They are trying to taking the cat from me?!

So this is a part two of my stray cat encounter. I was finally able to trap the boy and take him to the vets to be scanned for a microchip and have him checked over. I've taken him through cats protection. This is the thing. The lady I've been organising this with and acting as my middle man was fully aware of what I wanted. I already made it clear I wanted to bring him back as the cat is familiar and attached to the area. I've already homed a stray before and I know if they have spent most of their lives outdoors that's usually how they want to stay. So I said as I had another cat that the stray was fighting with that I would happily home this cat as an outdoor cat, whilst feeding and caring for him. I'm hoping if he was nutured and introduced to people in the right way he wouldnt be so feisty with my other cat. Right now he is skittish and scared but the vets said he was lovely and friendly so that gave me hope!

However, the lady from cats protection failed to mention that "legally" they have to hold the cat for two weeks and as he is now technically theirs she has reported back that they cant allow me to rehome him as an outdoor cat as he is too friendly. Surely this is up to a cat to decide? As I said I've taken a stray in before who would go crazy if was not allowed to go back out. I feel deceived and helpless and now the cat is technically theirs I cant do anything about it. She knew I wanted to keep him if possible. We have formed quite a good bond already. If anything i also said if i brought him back and he didnt get on with my cat at home that i would personally look to rehome the stray myself without him having to risk staying in a cage for ages or being euthanized. I'm really down about it and now feel like I regret doing it this way and just wish I took him down to the vets and paid the bill myself....

You shouldn't have given him to CP

Great advice. Now OP can hop in her time machine and do just that.
UhtredRagnarson · 04/06/2021 15:56

Who has him now? If you have him just keep him. They’d have to get a court order to have the police escort them to enter your property and have him removed from you. They won’t do that.

SkodaKodiaq · 04/06/2021 15:57

@Biancadelrioisback It's great advice for anyone else in a similar position who reads this or May end up in a similar position in the future 👍🏻

Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 15:58

@UhtredRagnarson the vets do. But technically he is there under cats protection

OP posts:
UhtredRagnarson · 04/06/2021 15:59

Ahh shit. Could you just go and collect him and don’t let on there is any issue about who should have him? Or are the vets savvy to that?

Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:02

The vets havent updated me as he is "under the cats protection" so I dont even know if he has a chip or not. Would it be too late to call the vets and say I want to withdraw the form for cats protection and pay for the cats vet check?

OP posts:
Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:04

@SkodaKodiaq no one informed me of this! I thought it was the right thing to do

OP posts:
Killahangilion · 04/06/2021 16:11

Are you expecting CP to pay the vet bill? Was it for neutering?

Ring the vets and arrange to collect him and pay the bill. Assuming he’s not chipped then I don’t see why you can’t take him home.

WeAreTheHeroes · 04/06/2021 16:14

That was going to be my suggestion and you can explain why.
Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:17

@Killahangilion apparently because he has a "friendly" temperament they have determined he must of had an owner so now they must wait two weeks to see if anyone comes forward.

@WeAreTheHeroes I'm too late he is at the cattery now.

Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:18

I did think if the cat was a complete stray and needed nurturing then CP would be best but I dont mind paying for his vet bill. I feel like I've lost this one. I dont understand why they wouldnt want him to come back to a willing home that is already set up for him.

OP posts:
Stickytreacle · 04/06/2021 16:18

I think he deserves the opportunity of a good home rather than living outside all the time. Cats do not always want to be out, if they are stray they have no choice but to be.
If the form is signed and you aren't the legal owner anyway then the charity will have precedence.

Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:20

@Stickytreacle he would only be an outdoor cat if he chose to be and if he didnt get on with my cat after being nutured. Worst case I already know somewhere he can go that would avoid him having to wait to be adopted in the cattery

OP posts:
Nightbear · 04/06/2021 16:22

The home you’re offering doesn’t sound like a good fit for him.

Whereswally2 · 04/06/2021 16:30

@Nightbear the only reason it wouldnt be a good fit is if my cat doesnt get along with him. They have currently had stand offs in the garden because obviously a random stray cat tried to claim it and he was quite defensive by nature. But I'm hoping if he is abit more domesticated and introduced to my cat gradually the right way that could be different. If not I would not subject him to a wrong choice of home and have two other people that would gladly take him in

OP posts:
ViperAtTheGatesOfDawn · 04/06/2021 16:33

I would trust them to assess him and make the best decision for him. You can't offer what he needs right now.

If he can be rehomed to a home that will surely be in his best interests. It is highly unlikely that he would languish in a cage and be PTS. Even the trickiest cats get adopted.

Nightbear · 04/06/2021 16:35

Once you involve professionals they’re going to look for the best home for the cat.

thecatneuterer · 06/06/2021 17:57

Have you signed any official paperwork relinquishing ownership. If you haven't then you can have him back. Even if CP are paying the bill - if you haven't signed him over then they have to give him back if you insist.

OriginalTaste · 07/06/2021 10:15

That's not true at all - I volunteer for CP and have assisted trapping a few cats.

If they are stray, we can get them neutered, then chipped as 'garden cats' if the finder doesn't want their name to them, they are then released back where they are found if the finder is in agreement.

CP do NOT own the cat at all. They provide a service to TNR (Trap, Neuter, Release). We had a stray chipped as a garden cat last week. He stayed 48 hours at the vets after his neuter and then we took him back to the garden he's been living in for four years..

This cat has presumably been lucky enough to get a place in rescue to be rehomed though, which is definitely better than just being returned to the site.
Whereswally2 · 07/06/2021 10:21

@OriginalTaste that is interesting because I've been offered no involvement. Since they have taken the cat I have had no updates, all I know is that they netured him there and then on the day. When I passed him along to the vets the lady took down my number but then the cp volunteer told me legally they shouldnt contact me and everything must be done by cp. I think I'm going to put this mystery to the rest and call them myself to find out the true story

OP posts:
Whereswally2 · 07/06/2021 10:24

@Stickytreacle no this is not the case. I've been told that cp just legally "have to hold onto him" for two weeks incase an owner comes forward. He hasnt got a permnant place in a shelter and I dont know what the next step will be for him once those two weeks are up

OP posts:
Mydarlingmyhamburger · 07/06/2021 10:24

They do have their own rules when it comes to strays and they do have to follow the laws. All stray animals must be held for two weeks incase an owner comes forward. And you can’t take a stray to a vet, get a rescue to pay for the treatment and then ask for it back, otherwise everyone would be pretending they’d found a stray every time one of their pets got sick. The cp are going to need the adoption fee to help pay tot the cats treatments.

If no owner comes forward then he’ll be assessed and placed for adoption. You could apply for him but it already sounds like they’ve found you unsuitable.
