Cat driving me crazy when working from home

I've posted before about my clingy cat, under a name change. She's a 4 year old rescue, I've had her 3 months. I had some good advice last time but I'm back for more as it's more specific to trying to work.

My cat is only happy and secure when she is on my lap. And as I work from home most of the time in the open plan living room/kitchen, it's an issue. She barely sleeps during the day, maybe a couple of hours, she spends the rest of the time yelling at me or prowling around my feet. If I ignore her she puts her paws up on my knee and repeatedly pats my arm, or gets on the table behind me and yells directly in my ear. She only stops when it gets to evening time and she can get on my lap and go to sleep. It is massively distracting for work, and zoom calls are a nightmare as she 'joins in' - she miaows constantly if not on my lap or asleep.

I cuddle her for half an hour in the morning, stroke her frequently in the day, play with her a couple of times with a laser pointer, and have her on my lap all evening. But whatever I do is never enough - she won't do anything without me - she has access to the garden but will only go out there with me, and then come back in with me.

I don't want to ruin her confidence so don't know how strict to be with her. Ignoring her doesn't work, and the yowling is shredding my nerves. She has food and toys, comfortable places to sleep. I say 'no' fairly forcefully and then feel mean. There is no way I'm getting another cat, and she fights with every cat she sees anyway. I have feliway.

Today was good - definitely upping the heating regime (did a hot water bottle for her and I needed the heating on for myself for a bit) and also some extra food early on rather than later in evening kept her at bay.

I felt a bit offended Grin at how quickly the harassment stoped. But she ran downstairs gratifyingly quickly in the evening when I called her down for lap time.

Oh wow what a gorgeous cat! A female ginger too 😻 If the weather is rubbish my cat will pester me all day, and her favourite place to sit is on my laptop, which obviously isn't convenient. Maybe it's because it's warm 🤔 I hadn't considered that before. If it's a nice day and the sun is out she will spend most of the day out in the garden sunbathing. Such a hard life 😆

Glad you had a productive day. Sorry that you were replaced so easily Grin

We've got some self heating mats - they've got reflective stuff in them so the cat's own heat is bounced back at them. I got mine from Amazon but there's some in Home Bargains for £4.

A box on the desk next to your laptop should sort this 🙂

One of my cats will bite us if we try to eat or work. She also steals food and eats homework. We got another cat to try to teach her that she wasn’t a human. That was pointless. We tried locking her in another room but she yelled or soiled things. We eventually just crate trained her. She loves it. We call out that it’s time and she runs inside and we toss in a tiny treat. Most of the time she then curls up in the bed and naps . No idea why it works, but I suspect she might really be a dog .
