Indoor cat breed help

We sadly lost our cat almost 2 years ago & are now starting to think about getting another. Since then we have moved house, our garden is small & we live on a busy road so we are thinking of keeping them predominantly indoors (although they will have access to the garden & we are looking at making it a safe, escape free area). We also now have a DC so would like one that is family friendly and can handle being around children. Can anyone recommend a happy to be indoors, family friendly breed?

We have a Siberian. Wonderful indoor cats if you have enough space and can arrange sufficient entertainment. Ours has a catio on the balcony which Che enjoys and will occasionally allow us to put her lead on and go for a walk in the rest of the garden.

Many bred cats would have been selected for docility and home contentness (if such word exist?). I have provided a forever home to previously breeding cats (siamese, balines, etc) and they were lovely and content indoors. They do go out on small garden and eat some grass (throwing up immediatly afterwords...), but no more than that.

Agree with @JohnLapsleyParlabane go for a Siberian.

We have a 5 month old and she is absolutely adorable Smile Great personality and friendly yet chilled vibes.

Loves the harness and goes out into the garden for 10-15 minutes. Comes back in when she has had enough. Took her out via the kitchen door and nearly a week later rememebered to come back to the door on her next outing Very intelligent.

I mean all cats are extraordinary but just sharing my Siberian love, is all Grin

Here she is just back after a little walk

We've always kept our cats indoors. We've had ragdolls, maine coons and British short hairs mostly. We had lots of toys, tall climbing frames, water fountains in the house for them so they don't get bored. Then we built a run for them so they could go out into the garden.

Toddlerteaplease · 06/09/2021 13:30

Persian! They are the absolute best. Short and long haired models available!

Exotic shorthair, my lovely girl passed over the rainbow bridge a couple of years ago but she was the most sweetest natured cat ever, common for the breed.
My dd was her favourite person as we got her when dd was 2 and they grew up together.

Our two Maine Coons were happy to live indoors.

Our experience of Maine Coons are that they have their own brand of humour, eg our boy cat used to 'dress up' for attention (getting under rugs or wrapping himself in bag straps). They tend to hang around nearby rather than being lap cats. They were both great with my daughter (who was always gentle with them) but would be rather wary with strange and noisy children who were a bit too interested! They were extremely gentle though.

They became quite talkative (we encouraged this), and would answer from another room if we called their names. Amusingly small voices though, for big cats!

They were easy to care for - we had no trouble clipping their claws, administering medication or grooming them, having trained them well from kittens! If they're kept with their mother until 12-13 weeks old, you're very unlikely to get problems with clawing laps or scratching furniture/carpets - ours were extremely well-behaved in this regard. The only issues were the fine fur that sticks to clothes, and a few carpet stains from hairballs.

Ragdolls. They're very sweet and chatty, cuddly, playful and loving. This is ours. ❤️

I have three moggies who are all perfectly content to live indoors.

PrincessConsuela12 · 06/09/2021 17:18

Thank you all & thank you for the photos, they are all extremely cute 😻 our first cat was a bengal somali cross & such a character, I miss him daily 💙

I love the thought of taking him / her out for a walk, a friend of mine used to have a cat who loved going for a walk in their harness.

DC is only 2yo but loves her GP cat, she's very gentle with her so I can't imagine they'll be any problems 🤞🏽 it's an exciting time, we've missed having a furry friend around the house but I also feel bad that I'm taking this next step, almost as though I'm replacing our first cat.

I'm going to start looking into them all now & do some research. Thank you all again 💐

I had 2 moggies from kitten hood. They were indoor cats from 1yo for the same reason. They were 16 and 18 when euthanised. Currently rescued 2 raggies and other than the garden, on a lead about 4 times in 4 months, they are house cats. They don’t have to be breeds, you can rescue

PrincessConsuela12 · 06/09/2021 17:47

Thank you @LittleMissnotLittleMrs, I'm happy to go for a moggy, I just wasn't sure if there were any specific breeds that preferred to be indoors. Our cat was a bit of a hunter & enjoyed being outside so the concept is a little alien to me but after losing him in the way we did (on a quiet street) I won't risk getting another with the busy road we now live on now

I went for an older rescue, she’s 10/11 (owned by a man and you know what their like for dates) and she likes food, fuss, dreamies and playing.

Trinacham · 06/09/2021 17:54

Ragdolls! I have 2. They are so affectionate, want to be with us all the time, cuddly and laidback. They don't fare well as outdoor cats either so ideal for you.

Subbaxeo · 06/09/2021 18:02

Ragdolls make lovely house cats and are very docile. My cat is an ex breeding Bengal but I wouldn’t recommend Bengals as house cats. Before I got mine, I read lots of stories of behaviour problems, but my Bengal is no problem-but she’s allowed out and she loves it. A lot of people keep them as house cats but they’re very active and need constant stimulation indoors. We almost got an Australian Mist-beautiful, playful and docile and the breeder said they make wonderful indoor cats.

moynomore · 06/09/2021 18:04

Maine coon.

@Trinacham @WFHWF A family member has ragdolls & recommended them, they're beautiful. Do they shed a lot of hair or is it manageable with regular brushing?

@Subbaxeo I agree, ours would've hated being kept in. We had no problems with him & wouldn't hesitate in getting another if we had the outside space.

CovidCorvid · 06/09/2021 18:28

Birman. Mine is like a cuddly puppy.

Wolfiefan · 06/09/2021 18:28

I would go for an adult rescue that was used to being an indoor cat.

CovidCorvid · 06/09/2021 18:31

This is him..
Birman are meant to shed less hair than ragdolls. And I think need less brushing, I only brush him once in a blue moon.

Oh god, ignore one of the photos. Blush. I clicked the wrong one, deleted it, shut the thread down to make sure, came back and it's still there.
