My cat might be pregnant! 😃

So happy!!! She is 18 months old. Vet checked her out today because she was due her injections, I reminded him that she was not spayed yet as I wanted her to have a litter and he examined her and believes she is pregnant! That means she cannot have her injections for a few weeks more until after she gives birth. Due approx April 11th - 17th.

My grown up children are more than excited, so am I. I have a list of family members who would like a kitten if possible and I am going to keep one for myself and her. Grin Grin

My children bought me her as a present one Christmas during Covid and she has been the best companion ever. I had previously lost my little dog and other cat due to old age. I will get her spayed after this litter though as the intention was to only let her deliberately have one litter.

I hope all goes well and I am just so excited! Grin

So what's everyone's alternative then? This woman has let her cat become pregnant but is wrong because of all the kittens and cats in rescues that were once wanted. Yet this will continue with unwanted cats in rescues. So either the moggy (domestic shorthair) becomes responsibly bred or dies out if you are against just anyone getting a litter from their cat? Honestly would like to know what people believe should happen.

FloBot7 · 05/03/2022 10:03

I don't know about any of you but when I contacted rescues for a cat I was turned down because I lived on a "busy" road. I actually live in a village and about a 5 minute walk from the high street. By busy they meant that a bus drove past once per hour. We ended up buying a pedigree who we love dearly but I'd rather responsible breeding of moggies was encouraged so it was possible to find a moggy from a breeder you could trust. When I worked at a vets (barring accidents) most of the moggies outlived pure breeds.

IsThisAkissingBook · 05/03/2022 10:04

The domestic shorthair is a cat of mixed ancestry, so saying they are the base is completely wrong. I had a moggy die of hcm as a kitten it was devastating.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/03/2022 10:09

@BuddhaForMary I adopted two ex pedigree breeding queens. They'd been in a kitten farm. And had had a crap start in life. They have run up bills of £22k and one of them died at only eight. She had hereditary heart disease. That she she's no doubt passed on to her many kittens that their owners paid ££££ for. They had/ have a great life with me. But it took years for them to recover from.

TacoCats · 05/03/2022 10:12

There are thousands upon thousands of cats needing rehoming yet your breeding? Selfish doesn't even begin to cover it.

ClariceQuiff · 05/03/2022 10:36

We don't want the moggy to die out. But we are nowhere near a position where there's any danger of that happening. There is a surplus of unwanted mogggies. If we reach a position where there are no longer thousands of unwanted moggies, that would be the point at which to look at a breeding programme.

However, what's done is done and the OP's moggy is PG. I hope she has a healthy litter of beautiful kittens.

Itsbackagain · 05/03/2022 10:36

To echo many many posters. Too many cats which were wanted pets at one point in shelters. Selfish, very selfish.

courgettigreensadwater · 05/03/2022 10:39

Great idea. There are definitely not enough cats without homes already. Well done 👏🏼

IsThisAkissingBook · 05/03/2022 10:43

I really hope a breeding programme can happen one day. I've just had a quick look and there are so many adverts for moggy kittens £200 each!

I was also refused a kitten for the same reason. The road is a road where cats have lived happily for years (most people on the street have a cat) yet despite this and the fact I had a cat who lived to a ripe old age the rescue centre refused to even allow me to look for a new one. Awful to say it but a lot of the rescue centres seem to be doing their best to make it more difficult for people to get a cat hence people looking at alternatives such as online sites.
slashlover · 05/03/2022 11:16

By also letting your cat get to 18 months without neutering, you have increased the chance that she will develop pyometra (infection of the womb) and certain cancers.

Hoppinggreen · 05/03/2022 11:16

Why do you think Rescue centres make it difficult to get a cat?
It’s either because they are looney cat hoarders OR that they know what can and does go wrong. I can’t comment on any individual cases on here but I used to Homecheck for CPL and I DID turn people down who thought I made the wrong decision but I never did it lightly.
I sympathise- I missed out on a Rescue dog because despite being an ideal home (their words) I couldn’t jump through one particular hoop bit I accepted it because I felt they must have had their reasons

This is because we are not yet in kitten season. In a couple of months they won't be able to give them away. From end April to end October our rescue has to take in countless litters of unwanted kittens. They are dumped in the waiting room, dumped in boxes next to communal bins, abandoned in parks, thrown into the street etc etc - an average of two litters a day just coming to our one shelter at some points.

No one will be selling kittens for any decent money at those times.

No one should be allowing their cats to have kittens. Even if they find homes, those homes could have taken in some of these other unwanted kittens.

It's so depressing that some people still don't see anything wrong with allowing their cat to have kittens. I would love to make people who think it's ok spend some time in a rescue at the height of kitten season. All other ways to get the message across are obviously not effective enough.

fairylightsandwaxmelts · 05/03/2022 11:26

@IsThisAkissingBook

The moggy (domestic shorthair) needs to die out. Honestly there is no reason on earth why letting a moggy have one litter should ever happen. Most gccf breeders now neuter their non active kittens before they leave to stop irresponsible breeding.
What on earth is wrong with a moggy?
EdgeOfSeventeenAndThreeQuarter · 05/03/2022 11:33

My poor CPL moggy was terrified to go out during lockdown due to all the arseholes buying lockdown kittens and not having them neutered. The Toms used to sit on the outside window ledges yowling at her.

