Help please. Very young cat in heat - not sure what to do.

A very cat keeps visiting my neutered cat. She burbles and waves her bum at him - and yowls at night outside the window. This has been going on for a few days. She's not hungry and she wears a collar. I've emailed everyone I know in the building but nobody knows her. I'm pretty sure somebody in a nearby flat owns her and hasn't bothered to get her neutered. The signs of her being in heat are pretty obvious. Any suggestions?

Here she is. My cat Stan is friendly but clearly he's oblivious to her charms. I want to help her but not sure how to. And how long does this go on for?

Is there a phone number on her collar, if whe gets pregnant then thats the owners problem, both look lovely cats.

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/03/2022 12:25

Oh that's a come and get it pose isnt it? the owners might want her pregnant for the kitten experience.

People are mad like that. It's like letting your teenage daughter get gang raped and denying her pain relief in labour because babies are cute.

Elnetthairnet · 28/03/2022 12:27

Poor thing - she’s clearly in heat and will no doubt be up the duff soon because her lazy owners cba to get her spayed.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 28/03/2022 12:33

Agree with everything that's been said, sadly she won't be on heat for long...

I absolutely love the way Stan is just saying 'Hello, what do you want?' while completely ignoring the obvious Grin

NorthSouthcatlady · 28/03/2022 13:02

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats Stan is being the perfect gentleman!

Gorgeous cats. I feel sorry for that poor little girl cat

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/03/2022 15:41

It’d be a shame if she disappeared and turned up 6 weeks later sans ovaries wouldn’t it?

My thoughts exactly. Stan looks very confused - reminds me of my old cat Smoky, absolutely oblivious to our neighbours cats who were never neutered. Just looked utterly bemused Grin
Happenchance · 28/03/2022 15:48

Can you take her to a vet or rescue to be scanned for a chip? They can contact the owner and advise them about neutering her. They may even be able to offer it at a reduced price.

I wouldn't blame OP or anyone else for doing this but also I don't think you can spay an in heat cat (I think... I was responsible enough to get my cats done before they had one!)
Happenchance · 28/03/2022 15:50

Have you posted on Facebook to try and find the owner? You could say that you're worried about her because of FIV etc.

romdowa · 28/03/2022 16:19

Some vets will neuter a cat if caught early enough in pregnancy.

Saggingninja · 28/03/2022 16:41

I've put pictures of her on the 'Nextdoor' App which is local info (durr) and explained. She's still wandering around yowling at my bemused Stan. I've decided to take her to the vet tomorrow and check for a chip. I'll see what they say.

Oh lord, I'm having flashbacks to when Zara had her first heat at 6 months (I delayed on getting her spayed because she was absolutely tiny and I was an inexperienced owner who thought she should probably grow a bit first. Rest assured she was spayed directly afterwards). It lasts about 5 days, she will howl incessantly, rub everywhere and throw herself at any male cat in the vicinity. Its not fun. Any local social medias you can post on? FB group? If its been a few days already it can't be much longer but the sad thing is she's probably already pregnant. Thank you for taking her to the vet. If necessary and the owner agrees they can do a spay/abort.

DoWhatYouLike · 28/03/2022 21:00

It's incredibly irresponsible of an owner to not have had her spayed. I'd be tempted to take her to the vet and get her done, claiming she's a stray. She'll soon be pregnant, poor thing. If not by your boy, then every other tom in the neighbourhood

lulalalala · 28/03/2022 21:16

It could be there's a waiting list. I have two female cats (approx 7 months) and the waiting list ahead of us is huge - it could be several more months with our vets! They're both driving me mad as they seem to alternate coming into heat.

I am not letting them outside though and neither of them seem desperate to escape Grin

Saggingninja · 28/03/2022 23:57

I had no idea that there is a waiting list for spaying. Gymslip Seductress has gone home now and Stan has slunk off to escape her saucy attentions. If she shows up tomorrow though I'm taking her to the vet to see if she has been chipped.

One more question - if a female cat has been impregnated do they carry on wailing and yowling?

If the owner wants her cat to get pregnant, that’s up to the owner…

I certainly wouldn’t steal the cat and take it to the vet. It’s none of your business and that is theft, even if you plan to return it.

Not if the OP's concerned that she could have escaped from her responsible owner's house, where they were keeping her indoors until they could get her spayed. It's a possibility.

Yeah. They can get impregnated by more than one tom. Also the tom has a barbed penis that removes the sperm of other toms when it pulls out so that his have the best chance. They're ridiculously fertile creatures.

Saggingninja · 29/03/2022 10:53

Thewindwhispers To clarify I wasn't going to have the cat spayed, I just wanted to take her to the vet to see if she is chipped.

Also, I am fed up with three days of the cat wailing outside my window at night.

NorthSouthcatlady · 29/03/2022 12:18

@iloveeverykindofcat exactly. My understanding is 1 litter can have more than one dad

lulalalala · 29/03/2022 17:00

@Saggingninja it certainly seems to be the case round me a number of vets - think it's a combo of lockdowns and people buying pets that has caused there to be waiting lists!

Floralnomad · 29/03/2022 17:20

Poor cat , lovely of you to try and help her .We are having to wait a month to get our kittens neutered at our vets but they are short staffed at the moment and I requested a particular vet .

thecatneuterer · 29/03/2022 17:59

I think you should hand her over to a rescue and let them deal with finding the owners, and they will hopefully persuade them to get her neutered.

Yes, vets are very, very short staffed and have been for at least 18 months now. The main reason is Brexit, which unfortunately means it's not likely to get better any time soon.
