Cat seems a bit off. Any ideas? Photo included

She's 7.5, in excellent health and eats well. She's always stood behind the kitchen door in the morning for food!

This morning she wasn't there - she was still asleep curled up on the sofa. This is highly unusual. I did a school run and got back and she was still there.

I shook the dreamies and she sat up but didn't come running . She ALWAYS comes running!

She wouldn't eat her breakfast (after I picked her up) so I pulled out the big guns and popped down a fresh prawn and some fresh crab. Tried a piece of roast chicken. Sniffed but wouldn't eat

I've squeezed her all over and nothing is hurting her. I know 100% she hadn't been in a fight .

I wouldn't call her lethargic as such but she's sat there just looking ... depressed? A bit down?

Took her upstairs with me and she is just laying there. Tried tempting with a dreamie . No.

Purrs when I stroke her. I know cats hide pain but I'm not getting a vibe she's in pain.

Now, I didn't have to look after my daughters Ragdoll yesterday which enraged her. We have multiple rooms downstairs so was able to hero then separate at all times but she was hissing away for a little while - could this still be bothering her? I don't think it's likely

So ... do I leave this a while? Not sure I can take her to a vet with the only symptom being ' she seems a bit down and didn't eat breakfast!'

Thanks in advance

Haven't seen her drink but then I wouldn't really. Fresh water down though of course

She's eaten a small chunk of cheese and some dreamies now. Wouldn't eat her pouch.

She's gone outside now so I'll go and check her shortly. We live in a very quiet area and she doesn't venture out the back garden or far from the front (cul de sac of 4 houses only) so I know for sure she hasn't been hit or had a fight.

What I can't be sure about is if she's ingested something but she's not been sick

I will see how she goes for the rest of the day and she will be at the vets tomorrow if I don't see signs of improvement

I would take her to the vet. I don’t believe many cats would refuse chicken and prawns unless they’re feeling unwell.

Stress can cause cystitis, which along with problems urinating can also cause more general behaviour changes. One of our cats suffered with it on and off and would stop eating when she had it. The vet used to give her some sort of painkiller to help. It could be something else altogether but I’d take her to get checked over.

Hope she’s feeling better and is back to her usual self soon. She’s lovely.

Strange one but my cat did this a few years ago, randomly sitting in weird places being really lethargic etc. turns out he had been drinking out of the toilet and we had put one of this blocks in the cistern that goes through the water when your flush.
Muddy footprints leading to the toilet bowl and on the seat were the give away. We offered him lots of water and kept the lid shut on the toilet and he was back to his normal self if a couple of days xx

Kat1953 · 03/05/2022 17:14

Agree, trust your instincts. I'd guess at feeling unwell although hidden injury could be the cause too.

Don't be afraid to call emergency vet if she seems to get worse.

I've squeezed her all over <- this made me chuckle

Fingers crossed she's feeling much better soon op!

Stickytreacle · 03/05/2022 17:22

I'd suspect urinary issues too if stress has been a factor. Is she using the litter tray?

Chakraleaf · 03/05/2022 17:23

My cat is doing this today? I'd just assumed an off day?

HardRockOwl · 03/05/2022 18:47

She doesn't use her litter tray, although we have one just in case.

I've seen her drink now and I've seen her have a wee - little swine does it at the end of our garden. Why can't she use a neighbours? (JOKES!!) Dhe didn't seem to be in any discomfort

To my shame, I cooked a prawn like some sort of slave and she ate that but a bit slowly. I've given her jaws a good mush about and I don't think it's her teeth.

She's just moving a bit .. slowly. And looks sad.

Now resting on the back of the sofa

It's probably her teeth. Have you got any painkiller for cats - loxicom or similar? If so, give her some, until you get to the vet.

HardRockOwl · 03/05/2022 20:26

I've squished her mouth but can't delve too deeply as I value my fingers and want them to remain intact

I brought out the super super big guns. The lint roller. She perked up alright then.. went through a dozen sheets. She normally gets two swipes of it after we've done the sofa in the morning! She then had a hairbrush for ultra extra fuss.

So I'll see how she is in the morning and if she is not behind the kitchen door miaowing for food, I'll make a vet appointment for tomorrow

I'd say 24 hours without red flag symptoms, as long as she has a drink. But I wouldn't wait longer knowing how cats hide pain. Better to be safe than sorry. Good luck, it's stressful

LoveInSlowMotion · 04/05/2022 08:22

How is she this morning OP? Hoping she was behind the kitchen door waiting for her breakfast. 🤞 🐾

HardRockOwl · 04/05/2022 08:54

She was behind the kitchen door this morning! Miaowing for food. Ate 3/4s of her pouch and went outside and is now back in getting under my feet as normal

So yesterday was a bit weird. She has never just sat there all day and basically ignored the dreamies tin being shaken! And she looked really down

So I suppose cats can have off days! She clearly wasn't feeling well for whatever reason

Thanks for the comments and the advice - here's a pic of her looking happy this morning (if cats can look happy that is(

Please take her to the vet. Our cat was 'off' and it turned out he'd been hit by a car but didn't have any visible injuries - he was just really sad and not eating etc.

Happened to me a few years ago. Cat had broken tail and needed help.

LuluBlakey1 · 04/05/2022 09:00

She does look hunched- a sign of pain in a cat.
Infection- because it raises their temperature- can make them energyless.

If she is uninterested in her food and her behaviour is different- it is a vet appointment. I wouldn't wait.

LoveInSlowMotion · 04/05/2022 09:05

Ah, that’s great news OP, so gad she’s feeling better.

Thats her happy face. 😳😂 Shes gorgeous. 🐾

LoveInSlowMotion · 04/05/2022 09:05

Glad she's ok 😁

OrlandointheWilderness · 04/05/2022 10:17

She's reminding you of how important she is as you seem to have forgotten and were acknowledging another cat exists! 😂

HardRockOwl · 04/05/2022 10:22

@Maydaysoonenough ooh it's like looking in a mirror Grin

Aberration · 04/05/2022 10:30

I think because we don’t know about them we forget that cats can probably have 24 hour bugs just like humans. Or maybe she ate something outside that disagreed with her. Either way glad to hear she’s better!

I still think it’s likely it was urinary/cystitis due to stress. If it is she may be prone to it and it may come and go. A painkiller/anti inflammatory can makes them more comfortable if future flare ups happen, especially if they last longer, so keep an eye on her, I’m sure you will anyway.
