How vocal is your cat?

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 07/07/2021 02:21

Do they talk to you, and you understand what they are saying? And vice versa?

Obviously not in the English language, but something that just 'works' for both of you.

I'm sure mine do. How about you?

Very chatty - much more so since lockdown last year because we have been working from home. As well as chatting to us she likes to sit at the kitchen table and make a sort of robot noise at the birds on the feeder on the garden wall - I work at that table and she is exactly level with my microphone.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/07/2021 22:59

I've just started a thread about this. Harry is taking singing lessons from the sodding Bengal* next door and practice time varies between 4.30 and 5.30 in the morning!

*The sodding Bengal is absolutely gorgeous but is corrupting my sweet and innocent Harry!

PangoPurrl · 07/07/2021 23:13

Dcat1 just does cute little random brrrrp noises, other than if he finds himself alone upstairs, when he'll yell until a hooman comes up for belly rubs or cuddles.
Dcat2 will yell if there is a closed door between him and us, if the hoomans are not both in the same room as he is, and especially to let us know that's it's at least 7 seconds since his bowl was topped up so he's starving and he's never experienced such cruel treatment or terrible service.
Did anyone guess that they're Siamese?! :-D

MrsCatE · 07/07/2021 23:41

BastardCat would have full on conversations with MrCat; I shit you not. The buggers understood each other perfectly.

ShowOfHands · 07/07/2021 23:43

Mine is silent. Not a purr or miaow to be had. She just looks at you if she wishes to communicate.

yeOldeTrout · 07/07/2021 23:53

Our recently deceased cat had a few specific meows:

"I caught something!"
"Let me in your room to sleep with you, pretty please?"
"FEED ME"

Remaining cat talks a lot since his brother died. His meows mean
"Stoppit.....zzzzz"
"I hate that other cat"
"I really super duper HATE that other cat"
"I want something. I haven't a clue what but sort it out"
"Let me in!!"

yeOldeTrout · 07/07/2021 23:55

oh... and remaining cat used to have a distinctive "Let me outside I need a poo" meow, but I don't discern it now.

christdoinghisunspecifiedhobby · 08/07/2021 00:01

Mine shouts hello he's looking for people. "Helloooo, helloooo?" he's very loud.

He also sits in the living room and barks at pigeons on the fence outside.

CluelessWriter · 08/07/2021 00:19

Edie will start the day with a volley of meow to ensure I know she needs breakfast immediately thank you very much.

She also has random loud meowing sessions usually about 10-10.30pm for no apparent reason. Sounds like she's on heat but she was done as a kitten so no idea what she's on about.

Piper likes to make a lot of noises whenever she moves like a grumpy old lady (although she's only 3). You can have an entire conversation with her in mrrrrps and she does the cutest little micro snores when she sleeps on her back.

irresistibleoverwhelm · 08/07/2021 00:27

We’ve had three cats and each has been different. First cat - aloof female tortie who hardly made a noise. Second cat - angry howly male cat with deep voice: lots of yowls but not many miaows. Third cat - female tabby, lots of friendly miaows all the time. Third cat is also a lap cat and likes cuddles!

louderthan · 08/07/2021 00:29

Mine is incredibly chatty all the time, to the point where it's irritating! I've had to mute numerous zooms because she won't shut up!
She had a huge vocal range but I can usually figure out what she wants.

Moonface123 · 08/07/2021 01:05

One of my cats meows for England. I have owned cats all my life but never had one as vocal as him. He does it morning , noon and night. His meows sounds more like a parrot squawking, and is very loud. He seems very needy, needs a lot of reassurance and attention, although he is seldom left alone. He walks around the house meowing, and outside too, one of the neighbours has complained, l can understand because he just repeatedy meows non stop. He is extremely loving and affectionate, and very intelligent for a cat. l have tried everything l can to get him out of this habit but after 7 years he s still the same. The vets say he has no medical issues, he's in good health. He is pure white with blue eyes, he isn't deaf and he has a brother who is ginger and very rarely meows,.( Thank the lord) He is always well fed, and has water aviailable, has a cat flap and receives alot of love and affection, he has toys, and the run of the house, we have a good sized garden. The only time he is quiet is when he's asleep. I just think this is how he is, and have accepted l have an extremely vocal cat.

