Hi,
We have had our kittens for one week and they are booked in at the vets for second vaccinations next week as this week are self isolating.
Just found they have fleas. What should I do? Thanks

What age are the kittens?
Maybe phone the vets for advice
Depending on age you could buy Advantage flea treatment online as its not prescription only

Twokitstwokats · 03/07/2021 17:47

Thanks. They are 13 weeks. The vets are all shut except for emergencies which I don't think this is!

Think Advantage is ok from 8 weeks. Could someone buy it from pets at home for you and stuck it through your door? Or order online

Twokitstwokats · 03/07/2021 17:50

Thanks. I will have a look.

Do you have any insurance? Mine offer free video advice through first vet app. Yours might have something similar.

Twokitstwokats · 03/07/2021 17:54

They came with a month petplan, thanks

Hello, you need a prescription strength product to kill the life cycle of the flea. No point wasting your money on shop bought products, they just aren't effective enough and some of them are dangerous.

Ring the vet that provided the kittens first vaccines and they can either remotely prescribe so you can order online from a pharmacist or alternatively they can pop a treatment aside for a friend to collect for you. (Probably the quickest option)

You will also need a treatment for your house. The vet can also provide this.

It would be a good idea to weigh the kittens on kitchen scales to enable the vet to correctly dose the treatment.

Good luck!

If they have fleas you need to treat your full house. Fleas don't live on animals but can lie dormant in carpets, sofas for anything up to 3 years. Get advice regarding flea treatments from your vet. In my area all vets are open, I'm sure they'll give you proper advice. Flea treatments are weight specific. Never ever use Bob Martin.....I'm a vet nurse

dementedpixie · 03/07/2021 17:58

Advantage had the same flea killing ingredient as advocate which is a prescription only product (it has added wormer ingredients). It is an effective treatment for fleas and the only one I'd recommend to buy OTC.

Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 17:58

Also fleas on kittens can cause anaemia if it's a severe case and can make a kitten extremely poorly

dementedpixie · 03/07/2021 17:59

Indorex is supposed to be good for treating the house and can also be bought online (probably cheaper than getting it from the vet too)

Are they open at the weekend though for non emergencies?
Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 18:07

@dementedpixie I'm sure any vet practice worth their salt would be able to give some advice over the phone

Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 18:08

@dementedpixie, I agree with indore and it would be cheaper online but OP would need to wait on it being delivered that's the only snag I suppose.

Twokitstwokats · 03/07/2021 18:08

The two I rang were shut and said to call another number for emergencies. They had their vaccinations a long way from here.

We have tropical fish and the kittens aren't allowed out yet, is it safe to use house flea treatment? Thanks

OP posts:
Sausagis · 03/07/2021 18:20

@Ludo19 why not Bob Martin? I'm fighting an ongoing flea battle since my cat changed where she hangs out and currently have Bob Martin (not that it seems any better than the last one I had)

dementedpixie · 03/07/2021 18:29

Fipronil is ineffective in many areas as fleas are resistant to it. Some Bob Martin products have caused injury to animals too

Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 18:54

I can't go into details regarding Bob Martin

Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 18:55

@Twokitstwokats that you'd need to check regarding aquatics. Look up indorex on the Internet regarding safe to use and ingredients

Ludo19 · 03/07/2021 18:58

@Sausagis, go to the vet and get a proper prescription flea treatment please I'm meaning that kindly x

Twokitstwokats · 03/07/2021 19:00

Thanks all

Advantage is the only non-prescription flea product that works, you can order online and pay express delivery or perhaps ask someone to pop to Pets at Home for you.
