My Daphne is not very well. I just know it

I feel sick thinking about it. I’m on my way home from holiday and the cat sitter text to say she was shocked at how thin she had got. Four weeks ago she had her annual check up and had lost 250 grams in a year. We put it down to the weather etc. She’s been having that new Felix and I noticed she was having the runs but I do t think it’s that. She was ok then just as I was going away she got the ribs again on the kitchen floor and started throwing up clear fluid. The vomit was a one off but she still has a runny bum. And is drinking a lot. She’s 5 can my baby have cancer? I’ve rang the emergency vet and the receptionist said it’s £90 and I can’t claim off my Pet Plan until I’ve spent £500 🤔 wt actual f? Can they do that? It’s Medivet which have I have always used specifically because they work with Pet Plan and once you pay the £90 that’s it they automatically claim direct. I don’t know what to do I’m dreading going home and seeing her. She’s eating very well and there’s no blood. Shall I buy some anti allergic food on my way home and take her on Tuesday when I’m off?

I don't know, Each. I did want to send love and best wishes to both of you though Flowers.

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 13:44

I’ve been desperate to get on the train I hope she’s ok but I can’t see a good outcome if I’m honest. I have dared to go away twice on a month and she hates it when I’m not there but I do t think she would go this far.

I hope the vet can help her quickly. I know you're worried and I hope you get answers soon. Flowers

Want2beme · 30/08/2021 15:05

Don't jump the gun, Each, it could be something very straightforward. If you're very worried, take her as soon as possible, but if she's eating and drinking and you can get an appointment tomorrow first thing with your own vet, then do that. I think you'll know how to react as soon as you see her. The emergency charge is standard. I paid more than that when I lived in the UK. I'm afraid I don't know anything about claiming back from insurance.

Hope she gets better very soonFlowers

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 15:33

I’m still not home but just went to Waitrose and bought some very bland food which I know she won’t eat unless I put abit of lik e lix on it so I’m cheating already 😃 and as soon as I get in I’ll boil all the litter trays and we will start from scratch. I’m sure it can’t have anything to do with the vaccines can it? It did start then.

Get her off Felix its been making some cats ill even my sisters cats began vomiting on it

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 15:39

Yes I stopped it before I went away on Friday

Hope she is better.

Lunde · 30/08/2021 15:48

Get her checked at the vet.

Had a similar issue last week with our 14 year old cat - loss of weight, grumpy, loose poo. Went to the vet and she is diagnosed with with hyperthyroidism.

Weight loss + drinking could also be diabetes

With pet insurance you usually choose the excess that you pay before insurance kicks in - we chose a lower excess of £200 but we pay a slightly higher premium.

ShowOfHands · 30/08/2021 15:54

My little girl cat has been poorly recently and in our case, it coincides 100% with buying Felix. Taking her off it has stopped the vomiting and lethargy overnight. But I think gradual weight loss and the symptoms you're seeing absolutely need taking seriously and no assumptions made. I really hope all is well.

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 15:56

I know but they were specifically saying I had to spend £500 then to claim it back. I think she’s making a fool of me. You see from her back end I can see a more defined waist she’s not andrexic I’m thinking I can wait until I’m off on Wednesday?

if you feel that the cat is unwell then she needs to go to the vet, no one can really advise on here. My cat stopped eating earlier in the year, I initially thought it was the heat, turned out to be heart failure and he died a few weeks later, he was 8 years old.
Check with your insurer to see what they say, but irrespective of what the limits are, if she needs the vet then she needs the vet.

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 16:21

It’s not about limits it’s about the emergency vet changing the rules when they are the same company it’s £90 access at the normal vet then they claim direct at the emergency they are saying yes it’s £90 excess however you have to spend up to £500 before we will start claiming it direct before then u pay and do it yourself. It’s completely different and I’m shocked at why it would be both medivet. Anyway that’s by the by, I’ve just walked in off to investigate the litter trays now

Find another vet, it's ridiculous they say you have to spend £90

Or you could claim direct to PetPlan and have the money go to you rather than the vet claim

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 17:03

No the excess is £90 but then u have to spend £500 claim that yourself back then they will claim direct for you. At my usual vet u spend £90 then they claim immediately. Both vets are the same company medivet.

I'll bet good money it's the food.

It can take a good few weeks for them to feel better again.

Vinorosso74 · 30/08/2021 20:05

Oh no. Why do these happen on a bank holiday? I think different Medivet branches seem to have different policies on insurance from my own experience.
I would see how she is once you've been home a while and definitely call the vet if you're worried but could still be worth a check up. Get well soon Daphne.
We're stuck around here as Medivet seem to have the monopoly on vet practices now (they've bought independents but kept the old names outside) especially 24 hours and the one that isn't is owned by a Mars company!

EachandEveryone · 30/08/2021 20:08

I know its the same in my part of North London too. I dont find them brilliant tbh. I suspect they are all underpaid. When on earth can we start going in with our pets?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 31/08/2021 10:01

How is Daph?

Oldraver · 31/08/2021 21:27

Sorry I wrote that wrong , I meant it's not on they say you have to spend £500

Is she any better ? Has she seen the vet yet ?

EachandEveryone · 01/09/2021 10:12

First appointment is on Thursday so we are going then. Shes eating well and i have her on plain chicken. Her poo is still runny and smelly. She has lost weight at her back end so I will be asking for bloods.

I looked at the policy and it says the vet can directly e bill them after £95 so I dont know why Medivet have suddenly said its at the discretion of the vet. I pay £700 a year for them both for this very reason. Thats how medivet sell Petplan to you.

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/09/2021 11:27

Can you complain to Petplan? People will be dropping them like hotcakes if this becomes common.

I'm guessing that Daph is just having a reaction to the new Felix and it might take her a while to build up her gut again. Fingers crossed that I'm right.

EachandEveryone · 01/09/2021 12:03

I’m hoping so. Now I have to find a food she will find palatable

OP posts:
YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/09/2021 12:05

There is an active thread about this.

Felix have really stuffed a lot of cats and people around.
