One of my friends posted about some kittens. They were from one of her friends. We are looking so I said yes. Asked how much....£50 for friend of friend....I said sorry, I'm not willing to pay that much and she replies they were selling for £100 in May.
I'm happy to pay for a kitten but that's just too much and it sounds like she's selling them to make money.
How much are you willing to pay?

I paid £50 10 years ago.
If that is too much then maybe you don't want one that much? You are not doing them many favour by having one and they need to know it is going to a good home.

overnightangel · 15/09/2021 16:29

Get a rescue and make a donation to the charity … amazes me people are paying money when there’s ones that need homes

PivotPivotPivottt · 15/09/2021 16:33

£50 is very cheap especially since covid. I paid £60 and £40 in 2019 for my kittens. I've been looking for another one and people are asking for £300+.

Are you for real?? I paid £400 for a non breed kitten just after Christmas! And that was one of the cheaper ones- they were in crazy demand!!

Totally fallacy in many areas these days I’m afraid. Kittens in so much demand that trying to get one from a rescue is rare as hens teeth. If you have younger kids, many older cats arnt suitable either from rescues
MrsFin · 15/09/2021 16:38

@Unreasonabubble

Not how much am I willing but my DD bought me one for Christmas and it cost her £300.

When I was a child, we gave kittens away for free. Times have changed.

They still get given away free round here. We didn't pay for ours.

In certain areas it is impossible to get rescues. RSPCA have waiting lists of hundreds of people for kittens, and CPL make unreasonable requests/requirements/are complete loons.

My last two kittens came from school parents, both from naughty young kitties who got pregnant before being neutured. We paid £100 each for those, vet checked and de-flead and wormed, but not neutured as too young.

Soubriquet · 15/09/2021 16:48

£50 is cheap for a kitten now

They should never have been sold cheaply and I’m glad the price is going up

I paid £60

LST · 15/09/2021 16:53

I wouldn't pay that for kittens or dogs. I don't agree with breeding for money. I've had 5 cats and all were free and a dog for a 100 quid off a farmer as he was keeping 3 for farm dogs and had 3 left over.

That's irresponsible. That means no one is looking out for the health or welfare of these kittens or cats and it breaks my heart. Free kittens clearly have not had any health checks at all.

andynarwhal · 15/09/2021 18:24

Donated £120 each for two kittens from a local rescue centre earlier this year, that included chip, flea, worm, neutering. I understand that kittens are very cute but have always had older rescue cats until then and always donated a similar amount because I am glad the rescue centres exist. Pay whatever you think is right but please consider a rescue instead.

Clymene · 15/09/2021 18:25

Why don't you get one from a shelter? Don't encourage people to breed their cats.

lemonsyellow · 15/09/2021 18:29

We didn’t pay for our kitten. She was free from a school friend of DD. And we then paid for all the vaccines and microchips and neutering etc.

Unreasonabubble · 15/09/2021 18:30

When I received the kitten and she was most gratefully received as I had lost both a dog and a cat 18 months ago, the first trip was to the Vet who checked her all over, gave her injections etc and now she is on a "Vet Plan" which I pay monthly for which includes all her injections, worming and flea treatments.

My daughter lives in London and unfortunately people were cashing in on the Covid crisis and charging a lot more for pets. I did not know the price she paid until I went to insure her and asked my daughter. I was horrified but still really, really grateful for my little bundle of fluff.

rhowton · 16/09/2021 14:39

Ours was £90 from a rescue

Evenstar · 16/09/2021 14:43

We have three dogs and our kitten came from a friend who also had dogs, every cat I have seen from a rescue near us has said cannot live with dogs, most also will not home with DC’s under 12. Rescue isn’t an option for everyone.

Evenstar · 16/09/2021 14:46

My dogs are all rescue, and I have helped a dog rescue and a local rabbit rescue with transport runs and we regularly donate to Cats Protection so we try to do our bit. I have had several rescued cats in the past when we didn’t have dogs.

I agree. The cat charity I'm involved with is very very strict on rehoming. However, I just wish people would not give kittens or any animals away for free because they have clearly never been near a vet. Also, believe it or not, it's a grim topic, but free animals can sometimes be acquired for the live feeding of reptiles. That makes me shudder.

Evenstar · 16/09/2021 14:49

@Peteycat totally agree and I have rescued many guinea pigs over the years that were being given away for free, as they are particularly vulnerable to becoming reptile food.

BurntO · 16/09/2021 14:50

You’ll struggle to get one for less than £50

Thank you for rescuing them. I have kept piggies all my life x

Mammma91 · 16/09/2021 15:02

I paid £100 for my male and £125 for my female a year apart.
They are now part of the family and we very much don’t regret the price we paid for them at all. £50 seems cheap to me - mine were wormed, treated for flees (as precaution) and vet checked.

TSSDNCOP · 16/09/2021 16:04

CPL wouldn't let me adopt either. So mine were £50 each from the same litter in 2012.

I often wonder who CPL do manage to find given their draconian rules.

dreamofaVWcamper · 16/09/2021 16:08

£50 is incredible reasonable for a family pet!

dreamofaVWcamper · 16/09/2021 16:09

@SweetBabyCheeses99

“it sounds like she's selling them to make money”

Heaven forbid! Make sure you never take your poor kitty to the vets, I don’t think you’d get over the shock
