how often between complete litter tray changes?

Obviously we clan the litter daily and more so when it obviously needs it, and subsequently top up with fresh litter.
But how often do you regularly turf out all the litter and start afresh?
If it makes a difference, we use clumping litter and have use tray liners. It's a medium sized tray with a hood (did have a door to enter but this won't work with the liner, so we keep the door off).

I'm asking because when we first had the cat, we didn't use tray liners and every week I changed the litter completely and disinfected the tray. This was always because the plan was for her to go outdoors, which she did do successfully for many years. Currently she's indoors over winter which recovering from an operation, so the litter tray is back out. I'm not bleaching inbetween litter changes due to the liner, however weekly complete litter changes seems excessive, or is it? Hence the question!

Like @NotMyCat I use Cats Best and can go 3 months between full changes, it's a big tray deep filled with Cats Best and his bits and bobs are removed daily. He doesn't bury things deep so to my mind it would be a waste to do a full change more often.
He prefers a deep fill, kicked the litter all over the place when less was put in but he buries things more neatly when he has deeper litter.
I got clumping litter just for this purpose.

Scoop every day. Change x2 weeks. Decent litter is needed

RavenT · 01/12/2021 22:28

Daily scoop, probably change complete tray every 3/4 days. Less in summer when he hardly uses it as he's outside a lot more.

We use the costco clumping litter (when it's in stock) and Lidl clumping litter otherwise.
4 cats, one large litter tray. (Occasionally 2 cats will use the tray at the same time)

@Grumpyoldpersonwithcats

We use clumping litter. In all honesty I barely ever empty and wash out the tray completely - it just isn't necessary with a deep filled (clumping) litter tray.
Pretty much this.

I bought the largest hooded tray I could find (over 10 years ago now). My reckoning was along the lines of - I hate going out and finding that venues (usually lovely old pubs) have toilets that you need to perform like a contortionist to squeeze in, turn around and shut the door, it’s not dignified! Why should my cat suffer the same?

So , very large hooded tray. Cats Best clumping litter. Clumps are stopped out every day. No way is “stuff” reaching bottom of the tray. No need for a full Chuck out of all the litter. Also, with this clumping litter, it’s really easy to “see” any stray contaminated bits - the colour changes slightly.

I clean the inside of the hood every week - not that I really need to, there’s enough room inside that there’s not much mess, but I prefer to do so.

And it’s not that he doesn’t use the tray. He’s a fussy gut. Has outside access every day - but will come in to use his tray and then heads out to the garden again.

Twice a week. Cat is aggressive in scratching. I line 2 trays with newspaper then litter. Every day the litter is on the floor and the newspaper in a pile on top in a thousand pieces.
Was wondering whether just to leave out the newspaper. Any tips?

We use recycled paper pellets, no liner, and I completely change it for a fresh load once a week. I don't clean the tray out and bleach it when I do this. I can't even remember the last time I did that - probably over a year ago.

JurgensCakeBaby · 02/12/2021 04:47

Once a week the night before bin collection. Scooped in between, might stretch to ten days or so in summer when he's out s lot and it gets less use. One tray, one cat

Trinacham · 02/12/2021 06:43

I do a complete clean about twice a week. They have 3 litter trays - 2 with clumping. The third one doesn't have to be cleaned as much - it's a seive style tray with wood pellets (really good if cleaning is a pain for you!)

HerRoyalHappiness · 02/12/2021 06:47

Once a week. Any less and my grumpy old boy starts peeing on the furniture. He's a fussy bugger. The other 2 wouldn't care.

swampytiggaa · 02/12/2021 06:49

Every other day. I use wood pellets and have 3 cats sharing one tray. We scoop out pop as soon as we spot or smell it tho.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 02/12/2021 11:45

I have unfussy cats. They haven't read the rules about having multiple trays or only going in the tray if it was disinfected 5 minutes ago.
It's a great help Grin

Behind is the 'splashback' curtain.

My 3 have shared a tray from day 1. They are sisters and from birth shared with their mom and a Maine coon too 😂😂

We use Sainsburys Ultra Clumping litter in a deep tray (one bag fills the whole tray). Clumps get taken out twice a day, and it gets topped up with half a bag once a week. Because it is so good at clumping I don't need to clear it out fully as the wee / poo doesn't get down to the bottom of the tray, and it's really easy to see the clumps as and when you rake over it. Bit more pricy than normal stuff but much better value.
