How vocal is your cat?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 07/07/2021 02:21

Do they talk to you, and you understand what they are saying? And vice versa?

Obviously not in the English language, but something that just 'works' for both of you.

I'm sure mine do. How about you?

Mine doesn’t say much unless she wants some Dreamies. Then, she cackles. She’ll also mew a bit if wanting a cuddle.

Couldhavebeenme2 · 07/07/2021 03:24

I grew up with siamese so I'm fully aware of the feline capacity for noise, but apparently wrongly thought it was just the oriental breeds that were so vocal.

Nope, my dickhead bsh second-hand rescue mog is as loud as they come, and apparently 3.15am is a good time for him to announce his soggy presence at my bedside, having heard him proclaim his arrival all the way up from the cat flap.

Thank god he's a handsome bugger.

warmfluffytowels · 07/07/2021 07:09

All mine are chatty.

Fat cat meows when you dare interrupt his many naps Hmm or when I stop him from his latest habit of jumping up directly into a plate of food Grin

Girl cat meows to ask for a cuddle! She squeaks and if I say "well, come on then!" she runs over and jumps on my knee 🥰

Boy kitten is very vocal. He screams a lot for no apparent reason, screams for food, cuddles and fuss! He's probably got some oriental in him judging by the shape of his head and his body type, though.

ChubbyCat · 07/07/2021 08:32

I have two cats. Chubby cat meows in the mornings when she wants food and if you disturb her naps.
Skinny cat could also be called chatty cat, she is very noisy! She usually starts the day at 6 am by meowing behind the bedroom door for food. Whenever I go to the kitchen throughout the day she turns up and demands for more food, which she then refuses to eat. She also makes this chirpy noise whenever she walks into the room and sees you, if she jumps or is about to jump somewhere, when she is playing... just constantly! She sounds like a little alien!

violetbunny · 07/07/2021 08:55

Both will meow quite a bit, especially when they want something.

One is more "articulate" than the other, and by that I mean he has very specific meows for various things, so nearly all of the time it's pretty clear to me what he wants. For example, he has different meows for:

  • wake up, Mum!
  • excitement
  • I REALLY don't like this
  • Play with me
  • Feed me
  • Come to bed
  • Hi mum, I see you!

He will also often use non verbal behaviour to tell me what he wants, e.g. will walk to his toy box when he wants playtime

YellowBellyCat · 07/07/2021 08:57

One talks nearly nonstop. He walks round the house talking to himself. Other cat I have never heard make a noise in her life, not even a purr.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/07/2021 08:58

Sybil is very vocal (and loud too). Miaows at you if you don't pick her up. Miaows at you after you've picked her up. Squawks when she comes in. Miaows to demand food. And yes, we have regular conversations with her. She also purrs very loudly on impact.
Lenny's MO (miaowus operandi?) is to walk into the living room, sit down in the middle of the carpet gaze adoringly at DS2 and then miaow at him, (expecting a response) so DS will play with him. Lenny also miaows in his sleep and has been known to wake himself up, after which he continues gently miaowing to himself.
Basil and Karl are slightly less vocal, but both will engage in conversation in the morning prior to feeding.

Grumpyoldpersonwithcats · 07/07/2021 09:01

Should mention that Basil is very good at 'silent miaows'.

AnnaMagnani · 07/07/2021 09:03

Silkycat is chatty. Ever since she was a kitten she has liked to announce her arrival in the room, what she wants, joining in conversation and in the morning she has a long chat with the birds.

Desertcat is loud. We can hear him from 3 gardens away and try to pretend he isn't fucking annoying. Sometimes it's obvious what he wants but mainly he just wants to be LOUD. It's an Arabian Mau thing.

torquewench · 07/07/2021 09:07

My ginger boy says "uuhh" whenever he jumps on the bed or sofa, (the same way Ive started making noises when I stand up or squat down). My longhair also announces his soggy 3.15 am arrival through the catflap and continues through the house to the bedroom. I like to think he's moaning about the shit weather and complaining that the other two have eaten all the Sheba.

Tomuch · 07/07/2021 09:09

Mr Grey. He is very vocal . He shouts in the night so loudly. It's normally let me in/out. Or he's winding my dog up. Growling at her saying your not passing if you try I will slap you .

Bonnie. Is very quite I'm not even sure I have heard het meowing

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 07/07/2021 09:27

Oh yes!

The Silent Miaow is very effective, isn't it?

Especially when they do it with their eyes shut tight for maximum pathos 😽

My boy cat has developed a miaow that sounds just like he's saying "hello" and he does it after being outside.

Both cats are very chatty. They both like to announce their arrival. Girl cat is much louder than boy cat.

Fluffycloudland77 · 07/07/2021 14:04

We’ve only had Puddy since Thursday & she’s getting louder every day.

She’s not as vocal as Bertie Bengal was & spends much more time sleeping.

Jayneisagirlsname · 07/07/2021 14:18

Maxi boy has 5 specific miaows:
My biscuit bowl is empty.
I see the chicken treats.
Open the door.
Stroke me while I eat.
Where is dd?

Tonks talks all the time, holding conversations, giving orders and checking where we are. Is she's not chatting, she's asleep!

Toddlerteaplease · 07/07/2021 14:20

Cheddar talks all the time. She has an opinion on everything. Magic used to be mute. But has started announcing her presence loudly. Grin

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 07/07/2021 14:22

She's very chatty indeed. And I am pretty sure she re-enacts things she has done during the day for my benefit, giving chase and so on.
She's a funny little thing, I adopted her as an 11 year old. She does such funny things.

NotMyCat · 07/07/2021 14:23

Never ever shuts up. Doesn't have an unspoken thought in his head Grin
"I'm hungry, I'm tired, I'm awake, there's a funny looking leaf outside, OMG there's a dog, can I have some more food, I want cuddles, not my cat is being naughty, is there any dreamies....."

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 07/07/2021 14:24

Spongecat is very chatty when she wants food, coming up the stairs at 3 or 4 in the morning. She is shouting, "mum, feed me". She chirrups quite a lot for different things. Often she will do the silent miaow, as she is lazy and CBA.

JorisBonson · 07/07/2021 14:25

Girl cat is half Bengal so she never shuts up. She can say "hello" and "help" (seriously!!)

Boy cat also likes a chat but in a much more whingy fashion, especially when he thinks he hasn't been fed for weeks.

SheldonandAmy · 07/07/2021 14:27

One of our cats Miaows only to wake you up, if shut in somewhere or sometimes at food times.

Our other cat is more vocal, she makes a lot of noise hunting from behind the window or playing, she also Miaows indignantly if you dare to pick her up.

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 07/07/2021 14:31

Got 2 part Bengals here so it’s pretty noisy. Chirrups mostly. But neither can enter a room without announcing it.
Our old tabby is basically silent. Bit odd actually Grin

ItsJustTheOneSwanActually · 07/07/2021 14:32

Oh and one sings really loudly in the late evening [grin[

Stormyequine · 07/07/2021 14:48

We have three. One is very quiet. He does a little purp noise as a greeting sometimes, and will ask to be picked up by standing on his back legs, but he never miaows. One is very vocal when she wants feeding, and will keep on at you until you give in and feed her. The other has taken to walking through the house miaowing loudly to announce his arrival. He will actually have a conversation if you talk back to him. They are all completely different.

SalsaLove · 07/07/2021 14:56

My girl is currently sitting in the garden meowing for me to join her. She also meows at the food bowl as I’m bringing it to her. She’s chats to the birds in the morning. My house was so quiet and peaceful before she arrived last year! 🥰
