WARNING Felix - Purina Cat food

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 08:39

Just thought I would let people know who might have had trouble with their cats not eating the new recipe Felix food. There have been a lot of cats either refusing the food or getting quite ill after eating their food, and most thankfully recovering when different food is fed.

There has been no recall yet but if your cat is ill or not eating might be worth a look.

Here is a link to a Facebook group for more info.

Interesting. Dcat is off her food (Felix). I am going to buy some whiskers this morning. Any other suggestions for previous Felix eaters?

Branleuse · 19/07/2021 08:41

thats interesting. My cats used to love Felix and have recently been funny about it and it smells different.
Considering felix was one of the very few things they would eat its pretty annoying

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 08:44

Other people in the group have switched to Whiskers, Sheba, Iams, Blink, James wellbeloved, Hi-life and raw diet etc. I think people are trying lots of different food to see what their fussy eaters will eat.

Damn just bought four of the largest boxes. Assumed it was the heat putting them off.
Is it just felix or all purina brands?

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 08:48

People have reported issues with all their products. It could just be the heat at the moment, but some have had issues since the Jan 2021.

Bugger. Five fussy cats and a hunt for cat food. Oh well.
Thank you for the heads up. Much appreciated!

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 09:02

I know it so annoying, I just returned 5 boxes to pets at home, retailers will accept returns of un opened boxes. A few have accepted open boxes too, but I wouldn't bank on it.

This is entirely anecdotal with NO real evidence to say there is a problem.

The facebook site you reference does not allow you to say your cats are quite happy still eating Felix, it only allows people to complain.

Felix may have changed their receipe with the new packaging (I have no idea if they have or not) but my cats are all still very happily scoffing it without any change.

A big upper case WARNING is completely inappropriate here.

It is all circumstantial, but a lot of the cats have had medical tests all clear and the only thing different was the food.

The group does allow people to state that their cats have been fine, which is great as it can narrow down any issues with particular batches.

Agree with the previous PP - my (very fussy) boy would only eat Felix, and will still happily scoff it (last box, new packaging, bought Saturday)..

Not sure this deserves a warning, though I do wish manufacturers wouldn't fiddle with recipes!

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2021 09:28

Admin rule number 2 on the site states
Don't come on here saying you have not had a problem or you'll just be blocked and removed from the group.

EverythingDelegated · 19/07/2021 09:30

Mine are still eating it very happily too, but will keep an eye on things.

JoanOgden · 19/07/2021 09:32

Cats going off food because the recipe has changed or because they are cats or looking a bit off colour but getting a clean bill of health from the vet is a REALLY different situation from the awful Pancytopenia casualties.

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 09:33

I have seen a posters on there that have no issues.

It's not my group, I don't make the rules. I just I wanted to give a heads up in case anyone has any issues.

Your cat has been fine with the food and that's great, but many others have not and have become very ill.

I am not trying to scaremonger, but I would rather know if there is a problem. Even if the company won't admit it.

StartingGrid · 19/07/2021 09:34

Agree with PP, trying to make this sound on par with the dry food/pancytopenia outbreak is not particularly helpful. Ive multiple cats on felix standard and senior, none have refused their food or gotten ill.

Branleuse · 19/07/2021 09:41

i wasnt sure if it was just felix as theres a few cat foods my cats used to be ok with but wont eat it at the moment. I remember recently asking friends if anyone else had the issue. I wondered if quality of pet food had gone down in general, as wasnt there a brexit shortage at one point. Maybe everythings being cheapened
They didnt like whiskas much anyway and still dont, nor sheba. They used to be ok with wilkos and aldi and asda cat food, but wont eat these now either. Will eat aldis luxury one at the moment, but ive got so much bloody cat food to get through now that they just turn their noses up

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2021 09:42

@Whatamesssss
You are claiming there is a link where there is NO evidence.
One of my cats has just had a urinary problem, he eats Felix. Are the two related? No they are not.

Oh but if I put this on a dodgy facebook site everyone will add this to the problems 'caused' by Felix.

Whatamesssss · 19/07/2021 09:46

I said that there is strong circumstantial evidence. There have been many products that were deemed safe until they weren't.

Obviously all problems cannot be attributed to one thing, but when so many have had the same experience, it does need investigating.

I can't see the Facebook page as I don't have Facebook, but my cat also stopped eating Felix food (as good as it gets) when we bought a new box, and became very lethargic and vomited. My cat has only been with us for a month so I had kept her on Felix intially as recommended by the rescue place. Normally she loves eating, so this was very unusual, and it was before the very hot weather.
Thankfully I saw the comments about the new recipe, and changed her food over to a different food, and within a day she was back to normal. I know it's anecdotal, and not at all serious like the Pancytopenia condition, but it was quite sudden. It may not be the Felix food, and I haven't reported it, but my cat's symptoms seem to fit with the online reports.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 19/07/2021 09:48

I said that there is strong circumstantial evidence
And this is where you and I differ. A few anecdotes on a Facebook site isn't strong circumstantial data.

It's not a few, it's thousands.

I have 4 cats
They used to love Felix and all of them have gone off it recently. Even eating whiskas when previously they didn’t touch it.
All been well though so no idea if there is a link or they’ve changed recipe

OriginalTaste · 19/07/2021 10:06

Just want to add - OP thank you for bringing it to our attention, always worth knowing if there is a link, however anecdotal.

Don't think this should become a 'have a go at the OP' thread, they're just passing on info

Just like the info about 5G masts causing cancer and chips in vaccines. Loads of anecdotal evidence for those too...

Thank you. I did hesitate to post as I knew I would get attacked, but thought people should be aware.

I don't know if it's the Purina food, it may not be, but with so many having sickness and diarrhoea and then hundreds in vet bills and then cats are fine after changing their food, it doesn't sound like a coincidence to me.

I really hope it's not the food, as mine love it, but after one of mine became ill, I stopped the agail and he is back to his old self.
