I accidently stole a cat

I accidently stole a cat. The cat started to visit me at the start of first lockdown and I think he may of been about 6months old. He was full of fleas, had worms (I could see them in his poo) and kept stealing food off my kitchen side. We have a lot of strays in the area. I put a paper coller on him and no one rang. I flead, wormed and started feeding him. He was a scrapper, got injured so I took him to the vet. No chip, so vet chipped him to me and I paid about £300 in vets bills. I thought nothing of it and accepted that I now have a cat (I couldn't leave it out injured and PDSA wouldn't see him during the pandemic as not life threatening). I'm not a cat person and am actually allergic to them. Anyway, turns out the cat did have a home (found out through friends a couple of months later and owner had proof) so I hand delivered him back to his actual owner along with chip details and change over ownership forms. The owner did not offer to reimburse me vets fees but I didn't really mind as he needed treatment. Cat still visited multiple times a day, slept in the shed overnight but I did not feed him (to encourage him to not visit).

Fast forward a couple of months, I have a call from a vets who say they have my injured cat.....erm I don't have a cat anymore but it turns out I do as the actual owner didn't change the details over (I should have checked tbf) so I contacted owner to explain about the cat in the vet. They reluctantly agreed that I could keep the cat as he seems to prefer it here but owner was really upset. I had him treated, vaccinated and neutered and now he never leaves the house, he's like my shadow. But I feel so so bad that I have essentially stolen someone's cat (twice) and I'm finding it hard to bond with him because of the guilt (silly I know as its been nearly a year since he officially came).

If they can’t chip, neuter, worm, flea and seek vet care for their own cat then stuff them.

He’s better off with you. They had two chances and did nothing, they don’t care that much.

If my cat went missing and I got him back the first thing I’d do is make sure they were chipped to me. Stuff them, enjoy your cat :)

MangoBiscuit · 10/07/2021 11:48

Doesn't sound like you stole him at all. Sounds like he was being neglected, and you were there for him. Given the choice, he chose you. If his previous owner is upset, tough shit, they should have looked after him properly in the first place.

MikeWozniaksGloriousTache · 10/07/2021 11:49

It doesn’t seem like they give a shit about that cat other than “I’m upset because I like it but not enough to provide the basic care for it”.

He’s better off with you, don’t feel bad.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 10/07/2021 11:50

They were crap owners. Poor dcat was neglected.. Even when they got it back they didn't change the chip details!! Says it all imo.
Keep your dcat close... Extra spoiling food wise will keep him with you...

VettiyaIruken · 10/07/2021 11:50

Don't feel guilty. Feel happy that you have saved a cat from a lifetime of neglect!
They clearly don't give much of a shit about the welfare of the cat.

Oldraver · 10/07/2021 11:52

They don't deserve a cat treating him like that

Cat knows where it's best off

Bryterlayter1 · 10/07/2021 11:52

Don't feel guilty, the other person could have changed the chip details at any point (at no cost). Sounds like they were more than a bit ambivalent about owning the cat.

Notapheasantplucker · 10/07/2021 11:55

Don't feel bad, it sounds as though he was neglected. Poor thing. You've done a really kind thing, not a lot of people would have.

christyt114 · 10/07/2021 11:57

Cats choose their owners. Your cat didn't like his original owner because they weren't looking after him properly.

He prefers you so he's yours.

I don't understand the guilt. It sounds like the previous owner was a terrible owner and I hope they don't get any more cats!

Datsandcogs · 10/07/2021 11:58

Initially you inadvertently acquired a cat. Cat whose original owners were neglectful, so the cat upgraded to you. You gave proper care and acted responsibly in returning him. They continued with their neglect and finally you got your cat back. Don’t feel guilty for your acquisition, he’s clearly happy and well cared for.

PS I don’t think you own him, he’s chosen you to be his minion!

wigjuice · 10/07/2021 12:00

That cat and you belong together, he came into your life for a reason, don't feel guilty about giving him a warm beautiful life, his previous owner should never be allowed a pet again.

30degreesandmeltinghere · 10/07/2021 12:00

Op you are The Chosen One.
Accept your fate.
Congratulations on your new post as Dcat Slave
..
I trust you will serve him well.

