They are trying to taking the cat from me?!

So this is a part two of my stray cat encounter. I was finally able to trap the boy and take him to the vets to be scanned for a microchip and have him checked over. I've taken him through cats protection. This is the thing. The lady I've been organising this with and acting as my middle man was fully aware of what I wanted. I already made it clear I wanted to bring him back as the cat is familiar and attached to the area. I've already homed a stray before and I know if they have spent most of their lives outdoors that's usually how they want to stay. So I said as I had another cat that the stray was fighting with that I would happily home this cat as an outdoor cat, whilst feeding and caring for him. I'm hoping if he was nutured and introduced to people in the right way he wouldnt be so feisty with my other cat. Right now he is skittish and scared but the vets said he was lovely and friendly so that gave me hope!

However, the lady from cats protection failed to mention that "legally" they have to hold the cat for two weeks and as he is now technically theirs she has reported back that they cant allow me to rehome him as an outdoor cat as he is too friendly. Surely this is up to a cat to decide? As I said I've taken a stray in before who would go crazy if was not allowed to go back out. I feel deceived and helpless and now the cat is technically theirs I cant do anything about it. She knew I wanted to keep him if possible. We have formed quite a good bond already. If anything i also said if i brought him back and he didnt get on with my cat at home that i would personally look to rehome the stray myself without him having to risk staying in a cage for ages or being euthanized. I'm really down about it and now feel like I regret doing it this way and just wish I took him down to the vets and paid the bill myself....

@Stickytreacle yes absolutley, but if there is an offer of a home on a site the cat is already familiar with, that would be the preference..

CP may have already had a home in mind, or want to keep him (I've known this to happen)..

I would give the vet and/or CP a call. There is no legal requirement for CP not to be in touch with you, and if you have not surrendered the cat they should not really be assuming ownership.

Sorry you're going through this OP!

@Mydarlingmyhamburger I'm assuming they will find me unsuitable if they decide the stray cant live with other animaks which will be concluded in an assessment?

I think one thing that has made upset is that I've been shut off from everything since I handed him over after being told I could have him back. Even if I'm not deemed suitable to rehome him I would of still liked to be in contact about the welfare of the cat during this process since I have bonded with him but to be told it's a legal policy that they contact the finder outstands me.

Whereswally2 I think you’ve done a great thing helping the cat to get the help it needs

CP really can’t give the cat back to you for you and your cat to decide whether it can live in the house or the garden though it’s not fair on the cat

It's bad they haven’t let you know what’s happening with the cat, that’s not on

Can you start the CP process to adopt a cat formally, assume they do home visit etc, so you are at least in with a chance?
