Where does your cat sleep at night?

I have a 16 week old cat and as cute as he is, sleeping with him in the room can be a nightmare. When he's on the bed, I can't sleep properly because I'm so worried about myself or my partner rolling onto him! This means I never sleep deeply because I'm always on alert. He also loves to climb on my pillow leaving me no room.

On the other hand, I feel absolutely awful for some reason shutting him out of our bedroom or downstairs! He has places to sleep, eat, drink, play and toilet of course, but I can't help but feel bad for not letting him snuggle with us.

I am 32 weeks pregnant and do realise that when the baby is here he won't be able to be in the same room anyway because he of course will inevitably jump into the crib.

So where do your cats sleep (or not sleep!) in your house? Hopefully I'm not being cruel and it's just my pregnancy emotions making me feel bad Grin I

I was going to say let him find somewhere else to snuggle but then I saw the photos...How could you even consider not letting him snuggle with you every night??

He lovvvves you!

My two cats are allowed in the living room and the kitchen, with an open window in the hall for 24/7/365 access to the rest of the whole wide world. (We live rurally.)

Mostly they sleep on the sofa dh and I use, either on us/the seats if we're not there, but they also like the back of that sofa. There is another sofa they sometimes use, plus one of the window ledges is popular. There is an armchair they completely shun. Hmm

Sometimes they sleep on the floor in front of the fire, but this is less common than it was for my previous cat. Sometimes they sleep on top of the firewood, I have no idea why but they're cats so... And of course when there's a new box they sleep in that. They usually sleep separately, but when it's really cold they do still curl up together.

They don't sleep in the kitchen, even when it's warm, but there is a styrofoam box in the hall awaiting recycling, which currently serves as a handy insulated throne for one of them. They also hang out near the window, where there is a pile of no-longer-clean outgrown baby clothes getting grubbier by the day.

Oh, and I've caught the buggers on top of the fridge freezer a few times, I guess the heat attracts them.

They are four and a half years old, have lived with me since eight weeks of age, and have never shared a bed with a human. They're fine. :)

Your being unfair and you must give him to me immediately.... omg he's just so fluffy... I love him.

MajorNeville · 30/11/2021 01:50

Ours sleeps on a comfy chair in the kitchen, she often takes herself off to bed early so I know she's happy in there. I couldn't sleep with her on my bed, I'd hate it.

KylieKangaroo · 30/11/2021 01:50

I have to shut my girl in the living room, I used to leave the window open for her but we kept getting dead mice in the morning and a live one once too! I'd love it if she slept peacefully on my bed but she's awake most of the night!

FliesAreMad · 30/11/2021 01:56

Oh I’ve been rethinking this lately. Have a two year old inside cat. He usually has the run of the house at night but has taken to waking us up around 5am every few days (just us, not the kids), usually because he wants some attention, or to be able to look out a door or window that’s shut so wants us to open it. And he does noisey annoying scratching or meowing until he gets his way.

Have decided he’s going to be sleeping in his outdoor cat run all night from now on, as I’m too old to deal with a cat-toddler waking disruptions. And we are in a warm country so it’s not cruel shutting him in his run, he’s sheltered, has access to litter and water and his toys, plus gets to watch the outside night stuff which is always interesting.

Many years ago, I did bed share with my first kitten, and left the window open for him. He used to come in in the middle of the night and heat his cold wet paws on my belly, under the duvet. Loved that wee darling, but current house setup doesn't permit.

bizboz · 30/11/2021 01:58

On my feet! She does get a bit annoying around 4am when she goes for a 5 minute zoom around the house but other than that I don't notice she's there. However, if your cat is disturbing you and has to learn to sleep outside the room anyway I would start getting them used to sleeping downstairs now. Offer a selection - blanket on sofa, cat bed (of course they will never use this), radiator bed. My cat's nose was well and truly put out of joint when my first baby was born so it might be as well to sort out the sleeping arrangements that might also cause him offence well before the baby arrives.

Ensure lots of snuggles and lap time before bed.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 30/11/2021 02:01

Utility room. They have a comfy bed (they like to sleep spooned together), food, water and a litter tray.

