how often between complete litter tray changes?

Obviously we clan the litter daily and more so when it obviously needs it, and subsequently top up with fresh litter.
But how often do you regularly turf out all the litter and start afresh?
If it makes a difference, we use clumping litter and have use tray liners. It's a medium sized tray with a hood (did have a door to enter but this won't work with the liner, so we keep the door off).

I'm asking because when we first had the cat, we didn't use tray liners and every week I changed the litter completely and disinfected the tray. This was always because the plan was for her to go outdoors, which she did do successfully for many years. Currently she's indoors over winter which recovering from an operation, so the litter tray is back out. I'm not bleaching inbetween litter changes due to the liner, however weekly complete litter changes seems excessive, or is it? Hence the question!

Twice a week.

We do a full empty and replace each of 3 trays unless it's obviously not been used at all.

If I do it, they get disinfected then washed and scrubbed. If it's DH, he just gives them a quick clean.

We use wooden pellet litter and have 2 indoor cats.

I use wooden pellet litter with one indoor car. I change it completely once a week, never needs to be more frequent then that.

LadyDanburysHat · 01/12/2021 09:44

I'm the same as @HarrietOh. Pellet litter and weekly changes.

Toddlerteaplease · 01/12/2021 11:07

Monthly. The litter is really good clumping stuff.

Litter robot is the way to go. Seriously it's a game changer! 😻

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 01/12/2021 12:09

We use clumping litter. In all honesty I barely ever empty and wash out the tray completely - it just isn't necessary with a deep filled (clumping) litter tray.

TeenMinusTests · 01/12/2021 16:26

We have an indoor cat. If I remember do a complete change every fortnight (just before bin collection) with a top up half way through. I find it clumps less well as it gets older.

Ilovemycat13 · 01/12/2021 16:28

I used wooden pellets and cleaned it out completely once a week. I cleared out any poop etc daily but it seems unfair to let it go any longer. Mine was an indoor cat

LakeShoreD · 01/12/2021 16:29

Litter robot is the way to go.
This!

ShinySquirrel · 01/12/2021 16:30

We do weekly full changes and daily scooping and topping up. It's used by one and a half cats (the half goes outside but not when it's cold, thank-you-very-much).

lynntheyresexpeople · 01/12/2021 16:33

1/2 a week full liner and litter change. I use cat san smart packs as the liners are heavy duty! Scoop every time she does a poo, top with fresh litter

Theunamedcat · 01/12/2021 16:34

Twice a week no bleach I use a bit if biological washing liquid spray the trays rinse and dry three indoor cats

NotMyCat · 01/12/2021 16:34

Er Blush I don't tend to? His litter is deep and it's clumping so no wet/dirt even touches the sides or bottom

ErinAoife · 01/12/2021 16:37

Daily scooping here and once a week for full change of litter.

Brusca · 01/12/2021 16:52

I use Intersand which says 40 days between full litter change and that's probably about right. Deep fill tray, scoop every day, and unlike my last 2 cats this one doesn't make a mess up the sides, so it stays very clean.

HoollyWugger · 01/12/2021 17:08

Can we have recommendations of what cat litter you're all using please?

NotMyCat · 01/12/2021 17:14

I use cats best

Ninananna · 01/12/2021 17:18

Two siamese cats. One of them has gut issues. Their tray is emptied, bleach cleaned and refilled every day, sometimes more if necessary. Costs more but don't feel comfortable about not cleaning it properly. Wood pellets in an enclosed litter tray with door removed.

TheOpportuneMoment · 01/12/2021 17:22

Rarely get to be honest. But my cats hardly ever use it, just the occasional wee if it's overnight and they're inside. We use clumping litter, scoop it all out quickly and they aren't diggers so it's all contained in one little ball.

Same - probably once a fortnight if I remember (or the fussy cat starts pooping elsewhere!)
Yirk · 01/12/2021 17:30

Twice a week using catsan, scoop poop out in between changes

EmpressCixi · 01/12/2021 17:31

Once a week complete dump, wash and refill with fresh litter. Scoop twice a day, morning and evening. Have two cats and three trays.

TeenMinusTests · 01/12/2021 17:39

I pretty much scoop after every use. If I see it is no longer smooth then I scoop.

icedcoffees · 01/12/2021 17:49

We use Cats' Best litter and we have three indoor cats.

I scoop every time I see them do a poo, plus daily each morning for wee clumps. It gets completely changed every 7-10 days and topped up once or twice in between. We have four trays.

Ludo19 · 01/12/2021 17:56

I use Catsan. Have indoor cats. Poop gets scooped when one is deposited throughout the day. Full clean and empty regime every morning using the johnsons litter tray spray.