SometimesIFeedTheSparrows · 10/07/2021 12:01

Surely when the cat was in the vets, injured, they had the chance to offer to pay the bill and have the cat back? If you hadn't had him chipped, the vet wouldn't have had any owner to contact so would have handed him off to be rehomed anyway.

We have an unneutered tom that comes round and torments our cats and the local cat charity have said if I can catch it and it's not chipped and no one comes forward to claim it then they will neuter and rehome- if the owners can't be arsed to neuter and chip then that's their lookout. The cat shouldn't suffer. Sounds like your cat was suffering too.

MemyselfandI2019 · 10/07/2021 12:26

Thank you for your lovely replies, I know I shouldn't feel guilty. I think it's because the thought of someone stealing one of my pets fills be with horror and I presume all people must feel like that!! Plus our neutral friend thinks I did the wrong thing and should have kept my beak out - we're no longer friends. He's gone from one of the neighbourhood bullies to the daftest cat since having his manhood chopped, he's such a funny but still a very vocal boy.

Sorry, don't know how to tag people but yes you are right. I am not his owner, I am most definitely his slave. So much so in fact I named him The King 🤣🤣.

I think I have a lot to learn about being The King's slave

You rescued him from owners that didn’t give a chuff and who didn’t have enough money to pay for required flea and worm treatments.

He chose you to be his cat guardian. He’s free to go wherever he wants and he’s choosing you.

Did you say you now have proof of ownership? I imagine that would be good to have in case they try anything.

Ahah I worked out how to quote! I do indeed, they never changed the chip details over. I then rang pet log as soon as they said I could keep him to block them changing the details

They didn’t deserve the cat if they neglected him, the cat had the situation sussed hence why he’s now yours!

Suzi888 · 10/07/2021 12:35

^ this Plus some antihistamines! Cats choose their owners, so puss has spoken! It doesn’t sound like the other owner cares for the cat properly Sad
AlfonsoTheMango · 10/07/2021 12:35

He is morally and legally your cat, OP. You did the right thing and have given an unloved, uncared for cat a loving home.

Reallyreallyborednow · 10/07/2021 12:37

Also if they really cared for the cat they’d have been all over social media trying to find him? You’d had him months and no lost cat post on facebook? That’s the whole point of local groups!!

No local flyers? Any attempt at all?

Cat goes missing and isn’t chipped the only way you’ll get it back is to hope someone sees a poster or fb post.

Soubriquet · 10/07/2021 12:38

That cat was severely neglected and you didn’t steal him you rescued him.

Enjoy being a cat slave

custardbear · 10/07/2021 12:42

Just to reiterate others, you don't deserve a cat if you allow others to deflea, worm, feed your cat ... they neglected him and you're his saviour ... well slaviour anyway 😋

Clarkey86 · 10/07/2021 12:44

We did a realllyyyy similar thing. Really neglected little black cat kept coming to our house, fleas and starving (not just that pretend hunger like cats tend to do!). Used to come and meow all night at the door in the pouring rain so we put a box and jumper outside as a shelter, which she slept in most nights. Eventually figured out the owners, went to explain that their cat was basically living in our garden and they effectively told us they didn’t give a damn and it’d come back when it wanted to.

We moved out a few weeks later and she came with us.

Wolfiefan · 10/07/2021 12:47

I hate it when people steal cats. By that I mean enticing them into their houses with food and treats. Making no effort to find out if the cat has an owner.
You did NOT steal the cat. You found a clearly neglected cat and tried to find its owners. You got it treatment and looked after it.
You found out it had a home and returned it.
Then they decided they CBA with it and don’t want to pay vet bills. (Rubbish was it because they thought it was happier with you. They clearly didn’t care a bit about that cat’s happiness or even its basic needs.)
I think you’ve done a lovely thing. That cat has been so lucky to find you and I’m not surprised he doesn’t want to leave your side. You must seem like an angel who has improved his life in every single way.
May you both have many happy years together. Flowers

DSGBT · 10/07/2021 12:57

No one owns a cat, they own and choose you! My cat regularly visits another house as I think he likes to escape the kids for a bit (can’t blame him!) but he always comes back each day and we pay his insurance, he’s chipped, neutered, goes the vets as needed and is flea treated and wormed, wouldn’t dream of leaving him without those things. They have done nothing for this cat, keep him and enjoy him!
