My baby is being spayed today. She is tiny and only 4 months old Sad

But the vet said I should do it now as her mother was only 6 months old when she had her. Still can't help feeling bad about it though, she's only a baby.

You are soooooo doing the right thing. They bounce right back and you will never have to worry about her escaping and getting pregnant.

cheeseislife8 · 21/02/2022 13:54

Definitely, it's always a worry when they're in but spaying is the best thing for her. She'll soon be back to her normal self

dementedpixie · 21/02/2022 13:57

Both my boys were neutered at 4 months. She'll be fine

thecatneuterer · 21/02/2022 14:23

She won't even notice. And yes, four months is the right time to do it.

REP22 · 21/02/2022 14:46

I totally understand why you feel bad about it and maybe a bit guilty (I know I did when I had my dog spayed).

But please be assured that you're doing the right thing.

Apart from unwanted pregnancies, entire females are also prone to pyometra, an extremely nasty infection in the uterus. It's absolutely awful; very painful and can be fatal. I've seen it in both cats and dogs and it's utterly grim. You are doing the best thing that you can to protect her from that.

Not to mention sparing her from the attentions of local randy toms for her years to come, and I'm sure she'd thank you for that.

You're doing the right thing.

Best wishes to you and your little feline friend. x

My kits were done at 4m -- bounced right back. Fast recovery.

Longcovid21 · 21/02/2022 15:01

I felt bad too, but if they're outdoors cats you really have to. They breed several times a year. The boys have spikey penis'!
Ours recovered fine and is happy and playful and affectionate.

Greattimestroubledtimes · 21/02/2022 15:03

My two were done last week. They recovered so fast, and didn't blame us at all! I felt awful too, but they so don't care already!

Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 21/02/2022 15:05

We had to wait ages as ours took forever to reach 2.5 kg!! She was totally fine.. Still hasn't grown much. Feisty though!!.

There is no need whatsoever for a cat to need to reach 2.5kg before spaying. Rescues spay at 1kg. Any weight over that is fine. At four months most will weigh around 1.7 or so. Some cats don't get to 2.5kg ever! That's a ridiculous rule and if your vet insists on it then I don't think they should be practising.
Easterbunnyiswindowshopping · 21/02/2022 15:22

Well ours was a rescue (from.a feral colony and the dm was killed) and vet said for anaesthetic she had to be 2.5 kg. Just took them at their word! She stayed in til then so no worry.

dementedpixie · 21/02/2022 15:28

My vet wouldn't do mine until 6 months old so I took them to a vet that would do them at 4 months.

Want2beme · 21/02/2022 15:42

My kitten was done at 5 months, as she hadn't reached the weight the vet wanted her to be. I can't remember what that was. She was driving me and my boy cats crackers, constantly wanting their attention. Poor things were in a state of horror, as they didn't know what to do with herGrin.

Is she home yet OP?

Wolfiefan · 21/02/2022 19:03

Our first rescue cats were a 2 year old and her 18 month old son.
I would always spay and chip ASAP!!

QueenFool · 21/02/2022 19:19

My kitten was tiny when she was spayed, I was so worried about her

She came home and went straight up top of my curtains, not a care in the world and just carried on as if nothing had happened. Amazing really!

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 21/02/2022 20:00

Thanks everyone. I had to ring the vet in the evening after I got her home because ADHD kitten would not rest or sit. She was jumping round the house, attacking my feet and tormenting the older cat as usual. The vet said dont worry. She also wriggled her arms and legs out of her body suit and was trapped in it like a loaf of bread. Unbelievable!!!!

Op, I'm wondering how your girl got on? I've just brought mine home and she's hiding in a box and seems so so sad 😞 she hates the cone and is rejecting all cuddles/ beds in favour of an empty cardboard box

Fluffycloudland77 · 23/02/2022 19:46

Has she got pain relief?

thecatneuterer · 23/02/2022 20:48

@kittenkipper It's the cone that makes them behave like that. Lots of vets (including the one I'm with) don't use them. I would take it off and just keep an eye on her to see if she bothers the stitches.

kittenkipper · 23/02/2022 21:12

She has although I can't give her any till
Tomorrow. It is the cone I think. She HATES it. She's come around a bit now and I walking backwards dragging it trying to get it off. Hitting it on furniture etc poor thing. The vet was very sure she needed it for10 days (!)

HecatesDinosaurs · 23/02/2022 22:41

My kitten was recently spayed and I never got a cone but the vet recommended a recovery suit. You can buy them on amazon. In the end I didn't bother and just kept an eye on her and she was absolutely fine. As long as they're not obsessively licking the wound it's not an issue.

Nowmum43 · 24/02/2022 08:41

Just dropped my little girl off and feeling very anxious. She's 5 1/2 months but seems so tiny. Hoping the op goes smoothly and she recovers well. I just want her back home with me now Sad

kittenkipper · 24/02/2022 08:56

Nowmum- don't be too worried. My dcat isn't happy but over the last 12/15 hours has improved so much. Eating drinking jumping ( onto the 5 ft bookcase! Naughty girl) and sort of sleeping. This morning I have removed the collar whilst I'm here with her and it has relieved her enough to properly curl up and sleep for the first time. As soon as it came off her imperative was not to bother her stich but rather to curl into her comfy sleep position. I've ordered a surgery suit for her which should be here later today

I'm trying my best not to worry but I'm definitely a worrier 😁 We just love her so much and she's the perfect little kitty that I hate that I'm having to make her have an op Sad I've said to the vets we don't want a cone/suit as we will be home with her for a few days and can keep an eye on her. We'll pick one up if needed. She's a big cuddler and think it would upset her if she couldn't cuddle us properly. How do the suits work if they need the toilet? I'd prefer one of those over a cone if needed. Glad your kitty is doing well, although being naughty and jumping 😁
Fluffycloudland77 · 24/02/2022 09:22

Did you cry going home like I did?
