WARNING Felix - Purina Cat food

Just thought I would let people know who might have had trouble with their cats not eating the new recipe Felix food. There have been a lot of cats either refusing the food or getting quite ill after eating their food, and most thankfully recovering when different food is fed.

There has been no recall yet but if your cat is ill or not eating might be worth a look.

Here is a link to a Facebook group for more info.

Exactly! Well said. I would rather be made aware of a possible issue so that I can monitor my cats' eating habits and toilet habits.

MJHP · 21/09/2021 02:19

My cat stopped eating 3 days ago. He loves whiskas, but will not eat it. So tried soups and a sachet of felix and he scoffed it down. Not sure what’s going on

IsEveryUserNameBloodyTaken · 24/09/2021 00:18

I think the issue was with the new Felix.
My cats have been on Felix as Good as It looks nearly all of their lives.
I didn’t even notice the new packaging that’s how observant I am and didn’t even know anything had changed, till my cats either refused to eat it or just licked the jelly off.
I couldn’t understand why they both suddenly developed diarrhoea as they don’t go out and nothing had changed.
They then started being sick.I still didn’t think it was to do with the food.
I ended up having to take both to the vets who told me they were seeing many cases in the last few weeks of exactly the same symptoms and other things of cats eating Felix food.
I’ve changed to a different brand and obviously as well as no symptoms they seem more full of life and playful.I did notice they seemed to sleep a lot,I just put that down to the weather.
I was looking at that Facebook group the other day cats Recently Affected By Felix, wish I had come across that group earlier,it would have saved me a few hundred in vet bills

Oh and I was speaking to a friend who helps run a cat rescue. She said officially they have not put anything on their Facebook page, but are aware of the issues after some of their donated food which was Felix was causing problems. They have stopped feeding all Felix and only mention when people come to donate that they are currently not taking any donations of Felix at this current time.

Hello,
We swapped off Felix in the summer because Dcat no longer liked it suddenly after eating it ever since we got her as a rescue 8 years ago.
She is still not eating well, and the vet says she has lost 500g in the last year.
Nothing has turned up on blood tests. Heart, liver, kidneys, IBS, allergies all clear.
Anyone had anything similar?
We have been feeding her cooked chicken which she eats, maybe I should give up on cat food.

CatMel · 08/10/2021 11:24

trumpisagit - I've changed my cats food to Feringa cat food and Smilla cat food to see how they get on. They seem to really like them. So I'd suggest you try Zooplus online for cat food. It's free delivery when you spend a certain amount of money.

Photosymphysis · 08/10/2021 17:18

Hello,

I've found myself here after elderly cat having a not-great prognosis from the vet following 24hrs of vomiting.

She's got some swelling/lumps in her gastrointestinal tract. Vet is not optimistic but thinks steroids will make her feel better for a few weeks. It's endgame territory.

She's lost a lot of weight this year. We thought it was just age. She's been really, really fussy too.

I've just read the first few posts here about purina foods. We've tried a whole load of them but what's acceptable one day isn't the next. But we'll now avoid purina/felix.

Any other suggestions would be great. She's 18, and apart from being thin and a bit vommy is active and alert and seems mostly happy as usual.

Photosymphysis · 08/10/2021 17:39

DH just came back with some Lily's and she's wolfed half a tray thing of a pate one. (Gave half for smaller puke piles 🙄).

Is Lily's ok?

stirling · 08/10/2021 19:50

Really appreciate threads like this. Better forewarned.
I hear purina being mentioned but does this only apply to felix cat food or little tins of purina gold? Which is what I buy for my kitten...

And what are the alternatives worth trying please?
Thank you

Hi, I'm not a Mum but saw your message. Just to say that Felix have started making a cat food with liver in it. My vet said liver is very bad for cats and even poisonous sometimes. Do check that any cat food you give your cats doesn't have liver in it. Some say you can give the odd bit of liver but it's dangerous I feel and says on the internet that it's very bad and can be poisonous for cats.

Our rescue became very sick on purina and Felix products. We'd only had him a week or so. As soon as I took him off the food he started to improve, thank god. I notified the rescue as it was them who said he needed felix agail.. I also notified amazon as I'd bought a massive box of food from them and was worried it might have been a dodgy batch. They refunded me the full amount which I was not expecting.

Photosymphysis · 19/12/2021 20:25

Hello, I've come back to update.

When DCat was very ill in October the vet said it was either some horrible peritoneal thing that would kill her in a fortnight, was most likely an intestinal cancer that would kill her in a few more weeks, or, very unlikely, some IBD-type thing.

We declined the biopsies and scans, she's ancient already and we weren't about to put her through chemo or anything.

So we started on steroids expecting her to perk up but decline a little slower than she had been.

But here we are. She's fine. She's put half a kilo back on, regained her lost condition and the intestinal lumps are gone.

He thinks it could be an IBD type thing. We've already reduced the steroids but will reduce them further now too to avoid Cushings.

Maybe it was purina food that causes the inflammation? We'll never know. But she's not going back on it!

@Photosymphysis Always good to see a happy update, thanks for coming back to post Flowers

TheVanguardSix · 19/12/2021 21:03

My cats eat Felix and Whiskas without a fuss but last week, they wouldn’t touch the Whiskas pouches I normally buy. They’re totally fine with Felix!

Whatamesssss · 21/12/2021 09:55

@Photosymphysis

That's wonderful news. So glad your cat is feeling better.

All 4 of my cats have gone off Felix after 12 years!….and 1 cat I’m particular has been quite ill Now I am wasting money trying different foods as 1 of the other cats is so fussy! I have emailed Purina and explained it all and advised them to keep the recipe as it was or people are simply not going to buy it anymore and they have asked me to send a couple of pouches to them to try and get my money back but they probably won’t reimburse me!

Joojoo5 · 24/01/2022 11:16

They have sent me £15 vouchers for THEIR products! They’ve gone straight in the bin!!

Is Lily's ok?

No as it is now owned by Purina one one fo the ones to avoid

I have three indoor cats who have always eaten purina one, felix and gourmet gold. About five months ago they started getting awful diarrhoea. Their coats lost their lustre, they were over grooming and vomiting.
I read about this and immediately stopped feeding it. All those symptoms have now gone and they’re back to normal .