Thankfully we moved away.

Bonkers OP - “planned” but you literally have no idea which Tom got at her.

ThisBloodyNoiseInMyHead · 05/03/2022 11:34

What a selfish, stupid, irresponsible person you are. At least wait until the kittens are 12 weeks of age before you sell them! They should be treated for fleas and worms too (why am I saying this - you're so ignorant and stupid, you'll do what ever you like)

Floralnomad · 05/03/2022 11:39

Surely if you are really desperate for your cat to have kittens the responsible thing would have been to source a healthy mate for her not just send her out to be got at by any disease ridden moggy . Not that I condone the indiscriminate breeding of anything .

Motnight · 05/03/2022 11:40

Bloody hell.

IsThisAkissingBook · 05/03/2022 11:41

Nothing at all wrong with a moggy cat. But there is wrong in that how many end up unwanted. That tom cat was once a lovely kitten that someone shared photos of and loved. But a tom becomes a ragged cat, with ripped ears and scavenging for food. Unwanted and unloved. Moggy cats are left abandoned and in shelters. No excuse not to neuter, it's free if you receive certain benefits and if you can't afford it then there's your answer.

RockinHorseShit · 05/03/2022 11:59

I can't stand backyard breeders & yiure actually happy about it. Yiu should be ashamed of yourself Hmm

nodogz · 05/03/2022 12:14

I don't get pet breeding, why would you put your best friend through something which might injure or kill them.

I love my pets. And my current dog is the "one in a lifetime" pet who is the sweetest, most wonderful girl. I've had her since a puppy.

For about two minutes I thought about breeding her to get another one of her. Multiple friends and family have asked if I would breed her, any puppies would go. I even know a good, healthy stud for her breed in my circle. I've fostered kittens and kept animals all my life so I know I could do it if she couldn't.

But I spayed her after two seasons (seasons are no fun for her) I couldn't bear the idea of pregnancy or birth hurting or killing her. She's my best friend.

I even ruled out cloning her, every day is a gift with her

Not just moggies . I looked at a Rescue specialising in Pedigree cats ( not to aquire one )
Bred to an aesthetic that prefers a certain face shape . Maybe these didn't meet the criteria . Maybe the owners couldn't cope wih the health issues ?
And don't get me started on the number of This little lady is looking for a lovely 5* retirement home where she can be spoiled rotten
Basically "We've bred her to buggery and sold her kitttens for ££ , now she's no use but we don;t want to keep her and feed her . She's never had a chance to do cat things but Hey ! I've got my new breeding queen to look after , so........"

Sadly a lot of male kittens do end up as Toms , running around getting into fights Scars infection abcesses . Get run over as they search for a mate . Spray piss and get shut out of the house .
Maybe they escape . Maybe the owners CBA

Our two were lucky that they were rescued /neutered and ended up homed . Otherwise I think she would have repopulated East London with kittens and he'd have ended up a terrified , bullied out of his territory , living in a shed moggie hosting fleas and FIV ,
I'm sure their Mum was a loved cat at one point .....

Ijustreallywantacat · 05/03/2022 12:25

I don't know about any of you but when I contacted rescues for a cat I was turned down because I lived on a "busy" road.

I also found it impossible to adopt. Firstly we have never had a pet, we live in a flat (ground floor, with a cat flap leading to secure garden) and in one particularly frustrating phone call was turned down because we both work full time. However, one of us works from home full time!

I wish we could adopt from a rescue. We tried for so long but I'm afraid to say when we do get a cat we will have to buy.

Anyway, I'm sure it's irresponsible to breed, but they've all got homes and I don't think its any worse than official breeders encouraging genetic deformities.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 05/03/2022 12:27

When the Vet said "I think she might be pregnant" was it a "Oh how lovely , lucky you , and lucky lucky little cat and kittens"

Or was it a "I think she's pregnant , you've missed the boat , you could;ve had her spayed but now you have to decided if you let her have a littter or spay a pregnant queen" (which they will do and lots of owners will choose but you might not be comfortable with it )

Maybe your Vet wasn't quite as happy as you are ....?

IsThisAkissingBook · 05/03/2022 12:36

Yes there are breed specific rescues, with waiting lists often and are found homes pretty quickly. There can be bad amongst gccf breeders but you do need to do your homework on breeds and breeders. Our kitten is from one of the best for the breed, she has kept every single adult cat. Lots which weren't suitable for breeding. He was very expensive and neutered, she doesn't breed often because surprisingly enough people don't want a kitten that is neutered before taking home. They just want to become backyard breeders. True breeder knows about matching, health testing, correct feeding and in the end makes very little money from it. None of my cats have health issues. I adopted my male ragdoll when he was 5 (he is now 10) his owner was given an ultimatum by her boyfriend because of how needy the cat is.
