so I've had to transition them onto wet so they have a pouch split between them three times a day followed by a small amount of biscuits one cat has slimmed down the other not so much 😂

Dry food for my cat. Firstly he is fussy so would only entertain meat in gravy pouches and even then he would like the gravy and leave the meat. Secondly he likes to graze then come back repeatedly so dry food is better to leave down for longer

MrsMoastyToasty · 15/07/2022 21:42

We give 50/50 wet and dry food for our 2 cats.
(However it is always WRONG according to Toasty Boy Cat).

QueSyrahSyrah · 15/07/2022 22:00

To add, SyrahCat's pouches have been in the fridge this week, which seems to be encouraging him to eat them (he's a picky eater when it's warm).

Ours was dry only with her first owners but she has a small tin of gourmet every day now. She definitely knows what human food is though and will not leave you alone if there’s cooked meat around.

She eats her biscuits overnight which wakes me up. I feed Arden grange <sotto voice> light biscuits. For the indoor cat.

It seems most of us do the same , I also give half a pouch of wet in the early morning and evening and have dry out to snack on all day .
though in this weather even if he hasn't eaten all his wet food it gets put back in the cupboard away from the flies and its a bit cooler in there

DontKeepTheFaith · 16/07/2022 21:15

Dry food always available, 2 pouches or tiny tins as is her current preference, one morning and one evening.

Also a lick e lix before bed.

She is a very spoilt cat but also a large ragdoll and seems to self regulate her diet. She weighs about 5kg, maybe a little more now.

You mean most cats demand the same. We don’t make the rules.
