£50 to £100 for a kitten!

One of my friends posted about some kittens. They were from one of her friends. We are looking so I said yes. Asked how much....£50 for friend of friend....I said sorry, I'm not willing to pay that much and she replies they were selling for £100 in May.
I'm happy to pay for a kitten but that's just too much and it sounds like she's selling them to make money.
How much are you willing to pay?

I paid 100 - 125 each for mine all in the past 18 months which I thought was cheap. I would have paid more.

Kittens that are really cheap can end up horribly mistreated and at worse at dog bait.

Unreasonabubble · 14/09/2021 21:10

Not how much am I willing but my DD bought me one for Christmas and it cost her £300.

When I was a child, we gave kittens away for free. Times have changed.

dementedpixie · 14/09/2021 21:11

We paid £100 each for 2 kittens 4 years ago

lljkk · 14/09/2021 21:11

I got 2 kittens from CPL for £75 10 yrs ago.
I'm getting 2 more from CPL next week, expecting to pay at least £100 this time.

CPL do all sorts before you get the kitten so I'm not surprised at that cost because it's worth it.

£100 is the norm I'd say for a non pedigree

And friend of a friend should stop breeding kittens for £100 a pop. It's irresponsible

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/09/2021 21:14

We adopted ours from a local rescue charity and they request minimum donations of £60.

£50 for a living being that is a lifelong commitment is nothing. Do you know how much good quality food, neutering, vaccinations, monthly flea, tick and worm treatments and insurance or private veterinary care cost?

If £50-£100 is too much for you, please do not acquire a cat.

AwkwardPaws27 · 14/09/2021 21:14

Mine was £95 from the RSPCA but that covered vaccinations and neutering too, plus he was deflead, wormed & vetchecked. I also got 4 weeks free insurance which was peace of mind until mine kicked in Smile

My sis has Maine coons which were very expensive as well as I would expect but that for a moggie?

£50 is an entirely reasonable price.

NorthernDramaLlama · 14/09/2021 21:17

£60, included neutering and chip, from Cat charity.

PlanetTeaTime · 14/09/2021 21:18

I paid £550 each for my cats but they are pedigree.

I think £50 is really reasonable I think it's more if you go through a charity. If you can't afford £50 for a cat how are you going to take care of them?

Lennybenny · 14/09/2021 21:19

I know they cost money that's why I don't want to pay loads. I have 2 cats already. I'm happy to pay but what are you paying for.....a moggie gets pregnant, apart from good food, milk etc for her and eventuallyfood for them, the kittens don't cost you £100 each. Rescue centres are different obviously.

I paid £250 ( ie 125 each) for 2 ginger boys in July. For gingers, they were on the cheaper side. I agree it is a lot of money but even my local rescues, who would not let me adopt, were asking £80 per kitten.

PlanetTeaTime · 14/09/2021 21:19

Sorry I should say I don't mean you affording it personally, I just mean people in general

Dolphinnoises · 14/09/2021 21:21

If it’s from a rescue, and chipped / neutered, £100 is reasonable. We were given our kitten and spent at least that on doing all that. If none of that is done and it’s a moggy, call your local vet and say you’d like one. They put a depressing number of healthy kittens down each year.

hartof · 14/09/2021 21:28

Depends if it's the right kitten. We paid £95 for our tuxedo cat that was 3 years ago. We paid £280 for our tabby but he's grey and white with very strong markings and it was last October. We wouldn't have been allowed a cat from a rescue due to our location and having a child but I think if we would I would've donated £100.

Undertheoldlindentree · 14/09/2021 21:33

£125 from RSPCA (included neutering). I wouldn't buy a kitten from a private home.

icedcoffees · 14/09/2021 21:35

All mine were £10 from local farm litters.

MyMabel · 14/09/2021 21:35

How much do you expect to buy a family pet for? Confused £50 in my opinion is too cheap. They’re animals not toys. The sellers will want to ensure they’re going to loving home and not being used for dog bait which is surprisingly common.

Hopeisallineed · 14/09/2021 21:35

I live up north, very rurally, cats are still given away free up here! 😂

TippledPink · 14/09/2021 21:38

Kittens are at least £200 on private ads local sites near me. Just for regular kittens. Cheaper if going through a rescue.

mumboss1984 · 14/09/2021 21:40

We just paid £900 for a kitten but she is a Maine Coon.

Wolfiefan · 14/09/2021 21:43

Unless it was a pedigree there is no way I would get a kitten from anywhere other than a rescue. People are deliberately choosing not to spay and neuter and then flogging off the kittens for the highest price they can. I wouldn’t give money to people like that.

Evenstar · 14/09/2021 21:44

My pure white kitten cost me £350, in the south east you can easily pay £200 or more for “ordinary” colours, grey or white are always more. I honestly think £50 is too cheap for all the reasons PP have said. I bought from a friend whose cat had a lockdown litter due to not being able to get her neutered, but rightly she charged the going rate for them as if you under price there is a risk of them being taken by dog fighting gangs etc.

It’s shocking to me too as I grew up in a very rural area where kittens were given away.
