Cat driving me crazy when working from home

I've posted before about my clingy cat, under a name change. She's a 4 year old rescue, I've had her 3 months. I had some good advice last time but I'm back for more as it's more specific to trying to work.

My cat is only happy and secure when she is on my lap. And as I work from home most of the time in the open plan living room/kitchen, it's an issue. She barely sleeps during the day, maybe a couple of hours, she spends the rest of the time yelling at me or prowling around my feet. If I ignore her she puts her paws up on my knee and repeatedly pats my arm, or gets on the table behind me and yells directly in my ear. She only stops when it gets to evening time and she can get on my lap and go to sleep. It is massively distracting for work, and zoom calls are a nightmare as she 'joins in' - she miaows constantly if not on my lap or asleep.

I cuddle her for half an hour in the morning, stroke her frequently in the day, play with her a couple of times with a laser pointer, and have her on my lap all evening. But whatever I do is never enough - she won't do anything without me - she has access to the garden but will only go out there with me, and then come back in with me.

I don't want to ruin her confidence so don't know how strict to be with her. Ignoring her doesn't work, and the yowling is shredding my nerves. She has food and toys, comfortable places to sleep. I say 'no' fairly forcefully and then feel mean. There is no way I'm getting another cat, and she fights with every cat she sees anyway. I have feliway.

I tuck my cat inside my hoody when he feels needy. Leaves my hands free for typing, would that work?

AnyCakeButBattenburg · 11/04/2022 19:36

Is she cold? Cats often like to sit on a lap because they need to get warm - my own cat does so. I leave the heating on for a while.

Literally inside the hood? She does ram herself down the back of my chair sometimes. I've tried balancing her on my lap as I type but she doesn't really fit.

That's a very good point. I had the house colder today because of gas prices and she was particularly exasperating. I'll try and get it a bit warmer.

I’m not a cat owner but I have a thing I can microwave to keep my guinea pigs warm - like a pet hoy water bottle. Might be lovely for your cat to sleep on…

TheSpottedZebra · 11/04/2022 20:08

Have you tried a chair RIGHT next tomyours, so she can sit there but with a paw on you?
Or a cardboard box on desk but behind/out of sight of the camera?

Or a heated Or self-heating bed or pad?

Easterisoffeggstooexpensive · 11/04/2022 20:12

A cuddle buddy?

Absolutely I recommend a cuddle buddy

Try a little electric heated pet pad. Much cheaper than keeping the heating on for the cat, and it will give her her own hot nest 😻

BlueCookieMonster · 11/04/2022 20:25

This is going to sound positively demented, but there was a trend on tiktok about cats and mirroring. Where people who were working from home got their cats little pretend laptops (or an old laptop), put them beside them as they worked and the cats sat with their own laptop.

Perhaps with the heat pad, worth a try?

CaribouCarafe · 11/04/2022 20:28

You can get electric blankets for cats - cheaper than heating your home if you need to save costs

I'm howling at this! I could get her a little matching desk as well.

Thank you all, you've given me a route forward. I did consider a heat pad previously but then it just went out of my mind.

She's adorable, it kills me when she does the paw on my arm or gets on my desk and headbutts my shoulder and I have to try and ignore her. But I lost a ton of work (as in accidentally deleted it) today because I was distracted so I know it has to stop!

My cat is an absolute pest when I'm trying to work so I've put a v thick, folded up fleece blanket on the desk right next to my laptop with a (not too) hot water bottle underneath so it's nice and warm. He happily goes in there now between meals and doesn't get in my way so much!

whatnumber · 11/04/2022 20:40

Awww
My cat sent an email that I hadn't finished for me once and she typed some extra random letters.
Get a heated blanket so both of you can be warm.
My cat (and I) love ours.

Whatsthestoryboringglory · 11/04/2022 20:41

Another one with a demanding cat. I’ve had to put a folded up fleece on the desk for him right next to the laptop when I wfh. He’s a gorgeous menace! Second the idea of a heat pad.

Fluffybunnycat · 11/04/2022 20:46

My little cat was like this and we got her a heated bed. She loves it and spends most of the day sleeping in the office (supervising!) and sleeps on anybody who sits down in the evening. It's a proper bed with a pocket underneath where the heated pad bit goes, so it's like a nest!

I have a plan for tomorrow, fleece wrapped around a hot water bottle placed in her igloo placed on the table behind me (my desk not big enough for it). Fingers crossed that will keep her happy.

Get a Lakeland heated throw. My girls live mine. And it's cheaper than having the heating on!

I do have an electric heated throw - I'm worried about her electrocuting herself though when she kneads.

My cat took over my foot stool. He now sits on it, right next to me. That works.

Fluffybunnycat · 12/04/2022 17:27

How did it go today with the hottie OP?

Madcats · 12/04/2022 17:34

It's taken our cats about a year to get used to home/work patterns; they were a nightmare for the first few months.

We start the day by doing phone stuff in bed with a cuppa. 9 times out of 10, the cats join us and now carry on sleeping for a few hours so we can get some work done in peace.

They definitely like to be warm!