No way I could deal with then rampaging around the house at night, or trying to sleep on my face.

Pixiedust1234 · 30/11/2021 02:07

Our cat decides when it's bedtime and herds us to our various bedrooms (any time between 8pm and midnight). She will have a warmup cuddle with one of us and then move to the bottom of the bed, or go sleep on one of her special places. She has a special pillow on top of a pouffe next to daughters bed, a cat bed on the human bed (wedged against a wall so it doesn't fall off) or we have put a special heat retaining sheepskin blanket on top of a big box. As you can see its height she is after, with snuggly comfort. Can you put a cattree bed in your room?

halloweenie13 · 30/11/2021 02:31

we've always only let the cat's sleep downstairs, I am in my own house now away from my parents house so when my parents go away I let them sleep in the bed with me but typically the family would set boundaries. I would probably do the same for little cats when I get my new kitten. Have the kitten in the living room

gaslady14 · 30/11/2021 02:48

Our cat would sleep in our room but prefers on the stairs outside; I hear snores from there as we speak. She'd never snuggle up near us; you are blessed! And hes gorgeous

Anystarinthesky · 30/11/2021 02:51

My cat sleeps on her own pillow on my bed.

NomDePrune · 30/11/2021 02:54

Anywhere that is not in our bedroom! Although if he does come in he does a weird flying jump across the top of our pillows that freaks me out. But otherwise this

My cat sleeps in bed with me if I'm taking too long shell start meowing to tell me its bedtime!

inflatableseahorses · 30/11/2021 03:19

Our cat collects DD at DD's bedtime and escorts her upstairs and spends the next few hours sleeping on the end of DD's bed. Around midnight, she usually heads outside although for the past few nights she has headed to the spare room where we have made a cushion/blanket nest for her. If she comes in between around 3 & 6am, she will go the spare room, after that and it's into DD's room so she can pretend she's been there all night although the mouse scurrying around sometimes gives this away. If DD ever gets up before the cat is back in position, the cat looks mightily embarrassed. She then spends the morning on the spare bed, often the afternoon too although for that nap she can move into my study.
If anything happens to upset this routine, for example, human guests are staying in the spare room, she will instead spend much of the day under a bed. We're not sure what's going to happen at Xmas when we will have people in both the spare room and DD's room...

MayLeaveADentInYourSofa · 30/11/2021 03:28

Very adorable kitty, OP.

My cat sleeps on either mine or DH's pillow next to our head. She waits until we are asleep before choosing which pillow and settling. Somehow we all get a good night's sleep like this.

sjxoxo · 30/11/2021 03:34

Ours used to sleep with us and would love it but we get no sleep if she’s there. She has a lovely snuggly bed on the landing and we peel her off of our bed and put her in there now when we go to bed. She’ll pop out for a wee first thing then rush back up the stairs for a snuggle in the mornings whilst I have a cup of tea in bed. She then spends the rest of the morning in our bed and goes out in the afternoons. She’s a real cuddle monster but given the chance will share my pillow with me and I just get no sleep, lovely as she is! Her bed is an old suitcase without the lid, with a big cushion in and a sheepskin shearling blanket. Xo

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 30/11/2021 03:37

Generally two sleep on the end of our bed, one on the bedroom windowsill, and one on the kitchen table.

Rachel4545 · 30/11/2021 03:40

Our 2 sleep downstairs in the kitchen with access to outside. I wouldn’t have a cat sleeping in the same room as a baby. I’d be on edge all night for them getting into the crib.

ISpyCobraKai · 30/11/2021 03:40

On my bed × 3.

SalsaLove · 30/11/2021 04:08

On the sofa, on my husband’s feet, on my feet. Occasionally in the wardrobe if the door is left open.

Motherofcats007 · 30/11/2021 07:01

One of mine sleeps in the spare bedroom and the other sleeps between us. The cuddly one was locked out of the bedroom when we had our and now she’s allowed back in after baby has moved to her own room…. Until the next baby arrives!!

Pascha · 30/11/2021 07:06

Toto has taken to flaking out across the hall right outside the bedroom door Hmm. It's because there's a warm pipe under the floor of course. Phoebe tends to prefer the sofa.