DidSomebodySaySiamese · 08/07/2021 01:37

Brilliant chatty siamese boy. It would take less time to list what he does not talk about than what he does. He takes turns in conversation too. Shame he can’t quite fetch his toys back to my feet but returns them 3ft away with an expectant prrrreeep. Everything is just far enough away that fishing around with my leg outstretched is futile and I have to get up out of my chair.

@Fluffycloudland77 wait what? You have a new kitten/cat arrived last Thursday?

Providora · 08/07/2021 01:41

Mine is an oriental. It's hard to know when she's happy or otherwise because she uses the same long, LOUD, tortured howl for all communication.

She does a cute gurgling howl when she's being patted and her mouth is full of drool. She can also say a clear NOOOOO in response to being told to get off the kitchen counters. Or maybe she says NOOOOO to everything and I'm projecting Grin

IHaveBrilloHair · 08/07/2021 01:58

Only one of mine really talks, she loves a good chat though, she tells me all the gossip in the catty world.Grin

SteakChips · 08/07/2021 08:10

I have a Siamese who is chatty, and if I speak to him he will answer back, but I also have a moggy and she is soooooo vocal worse then the Siamese. Not only is she so vocal she likes to open doors and bring all her toys out to play with. She love 3am and they both come to life, running all over the house.

MrsRussell · 08/07/2021 08:29

Fat Boi has got a very distinctive shout that goes something like mmmrrrrYOOOOWWWWW, unless he is so hungry he can't even, in which case he just looks at you and opens his mouth pitifully.
Peach Cat quacks, which is weird, and his brother creaks.

Flank Tanker just never shuts up, in case you forget about him and send him back to the shelter, or something.

Kotatsu · 08/07/2021 08:43

Boy cat yells all the time. Much like the kids, rather than come and find one of us, he just stands where he is and loudly meows until we yell back to him. He also does it first thing in the morning when he feels I really should be out of bed by now..

Girl cat trills when she wants something/is excited to be getting something - me to open my office door, extra treats when her brother isn't there to steal them, me to hurry up and get in position so she can sit on my lap to be brushed etc. It's very cute.

WheresThatCatGoneNow · 08/07/2021 11:27

When I give my big girl Tabitha her Dreamies, I always say, "Crunch crunch, good girl."

She seems to understand and take notice of me, because she does crunch them properly (most of the time)

I've only started saying this, because she had a habit of swallowing them whole, which invariably had the result of her sicking them back up within five minutes.

I think the sharp corners must irritate her stomach...?Hmm

Yelling away as usual

How vocal is your cat?
AlfonsoTheMango · 08/07/2021 11:55

I love talkative cats.

IndiaMay · 08/07/2021 11:55

Mine is v chatty. When he comes in the catflap he sort of calls for us and we have to shout where we are in the house. Theres some back and forwards normally before we convince him to come to us. He also meows at us when it's raining out (like he blames us and wants us to stop it) and chats for food or water or a stroke. Hes very talkative

Beamur · 08/07/2021 12:00

One of mine does the silent miaow. Looks like she's putting in a lot of effort! She can purr quite loudly though.
My others vary. One shouts a bit when I am feeding her something nice her sister is a bit chattier but does something I haven't really come across before. Instead of a miaow it's more of a sigh or groan but highly expressive!

HippyChickMama · 08/07/2021 12:05

One has a very loud meow that he rarely uses and a quiet purr. The other one is a ragdoll cross and almost never meows but does chirp and will have a conversation with us, he also has a very loud purr. They are both quite vocal when looking for the other one

ZaraW · 09/07/2021 10:23

My cat is extremely vocal. We call her chatty cat. When she was being treated at the vets and had to stay in for four days the staff commented how she likes to talk (probably a polite way to say she's annoying). At 14 she's not going to change.
